Found It! Preston Lee's Bedroom Wallpaper

If you follow Top Design, I'm sure you have lots to say about the contestants' designs . . . and you might have even been inspired every now and then. In the finale, the "House Challenge," each room had its own appeal, but I couldn't help but love the wallpaper in Preston's polished, though slightly impersonal, bedroom. Personally, I love it!

You've seen it . . . in my foyer! It's the Graham & Brown Paste the Wall wallpaper in Tempting Turquoise, which I reviewed for Casa Beta. It can be peeled off in full sheets when it's time to decorate, so it's quite the innovative product. Desperate Housewives Rundown Episode 11, "Home Is the Place"

It was nice to have some new TV to welcome in the new year so soon after the holidays, don't you think? I really enjoyed settling in for a night of new ABC shows and I definitely got a kick out of this week's episode of Desperate Housewives. While I like the storyline with the newfound friendship between Lee and Susan, I think my favorite part of the episode is seeing Bree get meet her control-freaky match in Alex's also redheaded mother Melina!

Susan - With Jackson out of town, Susan's bored and asks to go to a dance club with Lee after he's just had a spat with Bob. He agrees (and I definitely howled with laughter at Lee's advice to Susan to pile on the makeup because "drag queens get their first drink free") and they get totally drunk over the course of the night, ending with the two of them sharing a bed. Susan wakes up thinking she might have slept with Lee (especially after she sees the "smooth jazz" CD? What year is this?!) and when Bob comes by, worried that Lee slept with someone else, he sighs that Lee will "bang anything with a pulse and facial hair." Ha! Gaby's cackle at that line pretty much mimicked my own. In the end, Lee assures Susan that they did not sleep together and he advises her not to move away to be with Jackson. If Jackson leaves her, he promises to dance with Susan "until someone better comes along." I did not see that sweet moment coming! Aww. . .

Bree - Meeting the in-laws is so often a hilariously stressful situation and of course we knew it would be multiplied by a million with the Martha Stewart-y Bree. What's more, Alex's mother Melina is a blunt, demanding, manipulative woman who pushes Bree's politeness to the very edge. After fighting for holidays with the sons (Melina "calls Christmas" and then Thanksgiving, forcing Bree into bidding for Easter) and competitively trying to get the sons to live near them, Bree triumphs by buying Andrew and Alex a house right there in Fairview. Surely this isn't the last we'll see of Melina and I can't wait to find out if she gets some revenge for the house thing. Also, yet again, my favorite line goes to Orson when Bree says that his mother "had the good taste to have a paralyzing stroke." Orson responds fondly, "True. That was a merry Christmas."

Gaby - This new and improved Carlos is so inspiring! Ladybugs, spiders, all of nature is this re-discovered bounty of beauty. . . but Gaby wants Carlos to stop admiring and start bringing in the big bucks. On the street Gaby runs into an old colleague of Carlos's who offers Carlos a high-paying job. But rather than being miserable in a hectic, cutthroat job, Carlos wants to work with the blind. I can't say I agree with the way Gaby needles Carlos into accepting the position he knows will make him unhappy and cause him to spend less time with his family. It makes me sad for Carlos. I know Gaby had a rough five years, but with regaining his sight it's like Carlos has gotten a new outlook on things and Gaby just wants him to go back to his old outlook.

Lynette - The Scavos' lawyer finds out that they've been pretending that Preston is actually Porter and he gives them two days to find the real Porter so they can go to court. Neither of the twins wants Porter to return home because Mr. Schilling has threatened to kill him. Thus, Lynette decides that she'll do what she has to do to protect her children, even if that means running over Mr. Schilling with her car. Lynette scares me a little when she gets all serious and determined. Preston ultimately relents and gets Porter on the phone with Lynette, but before she can convince him to come home, her mother Stella snaps Porter's phone shut and tells him not to trust Lynette. I wonder if she then whipped up some of her special "brownies" for her grandson. . .

Dave/Edie - Dave's losing it. Without the proper meds, he's starting to lose control on the charade of a life he's built up with Edie, and Edie's catching on. She sees him talking to nobody at the kitchen table and when he finally admits to her that he was married before, Edie throws him out of the house. Mrs. McCluskey, returning from her investigative trip with her sister Roberta (Lily Tomlin again!), spots Dave leaving the house with his luggage.

Is Your Local Starbucks Closing?

