As talented as our favorite interior designers are, unfortunately, we can't all afford them. But, that doesn't mean all hope is lost for those of us without a decorator budget. We can still take inspiration from them, and then by thinking analytically, create utterly chic homes for ourselves, which will inspire our friends.

The New York Times article Living in a Design Time Capsule discusses those homes "that have gone untouched for decades and give visitors the sensation of being in a décor-warp." I've seen many of these in my day, including those of several friends and family members. One Su Casa member even shared photos of her parents' plastic slipcovered sofa with me.

Since her split with Guy Ritchie, Madonna has parked herself in an Upper East Side apartment, moving on from their shared historic estate in Wiltshire, UK, the Ashcombe House. But, according to the Mirror, she misses the English countryside so much that she's asked her architects to re-create her country home room by room in her NYC digs. Let me add that the Mirror is not always the most reliable source, so this news bit still has rumor status.Apparently, she's hired people "to go out and troll the Upper East Side boutiques for candelabras, side tables, and period chaises" and even had the wood floors of her new Georgian-style townhouse "ripped up and replaced with terracotta tiles, similar to Ashcombe."

The Washington Post recently caught up with Nick Olsen, a protégé of high-profile interior designer Miles Redd and former "Deal Hunter" for Domino's now-defunct blog, Daily Dose. The 27-year-old designer has been discount decorating since his teens, and working under Redd for five years. In other words, he knows a thing or two.

Yesterday, I toured Metropolitan Home's Modern by Design showhome in San Francisco, a historic, 7,700-square-foot house in the heart of the exclusive Pacific Heights neighborhood, which has been transformed into an exquisite example of contemporary design with the help of a savvy developer and a handful of the country's top designers.
The house, known as "Baker Acres," was originally built in 1904 as a single-family home, but over the years has served as a boarding house for service men and women, a guest house for recent graduates and San Francisco transfers, and a hotel. Along the way, the building's exquisite architectural details, grand rooms, and dramatic staircase were destroyed, and the home was stripped down to a shell.

You're well on your way to becoming your own decorator. The next step is to measure and plan, something that educated interior designers are experts at. In fact, most interior design schools require that you draw a scaled design plan as part of the application process.

I'm back with more tips on becoming your own decorator. Unless you have absolutely no furnishings, or the budget of Bill Gates which can afford you to start from scratch, you'll need to take inventory of what you already own.

The Tyra Banks Show recently called upon one of my Designer Spotlights, Kyle Schuneman, to transform its drab and boring office into a fabulous workspace. Kyle started by painting the walls a serene blue with eco-friendly, zero-VOC paint. Then, he anchored the room with a Room and Board Parsons Desk and brought in a file cabinet with classic lines for storage.
