Love It or Hate It? Principessa Daybed

London-based design firm Doshi Levien designed the Principessa Daybed for Moroso. It consists of several thin mattress layers and was inspired by Hans Christian Anderson's tale "The Princess and the Pea." I think it's absolutely charming and clever, and would bring a bit of nostalgic whimsy to any room! What do you think?

How Many Throw Pillows Are on Your Sofa?

I spotted this photo in the portfolio of photographer Catherine Gratwicke and nearly choked at the sight of all those throw pillows! The photograph is a beautiful one (love the natural light!), but seriously, where's a girl supposed to sit? Have you ever seen anything like this? How many throw pillows are on your sofa?Source

A sofa often comprises the largest decorating cost in a living or sitting room. Since it's also a focal point of the room and a high-traffic seating area, it's important not to just snatch up the cheapest thing you can find. Luckily, there are good-looking, even striking, sofas out there that won't cost you an arm and a leg, and that won't give you a backache either.
Take this Macy's Alexandra Sofa ($949, reduced from $1,269). Simple, handsome curves and glamorous upholstery available in sea blue, indigo, or plum make this piece not only versatile, but cheerful and stylish. And it's made of high-density foam cushioning and wire spring seating for ultimate comfort, with a hardwood frame for added durability. On sale, it comes in under $1,000, which is a good investment, but not a bankruptcy-inducing splurge.

The Pier 1 Carmen Sofa ($699, reduced from $999) is a great bargain to begin with. Its two plush cushions and rolled arms make it a comfortable couch, but its nailhead trim and turned wood legs give it polish and glamour. The dusty beige upholstery adapts well to many color palettes, and you can give it a kick of color with a pair of throw pillows.

Steal of the Day: Anthropologie Jayne Sofa

It ain't easy being green with envy. I know this because I'm aching over the Anthropologie Jayne Sofa ($1,499, reduced from $2,998). I love its bold, large lotus stem print and its apple green and black color palette. And Jayne's wacky curves and cute turned wood legs play up the attention-grabbing pattern even more, making her a cheeky living room showstopper - definitely no plain Jayne here. Thankfully, she's on sale, reduced from one of Anthropologie's oft-absurd price points, making it a fair price for a sofa. I must test this one in person though; comfortable lounging is quite important in my book.

This Just In: SF Woman Wins Ugly Couch Contest

After over 10 years of living with her worn, outdated, '70s sofa, four years of determined contest entry, and 6,400 votes in her favor, San Francisco resident Julie Lee has been named the owner of America's ugliest couch, winning a $5,000 living room makeover designed by HGTV's Kim Myles. For the past four years, Lee has entered Sure Fit's Ugly Couch Contest, and now, her effort has paid off.

Lee says:

Here was my chance to finally make my living space more presentable and tasteful. It's time for the couch to go. It's functional, but it really is just so ugly. It’s "loud" and screams of the '70s. It’s orange, yellow, brown and . . . greenish? It has a floral pattern all over. And the fabric is some kind of chenille or velour or something strangely fuzzy.

First things first: Lee will bury her eyesore of a sofa under a Sure Fit slipcover, and then she'll work with Myles to transform her living room with Sure Fit home accessories and other products. And finally, she'll celebrate: Lee's 38th birthday is next week, on Thanksgiving day!

Do You Have a Patterned Sofa?

Patterned sofas had their heyday in the '60s and '70s, and now retailers like Anthropologie are championing them again. Here in the apartment of actress Krysten Ritter, shot by photographer Todd Selby, a vintage sofa mixed with mid-century furnishings and artwork looks of the moment, not dated. But, there's a certain practicality that comes with solid colored sofas, especially considering the prices of reupholstery.Source

Do You Have a Slipcover?

Slipcovers are a pretty great invention for klutzes like myself, who often eat, and frequently spill, on the sofa. They can be balled up and machine washed like a coffee-stained white blouse. But they don't look as polished as an upholstered sofa, and unless you have one specially made, the fabric selection is minimal. Do you have one?Source

Nice and New: West Elm Convertible Sofa

For those of you wondering how to decorate a studio, or just living in a small space, I've always emphasized that dual-purpose furniture is key. A pull-out sofa will accommodate overnight guests and serve as seating during the day. At 66" wide, the West Elm Convertible Sofa ($799) is a great size for a studio. It will fit two people comfortably in front of a coffee table (or storage ottomans!) and unfolds to be used as a bed when needed. It's only available in two colors — light camel or pumice —. But, I think the colors are pretty versatile, especially if you personalize the sofa with your own accent pillows and a throw.

Good, Better, Best: Mid-Century Tufted Sofas

When it comes to rainy Friday nights, there's nothing better than curling up on the sofa with your shoes off. But when it comes to sofas, there's always a good, better, and a best. This go-round, I'm going to take a look at the trifecta of mid-century sofas, tufted, buttoned, clean-lined, and ready to make an appearance in a living room near you.

Good: Quite possibly named after everyone's favorite Mexican beer, the Macy's Corona Sofa ($899) conjures up all sorts of jokes about going South of the border. No, not really. But, it has the clean-lines, button-tufting, and tapered legs of the '60s sofas your parents lounged on while watching Dick van Dyke. The color choices aren't extensive but nothing to complain about either; it's available in pear, café noir, or stone. But, bummer: this three seater's fabric is an acrylic, polyester and nylon blend.

eBay Find of the Day: Family Guy Couch

For those of you who'll take anything that's free (you know who you are), have we got a find for you! Up for grabs and sitting in someone's yard for immediate pickup, the couch above, according to eBay has "been rained on like once or four times, and a couple bunny rabbits have tried to nibble on it, but then were like Whoa this isn't tender chutes this is a Couch, hop hoppity, hoppy-hop."

If the description isn't enough of a sale, the owner notes that this "brownish" sleeper couch looks a lot like the one in Family Guy. Lifestyles of the middle class and animated - who wouldn't want a piece of that? (For the record, this couch looks nothing like the one in Family Guy. See the pic below.)
