Do You Know Calligraphy?

I just came across these exquisite Lace and Foxes Valentines ($10) by Hello Handmade Paperie, who will inscribe your love note in calligraphy and mail off your card for you. Although I think my chicken scratch does have a certain je ne sais quoi - what's not to love? - the card got me to thinking that calligraphy is a lost art these days. It's sad to see the stunning script fall by the wayside.

Je t'aime paper dolls. I always have and always will. So, ahem, this Wool and Water Paper Doll Valentine ($12) is pour moi. It comes as a print that you cut and assemble yourself along with six silver brads to keep it all together (and instructions, of course). Although it would be quite cute if my man put this paper doll together, I'd simply have too much fun doing it myself. Once it's made, it's a good idle desk toy for, you know, when my boss isn't looking. Although, there's no matching "Ken" paper doll, so what's the fun in that?

"Couples who ski together stay together." This Ski Love Card ($3.50) is woefully cute and full of good intentions and seasonal enthusiasm: it's a must have for any ski bunny couple. Its retro pink and brown diagonal stripes remind me of the ski suits my parents wore in the '70s - good thing? - and the genuine wood ski cutouts also add a charming touch of authenticity. Hoping to make a trip to the slopes this Winter? Maybe this card is just the thing to push your honey over the edge.

First Look: Valentine

The CW's new Sunday night programming block starts in early October, and of the four new shows, I'm most curious to check out Valentine, which is about a family of Greek gods who now live among us in a world where Mount Olympus is just off the freeway from LA's Laurel Canyon.

My reasons for being excited for the show are twofold: I've seen the whole "historical figures from such-and-such a time try to navigate modern society" concept work before (anyone else ever watch Clone High?), and I'm glad to see another alum of The OC - Autumn Reeser, in this case - get a job. There's also the whole thing of having Aphrodite, Eros, and Hercules shacking up together, which has the potential to be amusing, especially while they're living out their mission of helping everyday folks find love.

Of course, it also has the potential to be quite cheesy, and from the first promo, I can't tell for sure which way the show is leaning. There are some funny bits (Eros has foregone arrows in favor of a love gun), but there's also an over-the-top feeling about it all. It's enough to make me want to check out an episode, though. Valentine's Day is long gone, I know, but this is too unworldly to keep to myself. What lunatic actually thinks that an alien pointing a gun at his love, while robotically chanting "you must be mine" and "obey me," would make any gal swoon? He's gotta be joking, but even so, this is more nightmarish than funny. Run, Lisa Peters of Dublin, run! No, don't booty dance- run!

First there was Heart-kun, a Chihuahua puppy born with a heart shaped marker on his coat and then there was Valentine, a piglet with unique heart markings that was born in the UK. Which one is cuter? You decide?

It looks like the adorable Chihuahua puppy born with a heart shaped marker on his coat has some new competition. Less than two weeks ago a Gloucester Old Spot piglet with unique heart markings was born on a farm in the UK. What's his name? Why, Valentine of course! How can you not fall in love with that?
