On the Market: A Frank Lloyd Wright Home in Central California

If you have a love for midcentury architecture and $2.7 million to spare, then consider moving to California's Central Valley to live in the beautiful, wonderfully maintained Fawcett House. This 3,700-square-foot home was designed by the famous modern architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1955, and it was completed in 1961, two years after Wright died. The six-bedroom, four-and-a-half bath home is situated on 80 acres, and hunkers down into the farming landscape, with a low-pitched roof and angular wings that reach out into the fields.

The home was owned by Randall and Harriet Fawcett, who raised four children lived, worked, and died within its walls. The couple were ardent lovers of Wright's architecture, and even though the home's construction was delayed by a few years, they were always enthusiastic about their house.

Designed in a modified U-shape, the home's rooms feature Wright's signature designs, including stained glass windows, concrete walls, built-ins, and expansive walls of glass that look out onto the home's swimming pool and gardens. The impressively large living room fireplace dominates the room, at six feet tall by twelve feet wide. The home also features woodwork from George Nakashima, as well as gorgeous Japanese garden design from Fresno-based landscape architect Jim Kamimato.

A recent San Francisco Chronicle article notes that

The building, while not among Wright's best known, is an articulate expression of his design philosophy at the latter stage of his career. He was attempting to create a uniquely North American architectural lexicon, free from classical and European influences, that also eliminated unnecessary elements to ensure homes were within reach of the middle (or at least upper-middle) class.

Coveted Crib: Remodeled to Embrace the Outdoors

Architect Sarah Robinson believes that homes should be inspiring as well as practical. Living in a home built or remodeled by Robinson will likely mean that you will not only have a home that is functional for your daily life, but will also inspire you to live that life more fully. This Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture graduate accomplishes such a lofty goal in many ways, including consideration of how to marry a building site with the building's design.

When she tackled the remodel of a Northern California midcentury modern home, she considered the home's physical location - the side of a hill nestled amongst redwoods and oak trees. The home's original design was blessed with good design, including a classic midcentury-modern design, and mahogany cabinetry, doors, and paneling throughout the structure.

Robinson and her team added 1,200 square feet of space to the existing home without adding any space to the building's footprint. This meant that the home's outdoor space was preserved, while adding valuable space for the family to spread out. The remodel features a vaulted ceiling with a huge dormer that filters light while ensuring privacy, expanses of glass, and a bathroom that opens to the outdoor space. Cool Idea: Frank Lloyd Wright in Thread

Craftster member PencilNeck's embroidery creativity has bowled me over. She made this embroidery of a Frank Lloyd Wright blueprint as a Christmas gift for a family member who works with architectural design. She embroidered almost exclusively with backstitching for the project, and found blue floss to match the blueprint color.

PencilNeck writes, "My biggest headache was struggling with fabric tension and possibly the weave of the fabric causing my lines to look not so straight despite my following the printed lines exactly . . . It helped that my husband kept reminding me that this is an embroidered interpretation of a blueprint and will not look the same as a pen drawing. The obsessive-compulsive side of me took over and turned this into a monster of a project, but I finally stepped back, looked at it from a distance, and pronounced it acceptable."

I'd say! This looks more than acceptable to my eyes. It's such a unique idea, and her execution is impressive. I don't doubt that the family member who's lucky enough to receive this gift will declare it his or her favorite of the season.

On the Market: Frank Lloyd Wright's Palmer House

The Palmer House - a 2,000-square-foot, one-story home in Ann Arbor, MI, designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright - is on the market for the first time since it was commissioned in 1950. The asking price is $1.5 million. The three-bedroom, two-bath Usonian-style home sits on 1.5 wooded acres, close to the University of Michigan, where its former owner worked. The house includes many free-standing pieces of Wright furniture, including tables, chairs ("Origami" chairs), and ottomans, which are "as much a part of the house as the house is of the landscape," says Brian Reis, assistant curator for the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust in Chicago. It also includes a collection of Wright documents, and a lovely teahouse is tucked neatly behind the house. It's certainly a very rare opportunity to own a piece of architectural history, and at a relatively affordable price. I'm sure there will be a lot of interest in the home, particularly from those with an interest in interior design and architecture. And, preservationists should be pleased: The deed to the house "requires any changes to be approved by the nonprofit Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy." Coveted Crib: Frank Lloyd Wright's Massaro House

Perhaps the most famous architect of the 20th century, Frank Lloyd Wright left behind a legacy of fascinating houses, as well as amazing sketches for homes that were never built. In 2007, one of these sketches, for a home to be built into a large piece of bedrock on Lake Mahopac in upstate New York, was finally designed and constructed. Owner Joe Massaro hired architect and Wright scholar Thomas Heinz to flesh out the design from only five original sketches. To see the results, check out the slideshow. Source
