Open House: Flags as Drapery

According to Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8, (d) of the US Flag Code, the American flag, "should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free." But Austin's Hotel St. Cecilia has used Old Glory as drapery on hospital tracking here in a bedroom suite, and I applaud the look. To me, a flag displayed nearly anywhere (so long it's in one piece) looks patriotic. But some of you - and the authors of the code - may disagree. Then again, there are plenty of tiny US codes and laws that I don't follow (oops), so should this one matter? Tell me your thoughts below. Do you approve of this use of the flag as drapery? Have you done something similar in your own home? Or are you against it?

However, sometimes interior designers and patriotic home decorators hang the flag indoors with the best of intentions. Love It or Hate It: Beyonce's Black Lipstick

OMG! I just caught the premier of the new Lady Gaga and Beyonce new Telephone video and it's amazing! There are crazy beauty moments in it. Lady Gaga sports hair in diet coke rollers and, in other scenes, she rocks custard yellow 1940s curly hair with major blue eyeshadow.

Beyonce has winged eyes with bright canary yellow eyeshadow and American flag print nails in one scene. In another, she works jet black lipstick paired with Dita Von Teese style forward rolled bangs. I thought she looked awesome – especially the black lipstick. In fact, they both wear lipstick at different stages in the video. It's not everyone's taste, but is certainly something new. What do you think – style triumph, or dud?

Student Punished for Wearing American Flag Shirt: Right Call?

Students protested by wearing red, white, and blue duds to school after a fellow student was punished for wearing an American flag shirt. The sophomore wore the tee, which featured a tie-dyed flag motif and the words, "United States of America, Washington, DC" on the school's "hippie day," part of their homecoming festivities. The school's assistant principle deemed the shirt a violation of the school's dress code which forbids, "shirts/blouses that promote specific races, cultures, or ethnicities."

For wearing the flag shirt, the student was forced to remove it and wear a bright yellow tee in its place that read, "DCV: Dress Code Violator." His sister said the punishment shirt was pretty traumatic, "It was really embarrassing and humiliating to have to wear that all day - and just for supporting your country." The school has since reversed its decision amid the protest and publicity. The superintendent says that the assistant principle felt it was in violation of the dress code, but they've now changed their interpretation of the clause. He says, "Certainly we are taking responsibility for it and it will not happen again. A shirt that has an American flag, a shirt that has a Chinese flag or a Mexican flag, is certainly not a violation of that part of the dress code." District officials have apologized to the student, and the student body turned out fully clad in red, white, and blue the following day.

Was the administrator right to interpret the clause as she did?

Fab Blab: Geri Halliwell

Geri Halliwell is currently busy promoting her line of children's books across the UK, but she found some time this weekend to talk about her personal style to The Independent. Geri's most famous style moment has to be that infamous Union Jack dress at the Brit Awards in 1997. However, there's one style moment which Ginger Spice isn't so proud of, "I wish I'd never worn an American flag motif swimsuit to the MTV Awards when I was in the Spice Girls. This was me hating myself and hiding under mountains of make-up."

She also spoke about her style icons explaining, "I love women who dress in a ladylike fashion. Victoria Beckham is inspirational with her Audrey Hepburn lines, and Gwen Stefani is never seen without that red lipstick, which I admire." Do you agree with Ms.Halliwell's ladylike muses?

Oh Snap! Marching For Love

Gay rights activists carried a rainbow flag at the US Capitol Building during yesterday's National Equality March. Thousands gathered in Washington DC to push the Obama administration and congress to live up to their promises to advance civil rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans. The demonstrators called for marriage equality and the end to Don't Ask, Don't Tell. On Saturday, President Obama spoke to the nation's largest gay rights organization, renewing his promise to allow gay Americans to openly serve in the military. We'll have to wait and see if the demonstrations urge leaders to fulfill these promises any time soon.
