MSN currently has a few downloadable stencils for creating your very own presidential (or vice presidential) pumpkins. While the designs are cheeky, and carving your very own Obama/McCain jack-o'-lantern is just another way to show your support, a part of me feels like maybe we should lay off of the politics for the light-hearted, child-oriented evening. Then again, I'm sure we all find certain politicians pretty scary!Source

However, I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to my pumpkin - I usually just cut out a jagged-toothed grin, and leave it at that. What do you do at your house?

Before you throw out the guts of that jack-o'-lantern you've carved, try this basic, healthy recipe for roasted pumpkin seeds.

Pumpkin seeds are loaded with nutrients. They're high in both plant sterols, which may help lower cholesterol, and phytochemicals, which promote prostate health. Pumpkin seeds are a good source of protein, fiber, potassium, and magnesium. Try them alone, toss over a salad, or get creative.

A Piece O'Pumpkin Advice For Jack-O'-Lantern Snacks

Since pumpkin is high on my list of healthy foods for a chubby or rumbly puppy tummy no matter the season, I feel the need to address those carved creations, if that's your kind of thing.

Not only can an open flame pose a danger, the unlit pumpkin is not pet-safe! While the fresh stuff is fine for furry friends, don't leave the jack-o'-lantern within paws' reach - after being carved and exposed to air, the vegetable grows bacteria and mold, which is very dangerous to doggies. Save the gourds for the garbage come Nov. 1 and pick up some canned pumpkin instead!

Trying to trick your children out of sweet and fancy treats like Goblins, Ghosts and Spider Cupcakes?

Add a little festive flare to their breakfast by making pumpkin pancakes! Not only is pumpkin a great source of beta-carotene, vitamin C, and potassium, but a sprinkle of cardamom will help aid the digestive system.

Let your lil ones decorate their mini jack-o'-lanterns with a handful of chocolate chips, raisins or cookie icing for dramatic effect.

Pumpkin Pancakes

Ingredients

1/2 cup canned pumpkin
1/2 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 large egg yolk
1/4 cup cake flour
4 large egg whites
1/4 teaspoon salt
Cooking spray
Maple syrup or honey

Directions
Whisk together pumpkin, yogurt, baking soda, egg yolk, and flour. Whisk egg whites with salt; fold into pumpkin mixture. Heat a large nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray over medium heat. Spoon in 1/3 cup batter for each pancake. Flip when tops are covered with bubbles and edges are slightly brown (about 3 minutes per side). Drizzle with syrup or honey.

If you don't have time to get out to a pumpkin patch this season and carve a geeky pumpkin, you can probably fit in a Lego Jack-o'-Lantern!

The Lego website has step-by-step instructions on how to put it together, and all you need for your own 3D Lego pumpkin is two sets of Lego pumpkin packs and some patience.

It certainly beats trying to get that pumpkin muck out from under your fingernails!
