Trend Alert: Modern Delftware

I just came across tattoo artist Paul Tillman's Irezumi dinnerware collection (available here), which seems to be inspired by Dutch delftware with traditional Japanese motifs, and am noticing a trend. Delftware, as you may know, is the blue and white pottery and tin-glazed pottery that originated around Delft in the Netherlands in the 16th to 18th centuries. The ceramics had a white glaze that was typically accented with blue floral and pastoral imagery. But these days, the latest trend is to take that signature blue and white palette and kick it up a notch by injecting it with more contemporary motifs, or in some cases, use ceramic delftware to make unusual items - like a computer.

Lovegrove & Repucci's Urban Delft for Areware (available at Unica Home) gives the conservative Dutch pottery a grittier edge by bringing graffiti into the mix.

See five more of these modern delftware designs when you read more.Marcel Wanders's Delft Blue Collection for Mooi reimagines delft in all sorts of peculiar ways, like a traditional vase being blown away, a piggy bank bearing the brunt of a hammer, and those signature petals adorning a submarine.
Dutch design guru Jacob de Baan put the tradition on its head by using asymmetrical and organic shapes and centuries-old trademarks on his Pitcher ($120) for Royal Delft, a company which has been making the blue and white porcelain since 1653.

Studio Ooms brought the art form into the bedroom with The Milkmaid ($180), their ceramic blue delft dildo.

Anthropologie's Caledon Sugar Bowl ($15) and Creamer ($15) uses more sculptural pieces with stamped motifs to give delftware a contemporary edge.

And, Pure*Delft Blue from Plush Department is the first design computer (and a limited edition) with a ceramic casing handpainted in Delft, also produced by Royal Delft.

I personally tend to gravitate towards modern décor, though I ideally like to mix styles. But, as I was raised in a traditional-style home, I do have an appreciation for the sort of old, dusty way of decorating . . . antiques, worn-in wood furniture, classic shapes, reserved colors. Writing Casa, I often catch myself saying that some products would "work well in both traditional and modern homes." While I do believe this is true, there are also many purely traditional products that
are unlikely to be found in a contemporary home. I figured I'd round some of these up for you, using Delftware, a style of blue and white pottery that to me is the epitome of traditional, as inspiration. To see what I've found, read more.

Get the Look: Eddie Ross's Bloomie's Window Display, Part II

Bloomingdale's is hosting a design contest between three interior designers in the windows of its flagship store in NYC, and so in Part I I began to show you how to recreate this gorgeous room designed by Eddie Ross. There are a few more fabulous furnishings needed to get the look, and I've got the lowdown on where you can pick them up. To see them, read more.

The Mirrored Cocktail Table ($459) is from Neiman Marcus. You can pick up a similar lamp with the Fine Home Lamps Bottle Blue Porcelain Lamp ($276) - so gorgeous!

I think the orange artwork is really the pièce de résistance of this space. It pulls all the colors in the room together, and the large scale makes it a focal point on top of all the other smaller patterns. The piece is called Cirsk #1 by artist Campbell Laird, and you can have one printed on paper or canvas in a range of sizes from Artaissance ($119 and up).

The cranberry-colored glasses on the coffee table are from the William Yeoward Crystal Stemware Collection ($142 and up).

Another element of the design is a bookcase filled with blue and white delftware. You can pick some up at Blue Delft!

Love It or Hate It? Black & Spiro Christmas Tree

Anna Spiro created this Christmas window display for her shop, Black & Spiro, in Brisbane, Australia. The display has a blue, white, and pink color palette and uses old Delftware to decorate the tree, as well as silver bowls and pink roses. I think it's a very festive, imaginative design for a window display, but I can't say I'd recreate it in my own home. What do you think?

Steal of the Day: Pottery Barn Kids Modern Plaid Rug

I don't know why I've never checked out Pottery Barn Kids before, considering that I look at PBteen fairly regularly. But I'm not surprised to find adult-worthy designs, like this Pottery Barn Kids Modern Plaid Rug ($89-$399). I'm envisioning it in the traditional living room of a Colonial, with a crave worthy blue velvet chair and some modern Delftware. It would also fit seamlessly into this ravishing red kitchen below the farmhouse table and red Eames Eiffel chairs. Of course, I know at least one of you will say it would be cute for a little boys room . . . but how about in a child-free space? Can you see it now?
