Do You Have Wallpaper in Your Bathroom?

The condensation from your showers and baths will eventually cause your wallpaper to peel, if you have it in your bathroom. So, it's a big no-no in my book. That is, unless we're talking powder rooms where you're only running the sink; in that case, I wholeheartedly approve! It's better to get playful with paint, like the stripes I painted in my bathroom. Do you have wallpaper in your bathroom? If so, has it peeled?

Before and After: A Bare Bathroom Goes Modern

Su Casa group member Rvarunnergal recently remodeled her bathroom, which as you can see, had simple builder-grade tiles beforehand. Desire/Acquire: Ruffled Shower Curtain

It was love at first sight when I first set eyes on Anthropologie's Flamenco Shower Curtain ($118). Those cascading ruffles can't help but make a girl's heart go pitter-patter. The same goes for India Rose's Ruffled Shower Curtain ($110). Unfortunately, neither panel is very wallet-friendly - especially considering that shower curtains go for less than $30 at places like Bed Bath & Beyond. Luckily, I've found a ruffled curtain to help you get the look of these beauties for much, much less! Wanna see it?

Before and After: From Red to Striped

At first glance, this red bathroom isn't too bad. When I moved into this place, the powder room wasn't my main priority. Now that I've spent some time here, the red has started to wear on me. Worse are the faux sponge marks on the wall though they are hardly visible in the photo. While I may not use the room that often, my guests do. I've thought about wallpapering the room or doing something traditional and simple. That was all before I checked out the latest issue of Lonny. The Lonny bathroom (to the left) got my creative juices flowing. A small powder room is quaint enough to pull off bold black and white stripes and my black and white marble floor would play perfectly into the new theme. After deciding on my new scheme, I went to work.

First, I taped the baseboards with my standard blue tape. Then I painted the entire room with a primer and then a stark white. Unfortunately, the red base was so strong that I had to apply four coats! Once the white was dry, I marked off my 5-inch stripes with a pencil. Then I used my newest find, Frog Tape, to seal off the edges of the stripes. Worried that the black would bleed into the white, I pressed as hard as I could, especially on the molding, ceiling, and baseboard. When all was dry, I gently pulled the tape away from the wall.

Nervous as I was during the drying process, I was ecstatic with the results. The bleeding was minimal and easily touched up with a small paintbrush. I swapped out the gold mirror; pretty as it may be, it was too big for the small space, and hung my $15 flea market find instead.

Before I finished the job, I had turquoise on my mind and considered painting the frame a bright shade of blue. But after testing out my CB2 Fu Dog Bookends ($50) on the back of the toilet, I may be swayed to go with a hint of red. Really any color would be fun in here - kelly green, bright yellow, or a lacquered purple.

Next on my powder room to do list: decide on color scheme, possibly add a skirt to the sink, and make a curtain for the window. Stay tuned . . .

New DwellStudio Collection Hits Target Stores Today

DwellStudio debuts its latest collection of bed and bath textiles for Target on shelves today. The brand has stuck to its signature bold, large-scale prints in muted gray and brown tones with splashes of yellow, turquoise, and green. This time, embellishments are more prevalent with rosettes, outline quilting, and running stitches taking stage on a range of throw pillows. DwellStudio's still pushing the pale yellow and gray trend which we saw back in 2007, including a decorative floral pillow (left) that was included in a former collection for Target, so parts of it are looking a little dated to me. There is a Moroccan-inspired bedding set, the Casablanca Quilt and Shams, in lime and a soft grayish blue that I am swooning over, though. Prices range from $24.99 for a throw pillow to $79.99 for a king quilt. See the new items below.

Cool Idea: A Vertical Bookcase as Towel Storage

Last month I showed you how I stacked my books like Bruno Rainaldi's Sapien Bookcase without having any bookcase at all! There are many impersonators of the bookcase, CB2's Array Bookcase ($189) being one of them, which I've always thought is just as sharp as the original. And though I've found a way to do without one, now CB2's blog In the Loop is making me think otherwise. The retailer's shown us that the bookcase can be used for much more than just books: it makes great towel storage, too! I think this is a smart idea for renters who can't install more shelves for storage, but do have enough a bit of extra floor space. The towels look tidy rolled up, and you can pull each one down as you need it.

Casa Quickie: Wrap It Up

Photographer Todd Selby recently toured the NYC apartment of music label director Keith Abrahamsson and stylist Kate Young, which is simply too cool for school. Under a backdrop of warm grays, the digs have plenty of high-quality furniture with interesting shapes and artsy elements, but the thing I love the most is that each room has something subtle and creative to notice.

In the bathroom, I thought the couple was so clever to wrap an ugly pipe with rope (or twine) to lend it a more organic, less industrial look. Especially in cities, many of us are plagued with old piping and other things we'd like to hide. So it could be a useful trick for many of you. The material is really versatile and can work with different aesthetics; you needn't just have a nautical theme. What do you think?
