I love the look of the Sundance Catalog's Midcentury Studio Stool ($245). The varnished raw steel has an understated, industrial look that seems as fitting for a bistro or bar counter as a kitchen or home office. At 27 inches tall and 17 inches wide, they're also a great size - big enough but not too hefty. Garden stools have gotten pretty popular over the last few years, and they don't seem to be losing their cool. Many, though, are absurdly overpriced. I don't want you to fall into that trap because I have also seen plenty of affordable ones. Take for instance this Round Open Work Garden Stool ($375) from Gump's. Yes, it may have an unusual mottled green glaze, but it's not any more stylish than one with a solid glaze - and its design is quite standard. You shouldn't spend any more than $100 on a garden stool, and I have even seen some for $50. I'll help you get started on your hunt.

Nice and New: Seating For Eating by StudioIlse

Interior designer Ilse Crawford has done it again, this time making her exquisite design skills available to the hungry public. Her design group Studio Ilse will launch this elegant new range of wooden seating, benches, and stools, called Seating for Eating, at next month's London Design Festival (Sept. 19-27).

The designs have a familiar, Shaker-style look, and are not a far departure from some of Studio Ilse's other pieces like these high-back chairs. Each piece is handcrafted by De La Espada from solid chesnut with specially chosen knots, and has copper feet. They're also available in this natural oiled and sustainable wood, or painted eggshell white. I love how the high-back benches are both open and intimate; they offer privacy (great for open plan rooms) but are also not totally closed off from the room. The range is also great because it allows for group seating, but also individual seating. I am disappointed to see a single high-back dining chair missing from the collection, as well as the dining table itself. Cool Idea: A Paint Can Stool

I just noticed this paint can stool in a home on Light Locations, and am completely smitten. Not only is this DIY furniture a great way to repurpose an old paint can (although you know you can recycle them), but it's also just downright cute. I love how this one was upholstered with vintage-looking fabric; it's like a really artsy mushroom. It's a great way to stock up on spare seating or side tables without spending much (or any) money. The top could even be upholstered with the fabric from an old t-shirt or sweater. You definitely need a gallon can to make a substantial seat. If you don't have one, ask your local paint shop or hardware store if they have any leftovers.

Dutch designer Erwin Zwiers's To Become One Table and Seats (inquire for price) each have two parts: a soft, formless sack and a frame made of various pegs. Each part reinforces each other, and it's meant to be played with like sand on a beach, offering a relaxing effect. What do you think: yea or nay?

Roundup: Rattan Dining Chairs

Heidi and Spencer never were my favorite characters on The Hills, but I did always have an eye for the rattan bar stools in their kitchen. Rattan, as you may know, is essentially thin, pliable stems of palm, making these chairs perfectly appropriate for a California crib. There is a beachy vibe to them, but I think they work well in any atmosphere. I especially like the trapezoid-shaped back of these and the cushioned seat.

If you're a fan, you'll be happy to know you can purchase similar seats for under $100 to around $300. In other words, you don't have to earn a paycheck from MTV to call them your own. See a few similar rattan stools and dining chairs when you read more.

Found It! Samantha Jones's Stool Lamp

For obvious reason, I return again and again to the interiors from Sex and the City. Each SATC lady had her own flair and personal style, and each woman's apartment illustrated this. Right now, I'm loving confident, modern interiors, so I took a look back at Samantha Jones's digs. A lamp that doubles as stool or small side table stood out to me.
