On the Market: Anne Heche's Canadian Beauty

It seems as if the cancellation of their show Men in Trees has forced Anne Heche and costar/sweetheart James Tupper to put their charming, well-appointed Vancouver home on the market. Since the show is no longer being shot in gorgeous British Columbia, the couple must cut their losses and head back to Los Angeles.

And what a loss! This house has great bones and gorgeous woodwork, and while it's big, it's not ostentatious. Sitting on nearly an acre of land, the home's grounds include old growth forests, a pond, and a waterfall. Sounds perfect to me. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom house is selling for $2.45 million.

Me and Orson Welles: A Likeable Film For Theater-Lovers

Zac Efron can act, people! Okay, so he's not going to win an Oscar for his performance in Me and Orson Welles, but he does take a step away from the tween territory of High School Musical and 17 Again to prove that he can hold his own among more experienced performers.

Efron stars as the "Me" in Me and Orson Welles, an over confident aspiring young actor named Richard whose only prior work includes a couple of high school productions - until he lucks into a bit part in Welles's stage production of Julius Caesar. Richard has a romanticized view of theater, but once he enters Welles's company, he's forced to learn the real nature of what goes on behind the scenes.

Ready to burst his bubble is his new mentor, Orson Welles (Christian McKay). A philanderer and liar with an inflated ego, Welles takes Richard under his wing but knocks him down at the same time. Throw into the mix Welles's tenacious assistant Sonja (Claire Danes) who makes goo-goo eyes at the young guy, and it's clear that Richard is in way over his head (even though he seems clueless about it).

British actor Christian McKay as Welles is larger than life - he plays the role as if the director is always acting and putting on a show, even in his personal moments. Welles could be an unlikeable character, but McKay makes him a guy you love to hate. Even though Efron is the more recognizable face and handles his role well, McKay's performance is the one most critics will talk about.

The film is enjoyable, but it fails to pull you in. My biggest concern is that it won't find an audience. Older viewers might appreciate Welles and the music of the era, but the appeal of Efron might be lost on them. On the other hand, Efron's fans might find the Welles element to be a snooze. Honestly, it's probably best suited to those who have a passion for theater. I enjoyed watching rehearsals with the Caesar cast (which features a ragtag mix of faces, including Ben Chaplin and James Tupper). The office politics and mini-breakdowns that take place before the curtain goes up make the film fun.

My advice? If you do choose to see it on the big screen, catch it quickly before it goes to rental.

Pilot Watch: Mercy

The networks have announced their Fall schedules, but which series will actually be worth watching? Throughout the Summer, as I watch the pilots, I'll be posting my first impressions. Note that a lot can change before a show actually makes it to air, so these aren't reviews, just quick thoughts on how the shows look now. Today's pick is NBC's nursing drama Mercy, which is pinch-hitting for Parenthood on the Fall schedule.

What's it about? Mercy follows a trio of nurses - and the doctors and other hospital workers who surround them - in and out of the hospital where they work, showing their interactions with patients and the way work spills over into their daily lives.

Who's in it? Taylor Schilling, Michelle Trachtenberg, Jamie Lee Kirchner, James Tupper

The good: The show swings for a sort of Grey's Anatomy-with-nurses vibe, and Schilling's Veronica is like an even more damaged, but still appealing, Meredith Grey. The pilot does a pretty solid job of introducing the characters and giving us a thumbnail sketch of their personalities. The writers seem to have lots of material to mine in the relationships - both personal and professional - between nurses and doctors.

The bad: I'm really not sure what kind of show Mercy wants to be. A drama? A dramedy? A soap? Something seems off in the tone, because in the course of one hour it's snarky, deeply dramatic, and a little romantic, but it also doesn't any of those marks particularly well. I think it's a show that needs some time to figure itself out - and that might have happened if it had gotten to keep its original midseason slot. Now that it's airing in the Fall instead, I'm worried it'll be a mess - or, at best, a copycat of other medical dramas.