By now you must have heard that Starbucks is closing 600 of its stateside coffee shops. Last week Starbucks released the official list of the closing stores with a grand total of 616 closures. The closing stores are company-operated stand alone locations; no bookstore, super market, or airport Starbucks will be shuttered. A recent study by analyst Sharon Zackfia, found that 54 percent of the closing locations are within two miles of another Starbucks. The study also breakdowns the closures by region:

The central part of the country will lose about 13 percent of Starbucks stores that are operated directly by the Seattle company. The Southeast will lose 10 percent, the Northeast 8 percent and the West 5 percent.

After checking the list, I'm relieved to see that none of the Starbucks I frequent are closing. To find out which stores are vanishing in your neighborhood, check out the complete list and read more.

This Just In: Hayden Panettiere Buys a House to Cheer About

Hayden Panettiere, better known as Claire Bennet the cheerleader who cannot die on NBC's Heroes, has taken time out from saving the whales to drop $2.635 million on a house in Los Angeles, according to Real Estalker.

The teenage Panettiere, who'll turn 20 next year, has room to grow in the 3,120-square-foot, three-bedroom, thee-bath house, which was constructed in 1962. The house, which is definitely modern in look and feel, features floor-to-ceiling windows, an open, loft-style layout, a newly renovated kitchen, a swimming pool, a stone fireplace, and a large deck, perfect for entertaining (or throwing huge parties).

I think that this house is a nice choice, and while it's bigger than most noncelebs' homes, it's less than half the size of many celeb mansions, such as Tori Spelling's new pad. I think this could be a really stunning house if Panettiere gets the right designer in there. Perhaps Top Design's Preston Lee is available?

Sprains and strains are usually minor injuries that often result from sports or exercise, but can easily result from any physical activity. Sprains refer to an injury to a ligament (the connective tissue that links bones together at joints), most often in the ankle, knee, elbow, or wrist. Strains are tears in muscle tissue, commonly occurring in the muscles that support the calf, thigh, groin, and shoulder. Sometimes sprains and strains can be severe, leading to weeks of rehabilitation.

Signs and Symptoms

Strains:

Muscle stiffness, tenderness, or soreness
Swelling

Sprains:

Pain at the time of injury
Swelling
Bruising

You may have joint instability or disability if the injury is serious, involving a muscle or ligament tear.

What Causes It?

Sprains generally result from a twisting force applied to a joint while it is bearing weight, which causes the ligament to stretch beyond its natural limit. Sprains usually occur with sudden, unexpected movement (a fall or a twist). Muscle strains occur when the weight load on a muscle is greater than the weakest part of the muscle can bear. Strains usually happen during activities that require your muscle to stretch and bear weight at the same time. You are at risk for a sprain or strain if you do the following.

Exercise without warming up properly
Use athletic equipment that does not fit properly
Participate in sports and activities that you are not conditioned for

What to Expect at Your Provider's Office

Your health care provider may take an x-ray. If your injury is severe, your health provider may also order an MRI. Your injured limb may need to be wrapped in an elastic bandage or put in a soft cast.

Treatment Options

Your health care provider probably will recommend that you treat the injury with RICE: rest, ice (wrapped in a cloth or a towel -- do not apply ice directly to the skin), compression, and elevation of the affected area. Apply RICE as needed over the first several days following the injury.

Ice reduces pain, bleeding, and inflammation. It may also reduce secondary damage to other parts of the joint. Bleeding and inflammation may play an important role in the healing process. For more severe cases, wrap the affected area in an elastic bandage. A cast may be required to stabilize injuries.

You should limit activity that involves the affected area for an average of seven days. You may also be referred to a physical therapist, who will tailor exercises to help you strengthen muscles, joints, and ligaments.

Drug Therapies

Over-the-counter pain relievers (analgesics) and anti-inflammatory agents usually help. However, you should talk to your doctor for adequate dosing. When injuries are more severe or chronic, continued use of analgesics may lead to aggravation of the condition. Analgesics should not be used to mask pain so that you can resume activity without immobilizing the injured area.

Aspirin -- 325 mg, 1 to 2 tablets every 4 hours
Naproxen -- 210 mg, 2 to 3 tablets every 8 to 12 hours
Ibuprofen -- 200 mg, 2 to 3 tablets every 4 to 6 hours
Analgesic balms
Acetaminophen -- 325 mg, 1 to 2 tablets every 4 hours

Complementary and Alternative Therapies

Specific nutrients and herbs may help the body restore damaged tissue, reduce swelling, and provide pain relief.

