Tips For Creating a Gender-Neutral Dining Space Without Sacrificing Style

Challenged with the task of designing a gender-neutral dining space that reflected two very different styles, Nik's Naks founder, Nicole Ben-Dor, started with a table.

Challenged with the task of designing a gender-neutral dining space that reflected two very different styles, Nik's Naks founder, Nicole Ben-Dor, started with a table.

The wood and iron Horchow dining table successfully merged Nicole's husband's modern industrial taste with her adoration for feminine French country, which sparked the inspiration for the rest of the room's design. Aside from blending their styles perfectly, the sizable table also accommodates frequent dinners with extended family and friends. Upholstered chairs provide a polished look, but are cozy enough to linger in far after the meal is over. Mason jar inspired pendant lighting has a playful country reference but still has enough modern edge for Nicole's husband. Classic white dishware feels clean against the rustic wooden table, while a large black and white safari-inspired photo adds dimension, visual interest, and luck, as Nicole says.

Dressing Up Dining Room Chairs

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member theroomstylist from the Su Casa group: I felt like a change with two of my dining room chairs.

I felt like a change with two of my dining room chairs. I couldn't part with the chairs so I decided to figure out how to sew custom slipcovers for them using Windsor Smith's Pelagos patterned fabric in Mist. For step by step details on the custom slipcover pattern, check out my blog: The Room Stylist

Before and After: A Dining Room Makeover

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member Funkytime from the Su Casa group:

Since we moved to our new place a month ago, I've been pretty overwhelmed with the amount of work that the place needed! We had so much stuff that I couldn't find a place for. We downsized quite a bit to be able to live in the city again, but it was well worth it. I am just not a country girl at all! Lucky me, I had some good friends and great helpers to get me through the chaos. After moving boxes and furniture from one room to the other, back and forth for days, we finally started to tackle the dining room. Angela, my awesome friend and paintress stood by my side, and we did our down-and-dirty best to make this room livable again. Are you ready?! It's not pretty!

This room was used as a bedroom before. It actually doesn't even have a door. It also looks more like a sunroom or a closed balcony and is pretty narrow. It has a window on the left side that leads to the living room and two different sized windows on the right side. The pictures were taken when the old tenants still lived there.

A Budget-Friendly Dining Room Renovation

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member Involving Color from the Su Casa group: Our dining room started as a blank slate with cream colored walls and a basic chair rail.

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member Involving Color from the Su Casa group:

Our dining room started as a blank slate with cream colored walls and a basic chair rail. We painted it a blue-gray, added crown molding, faux wainscoting, a new light fixture, plantation shutters, wall art, accessories, and my favorite part — a couple of awesome Craigslist finds for our table and chairs.

The sideboard was purchased from Ballard Designs, and the accessories are from Homegoods and Pottery Barn Outlet. The wall art frames are from Ikea (love that place!) and the prints are from the NY Public Library Digital Gallery and were downloaded for free!

Check out Involving Color for all of the details including paint colors and tutorials on the crown molding and wainscoting.

Su Casa: Ourfifthhouse's Dining Room Update

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member ourfifthhouse from the Su Casa group:

I recently stenciled one wall in our dining room with an ikat pattern stencil I found on Etsy.  I made a few other changes to the room like painting the ceiling, adding trim to the drapes, and creating a new vignette over the buffet. The stencil wall made the biggest impact, though. It's amazing how one stenciled wall changed the entire look of the room!

Check out Our Fifth House for more details including a stencil tutorial and the before pics!

Roundup: Sunny, Striped Table Linens

There's no doubt that Little Fockers is bringing cheer to theaters around the country, but what's brightening my day in the film is the vibrantly striped tablecloth at the Focker dinner party!

There's no doubt that Little Fockers is bringing cheer to theaters around the country, but what's brightening my day in the film is the vibrantly striped tablecloth at the Focker dinner party! Many families tend to use deep hues in the Winter, but I'm all for introducing sunny colors to warm up a cold room. If something seasonal is what you're after, a big holiday turkey or honey-baked ham will certainly do the trick! The Missoni Home Karl Tabletop Collection ($41-$225) is my favorite; you can make it more wintry or summery depending on what colored accents you use elsewhere on the table. Here are a few more picks for you:
