Coveted Crib: An Unconventional French Cottage

From the exterior, Gary and Samantha Peterson's Chamonix cottage, which was featured in Marie Claire Maison, is resolutely a traditional Alpine house. But push open its front door, and you'll be confronted with cheerfully decorated interiors bursting with acid colors, massively proportioned spaces, and walls dressed in white, throwing you into a ski vacation universe turned upside down. Despite the fact that all conventions have been thrown to the wind, and your average cottage kitsch is notably missing, the Petersons' cottage is a welcoming mountain escape, and certainly what I'd call a coveted crib. Midday Muse: Vast Bath

In this Tuscan farmhouse, the architect designed the bathroom like a lounge, blending styles and eras as you might a living room. The old clawfoot tub is centered in front of the window for a relaxing view, and there's little else, aside from a tall cabinet shelving essentials and an armchair, to clutter up the space. While the blue walls and tub, terracotta tiles, and rustic copper faucet certainly create a beautiful palette, it's not the style or color of the room that attracts me - it's the size. I'd easily sacrifice some square footage in my bedroom or living room to claim this vast bath.Of course the cool tones create a soothing atmosphere, but the room's magnitude puts me in a happy place. In most homes, our bathrooms are not much bigger than a coat closet, and there's something so claustrophobic about that. I suppose in a way the composition of our homes speaks to what we value in our society; in most cases, our garages and living rooms are the largest spaces. Are cars and TV what's most important? Sometimes I think we need to reassess. Forget prime time, if I were the owner of this home, I'd take a nice long soak and curl up with a book in this private retreat any day.

Midday Muse: Luggage Furniture

We've all heard the expression, "living out of a suitcase." And, until now, it's been associated with temporary, not ideal living situations — "slumming it." But, Marie Claire Maison has envisioned tes valises in a whole new form. Here, inspired by traditional hard-case trunks (think Joe Versus the Volcano), two wooden shelves painted fluorescent yellow were installed in a metal suitcase to store Summer attire, like a mini closet. Need seating, not storage? A wheeled nylon bag makes a pouf when placed around a coffee table, if you fill it with clothes or packaging bubbles to keep it soft. Got a basic military trunk? Drill holes into its base, and add casters: an instant coffee table that you can easily move about on your terrace! A carry-on bag makes a giant vanity box when you add mirrors to its top with velcro, and hang jewelry from a kilt safety pin. Or, canvas sailor duffel bags make back pillows for your a low-lying sofa when stuffed. Think outside of the suitcase!

Get the Look: Refined Comfort

While this living room looks extremely refined, it manages to avoid seeming overly precious or uncomfortable. Naturally, the shag carpet adds an instant element of casualness to the room, but we've all seen that done before. This room's refined comfort is thanks to an amalgam of all of the elements in the space. The oversized sofa is even more comfy given its dozen accent pillows and the informality of the global light fixtures also adds to the fun. The wooden frames are very baroque and museum worthy, but for all intents and purposes there could be photocopies displayed in them, and their tight, off-kilter arrangement shakes things up a bit. The fact that the side tables are notably lacking any display objects, like a porcelain bowl or a small sculpture, also makes the room more inviting. Would You Like to Live Here?

Lit by a series of multi-colored lanterns, this large living space is divided into several separate areas, and furnished with painted salvaged chairs, a velvet sofa upholstered with mismatched cushions, and a bed covered with a variety of pillows in slightly dissimilar hues. To say that it's colorful would be a drastic understatement. I'd live there in a second, would you?

Cool Idea: Hide-a-Bed Couch

At first glance, the couch on the right, featured on Marie Claire Maison, looks like a typical modern loveseat. But thanks to my wonderful (but somewhat rusty) French language skills, I've deduced that this is not the case. Half of the bed actually disappears behind the the closet doors, whose bottom has been sawn off. Coveted Crib: Emily Walker's Canadian Charm

With talents like Philippe Starck and Tord Boontje and magazines like Living Etc and Marie Claire Maison, Europe always gets props for turning out great interior design. But our neighbor to the North, Canada, deserves a round of applause as well. Canadian House and Home is one of my favorite shelter magazines, and it comes as no surprise that the pub's staff has envy-inducing style as well. Merchandise department designer Emily Walker turned her rundown bungalow into a stunning home with a perfect balance of patterns and solids, a smart mix of splurges and steals, and a unique, cohesive color palette.
