Oh Snap! Punk Love Lives On

(Punk) rock on! At the annual Rebellion Festival held in the seaside resort of Blackpool, England, punk rockers keep the '80s rebel fashion dream alive. Crowds sporting magenta mohawks and Doc Martens flooded to the shore to see classic punk bands like Flogging Molly and Agnostic Front. I love that this subculture is still common enough in England to foster an entire festival; you just don't see many punk rockers walking around in the States nowadays.

Inspired: Cassie's Edgy Take on Crochet

Singer Cassie rocked an edgy, punk crochet look at the BET Awards last night. I love how glam the lacy pattern looks in black, and Cassie's punk-inspired half-shaved head accentuates the singer's beauty while letting fans know that she's not to be trifled with. Inspired, I set out to find some similar looks.

Of course, my hero Tord Boontje would have a lamp that would fit Cassie to a T. His Artecnica Come Rain Come Shine Light ($4,950) has the same lacy, edgy glamour as Cassie's BET Awards ensemble.

Before and After: From Dull to Punk

For some home decorators, music is a way of life, and that means that music must become a part of their home decorating scheme. Take Craftster member Anarchy_Onions for example. As you'll see, she isn't shy about incorporating her musical tastes into her home. I love it when people have a definite idea about what they like and dislike, so I admire Anarchy_Onions's moxie!

She explains, "I saw something like this a long time ago that someone was selling and I always wanted to make one. When I redecorated my room, I got the chance. The third panel is a bit crooked, but overall I dig it."

For all of you who might not know who these characters are, the man is Sid Vicious, the bass player for seminal British punk rock band The Sex Pistols, and the woman is Nancy Spungen, his girlfriend. While this dresser may be way too punk rock for your taste, you've got to give Anarchic_Onions credit for a job well done!

Flashback: The Infamous Quincy Punk Episode

I love these old television shows. They always had at least one PSA-style cautionary tale episode about the evils of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. Take Quincy (1976 - 1983) starring Jack Klugman - the medical examiner who cared. In this episode, a girl gets messed up through her association with "violence-oriented punk rock music." So of course ol' Quincy has to investigate. Let's see what we find out about those ~~evil punk rockers~~ zombie killers . . .

Trend Alert: Livin' La Vida London

As our sisters at FabSugar UK know quite well, London is worlds apart from America. And I'm not just talking about distance. There are some crossovers in fashion, but the main difference in dressing between the UK and US is that the Brits favor a more disheveled, punky look. Vivienne Westwood, of course, spearheaded the entire punk fashion movement back in the day. Those who wish to be livin' la vida London should consider playing with leather, studs, and neon, even if Piccadilly Circus and Kensington High Street don't ring a bell.

Dame Vivienne Westwood has spoken out to the Daily Telegraph about her family, politics, art and fashion. She is typically outspoken but one of my favourite quotes comes when she is discussing the early punk days.

"I was always thinking, Why don't people tear their own clothes if that's what they want? Why buy a torn T-shirt from me?"

It's a typically quirky comment from Westwood who recently released her cultural manifesto and produced shows in both London and Paris.

Punk Rock Pre-School

Who better to school a bunch of toddlers on the principles of going punk than Deborah Harry, the legendary lead singer of Blondie? Given the generation gap, these kids have no appreciation for the greatness sitting before them, but that's what makes this group discussion (or peanut butter belly fest) all the more amusing. From "pooping on stage" to the meaning of love and life, Deb breaks it down for us all... (Thanks, Nancita!)

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Anna Sui

The girls at Anna Sui reminded me of anime characters: they came down the runway with big toothy grins, crazy technicolor cropped 'dos, and eye makeup so heavy it was hard to recognize them.

But we're here to talk about the clothes, I think it can best be described as punk-meets-primp! Sequin spangled tulle flapper dresses, dizzying striped miniskirt suits, leopard print tops and see-through sweater vests were all paired with wedge sandals over colorful sheer socks.

This is definitely a polarizing collection, either you'll love it or you'll hate it, but if you like Manic Panic streaks, shiny ruffled ice skater skirts, and punk rock, I have a feeling you'll like it a lot!
