Elizabeth Rogers, the best-selling author of The Green Book, recently gave me some tips for throwing parties that won't negatively impact the planet. So many times when we're busy organizing a backyard bash or a big dinner party, we forget the impact that all of our disposable cups and plastic party favors can have on the environment. But not to fear! Just because you're keeping the earth in mind doesn't mean that your party has to be any less fun. In fact, it can be even more so - and these tips are even budget friendly! Elizabeth recommends that, "While preparing for your party, stop by a local swap meet or thrift store for fun vintage items you can reuse all summer long."

Instead of running through dozens of plastic cups and paper plates, vintage glass-wear and dishes found at swap meets, will add a unique touch to your dinner party. Using dishes already in existence instead of buying brand new ones or disposable is 100% eco friendly. Plus they can be reused all summer long, saving you upwards of $100 in disposable paper, plastic and Styrofoam products.
Approximately 70 million bottles of water are drunk in America everyday and, because petroleum is used to manufacture these bottles, the impact on the environment is significant. For your party use vintage glass pitchers filled with filtered water. My favorite is PUR because it adds an extra level of filtration, so it has a crisp taste. Your guests will love the vintage feel, and you’ll be saving yourself the cost of buying all those plastic water bottles.
Vintage tablecloths and napkins, found on your swap meet excursion, are a more fashionable way to set your table than paper or plastic throw-away table covers. Antique lace will lend a summery elegance to your party, and after a quick spin through the washing machine it will be ready for your next soiree. Paper napkins and paper towels are two of the reasons paper waste in the US has jumped from 30 million tons to 84 million tons a year since the '60s. So, as well as being more durable, cloth napkins will prevent your party from ending in the trash.
Centerpieces are a sophisticated finishing touch, when decorating for your party. Instead of buying cut flowers that travel in gas-guzzling cooler trucks, and will be wilted and gone before the end of the week, potted plants are a beautiful alternative. Potted orchids require little care and will look stunning in your home after the party has ended. The cost of purchasing several potted plants for your table tends to be less than purchasing bouquets of cut flowers from a florist or the grocery store, plus the flowers will be ready to shine again at your next party.
Light your party with soy candles in Mason jars. You’ll save on electricity, plus soy candles don’t emit carbon or smoke as they burn and purchasing soy candles supports soy farmers. Mason jars, have been used for canning since the 1850’s and these antique glass jars can be purchased for a few dollars at local flee markets. The soft candlelight will lend a charming Midsummer Night’s Eve quality to the evening.

Nominees and Tons of Stars Head Out For Weinsteins' Pre-Oscars Parties!

The stars were all over town last night taking in all the Oscars mania, especially at the Weinstein Company's huge parties! The new SoHo House in West Hollywood and the Chateau Marmont were both brimming with celebrities for the Weinstens' charity events for UNICEF. Nicole Richie looked fantastic in blue out with Joel, who is the official DJ of tonight's show. Carey Mulligan says she's savoring these final days of award season but is also ready for it to be over. Kate Bosworth and Diane Kruger stuck with short, sweet, and colorful despite the dreary weather, and we're especially excited to see what the sexy Inglourious Basterds star wears for the Academy Awards red carpet.

Diane and Joshua Jackson also stopped by the Chanel and Charles Finch dinner, giving us high hopes that he'll be with her this afternoon. First-time nominees Gabourey Sidibe and Christoph Waltz laughed together after seeing each other at tons of events over the past few months. Alexander Skarsgard signed autographs while Gwen Stefani posed with Nicole and Joel. Even The Bachelor's Vienna Girardi and Jake Pavelka got in on the fun! There are only a few hours left before the red carpet starts, and we're gearing with tons of looks back at iconic Oscar moments and will be covering the main event live all night long!

ABC's Fall Plans: Betty on Friday, 5 New Shows on Wednesday

ABC kept Upfronts going on Tuesday by announcing nearly a dozen new shows for next TV season. In total, the network picked up six dramas, four comedies, and a new reality series for Fall and midseason.

Among returning shows, the biggest news is the move of Ugly Betty to Fridays at 9 p.m. In its place on Thursdays is Flash Forward, which has already gotten a big push with some teaser ads during Lost.

Meanwhile, Wednesdays will be all new - and that includes two hours of comedy. Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton get the night started with back-to-back shows Hank and The Middle. Then it moves to the mockumentary-style Modern Family and Courteney Cox's Cougar Town. The night ends with the drama Eastwick, based on the movie The Witches of Eastwick.

