Casa Interview: The Good Wife's Stephen Hendrickson and Beth Kushnick

As I've mentioned in the past, I'm a huge fan of the new CBS series The Good Wife. In particular, I adore Alicia Florrick's (Julianna Margulies) apartment. With classic styling and great use of color, it's definitely a look I'm currently coveting. Luckily, I recently had the opportunity to chat with the two people responsible for the look of that very apartment. The Good Wife's production designer, Stephen Hendrickson, and set decorator, Beth Kushnick, answered my questions about the look of Alicia's home.

CasaSugar: How did the production designer and set decorator define Alicia (as a starting-over mom, lawyer, etc.), and how did this play into their concept of her new apartment?

Hendrickson and Kushnick: We defined Alicia as a working mom who wanted to make a comforting life for her kids as they had to downsize from a large house in the suburbs to a much smaller apartment which she purchased and had renovated. We kept some furniture from the old house like the kids' beds and the dining room furniture. In addition the show creators wanted to keep Alicia's king size bed as a visual - that it was too big for her new bedroom and show that one side of it was now empty. We also created a maid's room in the back of the apartment for all of her husband's belongings.

CasaSugar: How did Alicia’s style as a North Shore mom change when she moved into Chicago proper?

Hendrickson and Kushnick: Her new apartment had a sophisticated color palette . . . Alicia's apartment also has more contemporary living room furnishings and an upgraded kitchen.

Get the Look: Cameron and Mitchell's House on Modern Family

Tonight's the second episode of ABC's new winning comedy Modern Family, and I have to say I'm hooked. I love all of the family dynamics in this extended family, and I also have to say that I absolutely adore Cameron and Mitchell's home. The couple, who've been together for five years and have just adopted a baby, have a great style to their home. While I'm not a fan of the nursery, the rest of the house displays a pleasing mix of modern and cozy elements, with a great use of color and art. Take the tour with me!

Great Set Design From 2009's Emmy Nominees: Big Love

While Big Love is nowhere near as hip as Mad Men when it comes to its sets, there's no denying that the careful crafting of the show's look adds depth to the series. Since the show's central thesis is the importance of family (even if it is a rather unusual family), the set design reflects that idea, as well as the personalities of those family members. The Authentic Look of HBO's True Blood

Although True Blood has had an uneven first season (the finale was last night), I'll still be tuning in next year. I have to find out what happens with my favorite characters, and I can't wait to see how the plot develops. One element of the show that I really enjoy is its authentic look, which is crafted by the nimble art and set direction of Bill Law and Catherine Smith. Filmed in Los Angeles and Shreveport, LA, the show's set design embraces small-town Southern style that is imbued with a creepy dread. Source

Bryan Greenberg Talks About How to Make It in America

HBO premieres new series How to Make It in America tonight, the latest venture from producer Mark Wahlberg. Like Entourage, we're following a group of guy friends - but this time we're on the isle of Manhattan. At the center of the story is Ben, an aspiring designer hustling his way to the top of one of the biggest fashion scenes - alongside his business partner and BFF Cam.

I've already shared some first photos of the series, but I recently chatted with star Bryan Greenberg who plays Ben to get his take. Greenberg is no stranger to TV, given his turns on shows like October Road. Still, he'll be the first to admit that he's not usually known for stuff this edgy (remember when he crooned on his guitar on One Tree Hill?). Listen in:

On why he loves his new gig: "It’s an amazing project, a really intelligent series. It's fun! We shot it in all the cool locations in New York. I'm working with really talented directors like Julian Farino and other guys like Joshua Marston who did Maria Full of Grace and Jonathan Levine of The Wackness. Working at HBO, everything's quality over there. They take risks, and this show has an edge to it. It's different for me, because it's a little edgier. I loved it - I hope I can come back for a second season."

On shooting in New York: "It’s awesome, 'cause I'm from the Midwest and I live in L.A., but I consider myself a New Yorker from the time I spent here [as a student at NYU], and I'm just in love with the city. I've been all over the world, and this is my favorite place to be. I constantly work in New York; people think I'm a New Yorker for some reason, but I'll take it because it's the best city in the world. For How to Make It, I'm hanging out with downtown artists, skateboarders, DJs, a fast-paced nightlife crowd - a whole street culture vibe that I was aware of just peripherally, but I've never been immersed into like I was."

On what he's doing with his own group of friends to celebrate the premiere: "We just had the premiere Tuesday night, and it was unbelievable. It was great turnout, and the reception so far has been over the moon, and I'm really excited about it. So I'm enjoying the ride. I'll be back in L.A. Sunday night, probably hanging out with friends, and get a drink. I don't know."

On his own hustling, how-he-made-it story: "As soon as I finished at NYU, I was living in New York in a small East Village apartment with my roommate and my girlfriend at the time. I was working as a mortgage broker assistant, a caterer, bartender, waiter - it was definitely hustling to get auditions and try to make it to Hollywood. But you have to."

Sneak Peek: HBO's Funny or Die Presents

Chances are you've stumbled across Will Ferrell, Chris Henchy, and Adam McKay's viral video mecca Funny or Die while bumbling around on the Internet at work (it's okay, I won't tell). Now, they're invading your TV too, as they bring a slew of comedic sketches to HBO. Apparently, they just give their many celeb friends a camera and let them run wild. The result: totally random, raucous silliness.

The show is appropriately titled Funny or Die Presents, and it's premiering at midnight this Friday. To celebrate, the website just released a series of clips filled with a ton of recognizable faces. You have Don Cheadle and Ferrell reenacting a "Drunk History" bit as Douglass and Lincoln, David Spade in a wig alongside SNL alum Tim Meadows, and Malin Akerman and a wounded Ed Helms in the middle of a bank robbery.

While not uproariously funny from these quick snippets alone, it does have me curious to see each skit in full - and to watch for who else might pop up in the series (Zooey Deschanel and John C. Reilly are also among the attached names). Plus, I'm sold just from the fact that Zach Galifianakis is wearing pigtails and a velour sweatsuit.

Bobby Flay Signs On to NBC Restaurateur Show

Today there's more intel on NBC's restaurateur reality TV show, formerly titled United Plates of America. Variety reports that the competition, which will air next season, has a new name, America's Next Great Restaurant, that's perhaps more fitting of the show's premise than its old title.

In addition, Bobby Flay has signed on to be one of the five restaurant and business leaders who will be a judge, mentor, and investor to the contestants. On the new program, which is casting right this moment, industry insiders like Mesa Grill owner and Iron Chef Flay will help a winning chef or aspiring restaurateur open a new eatery.

NBC hasn't had too much success in the food reality series department: 2003's The Restaurant, starring Rocco Dispirito, was a flop; last year's The Chopping Block with Marco Pierre White was canceled after just three episodes. Still, this is a completely new premise, and having Bobby Flay star certainly can't hurt. What do you think? Does the show sound like it has the ingredients for success?

The Modern Family Gang Keeps the Hard Work Coming in Hawaii

It's been a long, hard, sunny week for the cast of Modern Family as they took production of their series on vacation to Hawaii. The whole gang had downtime to hit the beach last weekend, though yesterday two of the couples stepped in front of the camera in their swimsuits. Julie Bowen went with a low-cut black one-piece while filming in a hot tub alongside her TV husband Ty Burrell, while Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet floated nearby. Sarah Hyland, who plays Julie and Ty's daughter, wasn't needed for those particular scenes. It worked out well, though, since she was able to enjoy another romantic afternoon with her boyfriend Matt Prokop.