Nutrition and Supplements

Vitamin C (250 - 500 mg two times a day) and beta-carotene (50,000 IU per day for 5 days) both help the body produce connective tissue and may reduce pain.
Bromelain (250 - 500 mg three times a day between meals), an enzyme derived from pineapple, has anti-inflammatory effects and helps reduce swelling.
Zinc (15 - 30 mg per day) helps wounds heal faster.
Vitamin E (400 IU/day) has antioxidant effects.
Glucosamine and chondroitin, popular supplements for arthritis, may also help wounds heal faster, though studies are lacking. Usual doses are: glucosamine, 1,500 per day; chondroitin, 800 - 1,200 mg per day, divided in two to four doses. They are often combined in one supplement.

Herbs

Herbs are generally a safe way to strengthen and tone the body's systems. As with any therapy, you should work with your provider to get your problem diagnosed before starting any treatment. You may use herbs as dried extracts (capsules, powders, teas), glycerites (glycerine extracts), or tinctures (alcohol extracts). Unless otherwise indicated, you should make teas with 1 tsp. herb per cup of hot water. Steep covered 5 - 10 minutes for leaf or flowers, and 10 - 20 minutes for roots. Drink 2 - 4 cups per day. You may use tinctures alone or in combination as noted.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) helps reduce swelling and makes the effect of bromelain stronger. Take 250 - 500 mg each of turmeric and bromelain, three times a day between meals.
Applied topically, the active ingredient in horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum), called aescin, may reduce tenderness and swelling. Apply a gel with 2% aescin to the affected area every 2 - 3 hours.
Applied topically, a gel containing comfrey (Symphytum officinale) may also help reduce pain and swelling.You should use comfrey only topically. Do NOT take internally.
White willow (Salix alba) acts similar to aspirin and can reduce inflammation and swelling. Make a tea by boiling 1/2 teaspoon (2 grams) of bark in 8 ounces of water. Drink up to 5 cups per day. If you are allergic to aspirin or salicylates, check with your doctor before using white willow.

Homeopathy

Few studies have examined the effectiveness of specific homeopathic remedies. Professional homeopaths, however, may recommend one or more of the following treatments for sprains and strains based on their knowledge and clinical experience. Before prescribing a remedy, homeopaths take into account a person's constitutional type. In homeopathic terms, a person's constitution is his or her physical, emotional, and intellectual makeup. An experienced homeopath assesses all of these factors when determining the most appropriate remedy for a particular individual.

Arnica (topical) -- this remedy is generally considered the first-choice homeopathic treatment for acute injury. It is applied topically in addition to an appropriate internal remedy. You should not use arnica, however, if skin the has open cuts over the injured area.
Arnica (internal) -- for injuries with swelling, bruising, and inflammation. You should switch to another appropriate remedy once swelling has subsided.
Bryonia -- for swollen injuries that get worse with movement. This remedy is especially useful for chest, shoulder, and hamstring injuries. It is often used if Arnica or Rhus toxicodendron fails.
Ledum -- for sprained ankles that feel cold or numb but improve with cold applications (such as ice) and worsen with warm applications.
Rhus toxicodendron -- this remedy is used after the initial symptoms of an injury have improved (such as from using Arnica). For pain during initial movement that subsides with more movement.The affected area generally feels hot. This remedy is especially appropriate for lifting or overexertion injuries.
Ruta -- for tendonitis, torn ligaments, and other injuries that feel hot to the touch. Ruta is very useful as a treatment for overexertion injuries, such as tennis elbow and runner's knee. Symptoms tend to be worse with initial movement, but continued motion does not bring relief.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture appears to be effective for sprains and strains. One study of 20 people found that acupuncture improved feelings of soreness. Acupuncturists often apply moxibustion (a technique in which the herb mugwort is burned over specific acupuncture points) in combination with needling in order to strengthen or deepen the treatment for this condition.

Chiropractic

Chiropractors commonly treat sprain and strain injuries, particularly those with pain and diminished function. A significant number of people who visit chiropractors do so for sprain and strain injuries. In addition to joint manipulation, chiropracters use other treatments for sprains and strains, such as applications of ice and heat and ultrasound or electrical muscle stimulation. Stretching and strengthening exercises are also often recommended to aid recovery and rehabilitation.