Will I watch? Unless I hear and see better things as September approaches, I'm tempted to tune this one out.

All the Ladies Love Ashton at His Big Night

Ashton Kutcher had two ladies, Demi Moore and Rumer Willis, on his arm last night at the LA premiere of Spread. He spent a few months last year working on the movie, which has him starring as a womanizing man about town. He was also joined by his female costars, Margarita Levieva and Anne Heche, for the stroll down the red carpet before the movie's Aug. 14 release. This morning Ashton was up bright and early to bring The Beautiful Life to the TCAs, where he responded to questions about Mischa, saying she "never missed a day of work" and acts as a guide for the younger cast members. More on all that later.

NBC's New Slate: Chuck in 2010, No More Earl

On the heels of ABC's announcements, NBC has declared what its Fall schedule will look like, with some shows not returning to the network and new original programming coming in. We'd already heard much of NBC's news, but here are some interesting tidbits from today:

NBC has dropped My Name Is Earl and Medium, though it's possible other networks may pick those up. CBS appears fairly likely to snag Medium while Earl could land at Fox or ABC.
Chuck fans will have to wait until after the 2010 Olympics to get their fix, as the show won't return until February 2010. When it does return, though, one character will be working at Subway, as the sandwich chain is a major sponsor for the show.
Heroes will take the 8 p.m. time slot in the Fall in an effort to draw viewers to the new show Trauma at 9 p.m.
Friday Night Lights doesn't yet have a start date on DirecTV, and it's expected to be back on NBC in Summer 2010.

NBC Entertainment Co-Chairman Ben Silverman is proud of the upcoming schedule with its mix of fan-favorites and new original programs: "NBC has picked up more scripted shows than last season even with The Jay Leno Show at 10 p.m. We're incredibly excited about our new and returning series and have more comedy programming than anyone else, as well as two of the most buzzed about new shows, Community and Parenthood. We can't wait for the Fall."

The New Shows

Community: Emmy Award-winning directors Joe and Anthony Russo (Arrested Development) comes Community, a smart comedy series about higher education - and lower expectations. The student body at Greendale Community College is made up of high-school losers, newly divorced housewives, and old people who want to keep their minds active. Within these not-so-hallowed halls, Community focuses on a band of misfits, at the center of which is a fast-talkin' lawyer whose degree has been revoked (Joel McHale), who form a study group and end up learning a lot more about themselves than they do about their course work. In addition to McHale, the series also stars: Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, and comedy legend Chevy Chase.

Parenthood: When Sarah Braverman (Maura Tierney), a financially strapped single mother, returns home to her parents and siblings in Berkeley, Calif. after packing up her Fresno apartment and uprooting her two inconvenienced kids, Amber (Mae Whitman) and Drew (Miles Heizer), she is greeted by her opinionated father, Zeek (Craig T. Nelson), and strong mother, Camille (Bonnie Bedelia), who are privately dealing with their own marital issues. As Sarah is reunited with her siblings - sister, Julia (Erika Christensen), and brothers Crosby (Dax Shepard) and Adam (Peter Krause) - all struggling with issues of their own, it's clear that the Braverman reunion is just what they need to face the everyday challenges of modern family life.

Trauma: Like an adrenaline shot to the heart, Trauma is an intense, action-packed look at one of the most dangerous medical professions in the world: first responder paramedics. When emergencies occur, the trauma team from San Francisco General is first on the scene, traveling by land, by sea or by air to reach their victims in time. Mercy
Mercy a new medical drama with a unique point of view, portrays the lives of the staff at Mercy Hospital as seen through the eyes of those who know it best - its nurses. Day One