Scrubs and Better Off Ted will take over an hour on Tuesday once Dancing with the Stars ends its Fall season, while Castle stays put after Dancing on Monday.

Eastwick: Three very different women find themselves drawn together by a mysterious man who unleashes unique powers in each of them, and this small New England town will never be the same. The series is based on the popular movie The Witches of Eastwick and on the novel of the same title by John Updike. Eastwick stars Rebecca Romijn as Roxie Torcoletti, Lindsay Price as Joanna Frankel, Jamie Ray Newman as Kat Gardener, Paul Gross as Darryl Van Horne, Sara Rue as Penny, Veronica Cartwright as Bun, Johann Urb as Will, Jon Bernthal as Raymond and Ashley Benson as Mia. Flash Forward: When a mysterious event causes the entire world to black out, humanity is given a glimpse into its near future, and every man, woman and child is forced to come to grips with whether their destinies can be avoided or fulfilled. Adapting award-winning author Robert J. Sawyer's revolutionary novel, executive producers David S. Goyer (visionary co-writer of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and Brannon Braga (24, Star Trek: Enterprise invite you to embark on a journey to answer the question, "if you knew what your future held, what would you do?" They work to give the deceased back their names, lest they become - The Forgotten. The Forgotten stars Rupert Penry-Jones as Alex, Reiko Aylesworth as Linda, Michelle Borth as Candace, Bob Stephenson as Walter, Anthony Carrigan as Tyler and Rochelle Aytes as Detective Grace Russell. The series is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Jerry Bruckheimer Television and Warner Bros. Television. Happy Town: Haplin, Minnesota, "Happy Town," is approaching almost a decade of peace after being riddled for years by unsolved kidnappings. But in the wake of this small town's first crime in seven years, some dark truths are being revealed about some familiar faces. They say every town has its secrets that doesn't even begin to describe Happy Town. Happy Town stars Geoff Stults as Tommy Conroy, Lauren German as Henley, Amy Acker as Rachel Conroy, Dean Winters as John Haplin, John Patrick Amedori as Andrew Haplin, Sarah Gadon as Georgia Bravin, Jay Paulson as Larry Root Beer' Rogers, Robert Wisdom as Roger Hobbes and Sam Neill as Merritt Grieves. Cougar Town: Courteney Cox stars as a recently divorced single mother exploring the honest truths about dating and aging in our beauty and youth obsessed culture. Cougar Town stars Courteney Cox as Jules, Christa Miller as Elle, Busy Philipps as Laurie, Dan Byrd as Travis, Brian Van Holt as Bobby, Josh Hopkins as Grayson and Ian Gomez as Andy. Hank: Kelsey Grammer stars in this timely comedy as Hank Pryor, a titan of industry who suddenly finds himself out of work, almost out of money and around a wife and kids for whom he's never made much time. Modern Family: Today's American families come in all shapes and sizes. Shot from the perspective of an unseen documentary filmmaker, this comedy takes a modern look at the complications that come with being a family in 2009. Modern Family stars Ed O'Neill as Jay, Sofa Vergara as Gloria, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell, Eric Stonestreet as Cameron, Ty Burrell as Phil, Julie Bowen as Claire, Sarah Hyland as Haley, Rico Rodriguez as Manny, Nolan Gould as Luke and Ariel Winter as Alex. Shark Tank: From Mark Burnett, executive producer of Survivor and The Apprentice, and Sony Pictures Television comes Shark Tank, an exciting new reality show that gives budding entrepreneurs the chance to make their dreams come true and become successful and possibly wealthy business people. But the entrepreneurs must first try to convince five tough, multi-millionaire tycoons to part with their own hard-earned cash and give them the funding they need to jumpstart their ideas. In these trying economic times, it's difficult for an individual possessing a dream or even a working small business poised for growth to get a loan for a risky venture. BAFTA Noms Announced; Atonement Once Again Most Beloved

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the 2008 nominations, which largely mirror the Globe noms - though there's (unsurprisingly) even more love for Atonement on the other side of the pond. The romantic Joe Wright-directed drama leads the nominations with a whopping 14, while No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood each nabbed nine. La Vie en Rose is another favorite, as is The Bourne Ultimatum, which is one of the few major departures from other recent award nominations.