In a study of people with ankle sprains, researchers compared the effectiveness of chiropractic joint manipulation with an anti-inflammatory medication. They found that joint manipulation was as effective as the anti-inflammatory medication in improving pain and flexibility, but it was more effective than the medication in improving range of motion.

Massage

Therapeutic massage is effective at increasing circulation and may relieve spasm in surrounding muscle groups.

Following Up

Your health care provider probably won't need to see you again unless your injury was severe or you have complications.

Be careful of recurring sprains and strains. Once a muscle or tendon is injured, it is susceptible to reinjury, especially if you return to full activity too soon. Sprains and strains are easy to prevent. Basic physical fitness and strength training with proper warm-up and cool-down reduce the stress to muscles and joints.

Top Design, Episode One: "Impress the Best"

If you've been reading my interviews, you know that I'm excited about this second season of Top Design, so I was pleased to tune in last night for the first episode. First off, I was surprised by the amount of star power in the contestant pool (well, for reality television at least), including one interior designer, Preston Lee, who I'd already featured on CasaSugar. Also in the mix was a Martha Stewart Living senior style editor (Eddie) and actor Ricky Schroder's wife (Andrea), among other talented contestants.

For the first challenge, the designers had to furnish an entire apartment in two days, with the designers divided into four teams, working on four loft space apartments for four-star clients.

Each team had to design for one of the show's judges or hosts, including India Hicks, Margaret Russell, Jonathan Adler, and Kelly Wearstler. I love that one of Jonathan Adler's design requirements was "very dog-friendly." Cute! Kelly Wearstler gave a strict no-television edict (I wonder how the Top Design producers reacted to that) and a place for displaying her flea market finds. Margaret Russell requested color and asked her team to stay away from beiges and neutrals. India Hicks asked for an apartment with a "Caribbean plantation feel to it."

Oh, and if this wasn't enough of a challenge, the designers had only $2,000 to work with to furnish and decorate the entire apartment! I actually loved the money limitation, since the designers were forced to use unusual sources, such as a salvage store and thrift shops, to create their spaces. Not only did this take their designs out of the usual retail box, it provided incentive to repurpose old, potentially tired pieces into something new.

Just as things were getting interesting, the designers were interrupted for a "pop design quiz," where they had to make individual shadow boxes out of everyday objects found in their rooms. I loved Wisit's shadow box, as well as Jennifer's, Eddie's, Kerry's, and Robert's pop designs. In the end, Wisit, Ondine, Eddie, and Kerry were all granted immunity, guaranteeing that they couldn't be eliminated in this challenge.

There were some incredibly silly mistakes made over the course of the episode, including ordering the wrong color of wallpaper, forgetting to turn off faucets, and seeping paint all over the floors. Some of the teams had a very difficult time cooperating, and already it seems as if there is some cattiness brewing between contestants. I loved the redesign of Kelly Wearstler's loft and thought Jonathan Adler's loft looked nice, too However there were some straight-up ugly additions to Margaret and India's loft spaces, with some truly incongruous choices. (Serge's akimbo mirror in the corner? Just. Weird.)

Kelly's team was granted the top design, which was well deserved, with Jonathan's team coming in second. India and Margaret's teams were in the bottom two. Ultimately, Serge was sent home, which I think was more than fair.

I think that this season is off to a promising start, and I love the low-budget limitation, which I hope will be carried throughout the season. I'm also grateful that the judge's deliberation process seems to be significantly shorter, with more time spent on the process of creating the spaces. All in all, a good introduction to season two.

Jessica Simpson covered up her super toned arms but showed off a sexy back at the party for Tim Gunn's Guide To Style in NY last night. Not my favorite make up look on Jess, but at least she was having a blast inside the party with Natasha Bedingfield (who was Nick's first rumored flame post-Jess, remember? Obviously water under the bridge). The party was populated by some ProjRun alums like Laura Bennett, Austin Scarlett and Season 3 winner Jeffrey Sebelia (yays) out to support their on screen mentor's new project. Check out his new show tonight (plusssss the Season 4 Project Runway designers - eeee!) at 10 on Bravo! I enjoyed the preview episode last night and can't wait to see more.

Oprah's ball - another awkward appearance by Tomatie

Oprah hosted the Legends Ball last night at the Bacara Resort and Spa in Santa Barbara. Guests included Tomatie, Barbara Walters, Halle Berry, John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston, Kimora Lee Simmons, Mariah Carey, Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks and Sidney Poitier.
