When day turns to night, don't add to the fright. This Ecoween leave your car at home and trick-or-treat locally. If you are venturing outside of your neighborhood, lessen your family's carbon footprint by going on foot and pushing babies in their strollers or pulling wee ones too tired to walk in wagons.

The word "locavore" — only eating foods produced within 100 miles of where you live — was nonexistent a few years ago, but has since become a part of mainstream vocabulary, particularly in cities like San Francisco and New York.
But a recent piece by Conservation magazine, entitled "The Problem of What to Eat," questions the status quo of whether buying local really does reduce one's carbon emission. It's obvious that local produce has a lower carbon footprint when compared to air-freighted foods, but it's actually unclear when comparing local foods to those arriving by sea, rail, or road.

I am not a fan of processed foods. Although I am not always successful I do try to avoid food with ingredients that I don't recognize and cannot pronounce.
I now have another motivation to steer clear of packaged, processed and engineered foods – the environment.

Lately the only paper bills that make their way into my mailbox are of the medical kind, because I've been suppressing my paper bills and statements since the option became available and pay them online as well. I love living a mostly paperless lifestyle — not only does it create less clutter on all available surfaces in my apartment, but I know it's doing some environmental good, too.
It surprised me to learn that most Americans still pay their bills by sending a check through the mail, as determined by a 2007 Federal Reserve survey.

Leonardo has finally closed on the eco-friendly Battery Bark Condo that he went to contract to purchase back in April, paying nearly $3.7 million. But, ever the environmental advocate, DiCaprio isn't swooping up energy-hogging properties left and right. He's made room for this purchase in his real estate portfolio and his wallet by putting his 2,374-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath midcentury oceanfront Malibu home on the market for nearly $9 million.

Bottoms up! When it comes time to move baby from breast to bottle, there are a lot of options on the market. When my son was born, I swore by a barely known brand of bottles that quickly gained momentum after the Bisphenol A scare called BornFree.

We know that eating less meat is a good thing — it reduces your carbon footprint, lowers your grocery bill, and makes sense for your heart. But does it taste good? Vegetarian diets are often associated with a bland menu of tofu, sprouts, and brown rice day after day.

In an attempt to reduce my carbon footprint, I've decided to prepare a grilled meal sans meat for my friends this weekend.
At the farmers market, I couldn't resist picking up abundant corn and yellow squash; the two will star in a monterey jack quesadilla that'll brown beautifully over the flame. But unlike any vegetable-filled tortilla I've had in the past, I'm going to keep the vegetables fresh by leaving them uncooked — a time-saver that'll also lend the meal a satisfying crunch.