The acting categories are filled with familiar names (Clooney, McAvoy, Knightley, Cotillard, Bardem, Blanchett, etc.), though there are a few new additions, like Samantha Morton (Control) and Tommy Lee Jones (No Country for Old Men). And apparently the German film The Lives of Others, which took home the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film last year is now eligible for a BAFTA award, and has a good chance of winning one with five nominations.

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to the titles below you can also rent the complete fifth season of Reno 911 as well as the Raven-Symoné comedy (and that's being generous) College Road Trip.

The Bank Job
I wouldn't be surprised if you missed The Bank Job while it was in theaters because it may have been written off as yet another bank heist flick. Now that it's out on DVD I think it deserves your rental/Netflix queue consideration.

Like I said before, it's an entertaining movie that is supposedly based on a true story. It centers around a group of crooks led by Terry Leather (Jason Statham ), who catches wind of a vulnerable vault of safe-deposit boxes. Little does Terry know, however, that the heist will end up having much farther-reaching implications involving several parties with a keen interest in this particular vault. It's not rocket science, sure, but it is a whole lot of fun and smartly directed. I highly recommend you check it out for yourself.

Special features include commentary with director Roger Donaldson, actress Saffron Burrows and composer J. Peter Robinson, and an "Inside The Bank Job" featurette.

Meet Bill
Even though I didn't hear much buzz surrounding Meet Bill originally, I still hoped to see it. But time flies when you're watching everything else, and here it is, already out on DVD. It's possible that we didn't hear much about it for good reason, though I still want to give it a shot because I really like Aaron Eckhart, not to mention Elizabeth Banks.

Netflix sums up the plot as such: "Beleaguered bank employee Bill (Aaron Eckhart) has his hands full with his wife's (Elizabeth Banks) infidelity with a local television reporter (Timothy Olyphant), his oblivious father-in-law (Holmes Osborne) who runs the bank, and his own frustrated attempts to change careers in this screwball comedy. But when he's persuaded to mentor a teenager known as the Kid (Logan Lerman), things just might turn around for Bill."

Penelope
Me? I wasn't in love with Penelope but that isn't to say it doesn't have its charms and depending on the mood your in, could be just the anecdote to all these summertime superhero blockbusters.

The move stars James McAvoy, Reese Witherspoon, and Christina Ricci and tells the fanciful story of a girl cursed with a pig nose. In order to break the curse she must find "one of her own" (i.e. a "blue blood") to love her just as she is and marry her. What follows is a fanciful story that is visually lovely and sometimes touching.

Special features include "The Making of Modern-Day tale" as well as a Twilight sneak peek.

Elizabeth Berkley to Join The L Word

It's been a good year for Saved by the Bell alumni. Mark-Paul Gosselaar's new show, Raising the Bar, begins airing on TNT in September. Mario Lopez has been everywhere from Broadway to MTV. And now Elizabeth Berkley - who's already appeared on CSI: Miami and hosted Step It Up and Dance - is joining the cast of The L Word.

Berkley will come on board for the show's final season, playing a former love interest of Jennifer Beals's character ("the straight girl that got away," according to Entertainment Weekly). No word yet on when she'll show up, but she is going to be around for multiple episodes. This isn't the first time Berkley and Beals have worked together: They also shared screen time in the 2002 film Roger Dodger.

Berkley seems like she should fit right in with the rest of the L Word ladies, and I'm excited to see what she can do with this role. I'm also looking forward to this much more than her other upcoming project, the (potentially ill-advised) Donnie Darko sequel. What say you?

Paris Paid To Wave

After reading this you will just hate her more. Page Six reports, Paris went to Cannes because she made $200,000 to show up and wave at some charity even in Cannes. In fact below is a pic of Paris and friends at at the De Grisogono party in Cannes. Who do you hate more in the picture below?

EVEN Paris Hilton was amazed after she collected $200,000 just for showing up at a charity event in Cannes on Saturday. And FoxNews.com's Roger Friedman reports she was paid $1 million for a similar event in Vienna a few weeks ago. What does she have to do for the money? "All I had to do was wave, like this," she said, imitating Queen Elizabeth II's stately palm swivel. Still, some party snobs try to keep Paris out. She was not invited to the Vanity Fair party at Cannes' Hotel du Cap over the weekend.

It's a good thing VF got wise about not associating with her anymore. We got nervous when they put her on the cover way back when. More pics of Paris doing her very lucrative wave while exiting a yacht and finally making her way back to LA. Too bad they let her in. To see more read more