Beginning with the immediate aftermath of the cataclysmic event, an eclectic band of survivors - played by Adam Campbell (Date Movie), Catherine Dent (The Shield), Julie Gonzalo (Eli Stone), David Lyons (ER), Derek Mio (Greek), Carly Pope (24), Thekla Reuten (Sleeper Cell) and Addison Timlin (Cashmere Mafia) - strives to rebuild society as they unravel the mysteries of what happened and face their uncertain future. 100 Questions
Emmy winner James Burrows (Will & Grace, Friends) directs 100 Questions, a new comedy series written and executive-produced by Christopher Moynihan (For Your Consideration) that provides hilarious answers to 100 questions about love. Charlotte Payne (Sophie Winkleman, Peep Show) is looking for love and has rejected multiple marriage proposals - but she has yet to meet Mr. Right. When she joins a popular online dating site, she gets a little help from her dating counselor Ravi (Amir Talai, The Ex List) - who requires her to take a 100-question compatibility test. The questions aren’t easy for Charlotte to answer, and each one requires her to recount a poignant and humorous time in her life with friends Leslie (Elizabeth Ho, Women’s Murder Club), Jill (Joy Suprano, NBC’s Law & Order), Mike (Christopher Moynihan For Your Consideration) and Wayne (David Walton, Quarterlife). The test becomes a journey of self-discovery for Charlotte who begins to realize what she truly wants in a relationship. Ron West (Psych), Kelly Kulchak (Psych) and Michelle Nader (King of Queens) join Moynihan as executive producers. The series is produced by Universal Media Studios and Tagline.

NBC Announces Six New Shows - and Leaves Some in Limbo

NBC revealed a big chunk of its primetime plans for next TV season this morning, announcing six new dramas, four comedies, and four renewed series. But it left a lot of questions open, too - including the fate of Chuck and Law and Order and when all of these shows will fit on the new primetime schedule.

Those answers are supposed to come May 19 - the same week the rest of the networks will announce their schedules. But for now, here's what we know: The four new dramas are Parenthood, based on the feature film of the same name; Trauma, a fast-paced medical show; Mercy, another medical show revolving around the lives of nurses; and Day One, about the aftermath of a global catastrophe. The comedies are Community, about a band of misfits at a community college, and 100 Questions, about a young woman looking for love online.

Returning for sure next season are Heroes, Parks and Recreation, Southland, and Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday, which aired a few special episodes before last Fall's presidential election and will air six more times this Fall. Despite reports of a renewal over the weekend, no decision was announced about Medium. The network previously renewed The Office, 30 Rock, The Biggest Loser, The Celebrity Apprentice, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, and Friday Night Lights and had announced the new reality series The Marriage Ref, Breakthrough with Tony Robbins, and Who Do You Think You Are?

Parenthood
From the executive producers of the box-office hit Parenthood - Ron Howard and Brian Grazer (Oscar winners for A Beautiful Mind), and writer/executive producer Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights) - this contemporary re-imagining of the blockbuster film depicts the colorful and imperfect Braverman family - four grown siblings sharing the headaches, heartaches and joy of being parents. The star-studded cast includes Peter Krause, Maura Tierney, Craig T. Nelson, Dax Shepard, Bonnie Bedelia, Monica Potter, Erika Christensen and Sarah Ramos. Trauma
Executive producer Peter Berg (NBC’s Friday Night Lights) delivers Trauma, the first high-octane medical drama series to live exclusively in the field where the real action is. Like an adrenaline shot to the heart, Trauma is an intense, action-packed look at one of the most dangerous medical professions in the world: first responder paramedics. ABC TCA Party Brings Out the All Stars

ABC closed the TCAs with an all star party that included the Cashmere ladies, Big Shot men (more on them soon) and gorgeous newlyweds Jerry O'Connell and Rebecca Romijn. The happy couple stayed by each others sides as long as they could before reporters attacked and them and asked them about their various shows on the network. My favorites of the night were Dylan McDermott and Angie Harmon who seemed to be having a fun time together even though her husband, Jason Sehorn was there by her side as well. The Private Practice cast came and once again we are excited about Taye Diggs returning to TV. During their panel, Shonda Rhimes exposed lots of secrets for both PP and the upcoming season of Grey's.
