Today's Su Casa comes from a gallery that Arielrb38 posted showing off her fourth-floor walk-up in Washington, DC. (Want to share your photos? Here's how to post in the Su Casa group.) She makes great use of a small space with the spice rack and hanging fruit baskets, and the plants and the colorful poster really add life to the nook.

In case you were wondering, that's the sound of a spring. Today, March 21, is the first day of spring and although I love spring, one of the things I don't enjoy 100% is spring cleaning.

The other day reader Marni dropped a line asking whether or not her mostly unopened spice rack she received four years ago was still good. I started to respond to her, when I realized that she's probably not the only one wondering how long spices last.
First of all, spices don't necessarily "go bad."

From allspice to cayenne pepper, spices are essential to even the most basic kitchen. While I've accrued more and more spices over the years, I certainly haven't amassed more kitchen storage space. I've decided that I need a set of spice jars, or a spice rack, to organize everything methodically and efficiently.

Victoria Beckham has come along way since her WAG days of 2006. She moved to LA in 2007 and has since worked hard to build a name for herself in the fashion world developing her own label with a little help from Simon Fuller and Roland Mouret. Victoria's current personal style is much more elegant than in previous years and her designs have won a lot of praise.

Although I have a large spice rack, I have a designated mise en place area for ingredients I use all the time. This includes seasonings like salt and pepper as well as my favorite spice, cumin. While we never cooked with it growing up — my mother hates the smell of it — I have grown to love it, and now I don't think I could live without it.
