During a housing shortage in England after World War II, planners turned to prefab to help with the rapidly expanding populace. The Excalibur estates in the town of Catford (located in the borough of Lewisham in greater London) were built to shelter new families temporarily and were only expected to last for 10 years. Now, 60 years later, those houses are still inhabited.

Solara, a new apartment community in San Diego County, California, is the first apartment complex in the country that is completely powered by solar energy. But that's not all—these homes are also affordable, and are built for families that make only moderate incomes.
This project was made possible through a collaboration with the city of Poway, California, Community Housing Works, and Global Green USA.

We rent apartments, cars, and DVDs, but as pop culture continues to influence our lifestyle, even couture is now available to rent. Sure we can't all afford the designer duds cropping up on couture runways from here to Paris, but as the New York Times reports, the recessionistas among us have found another way to get their hands on the coveted — and pricey — merchandise.
Modeled after the "rent-by-web" model, the new site, Rent the Runway, offers clothes from design houses like DvF, Heve Leger, and Catherine Malandrino, to name a few, for anywhere from $50 to $200 dollars for a four-night stay in your very own closet — even dry-cleaning's included in the cost of rental. The only downside, of course, is that fact, that after a couple nights of dancing in your designer number, you'll be forced to pack it up and send it right back.

Falling home prices aren't good news for homeowners who purchased homes during the boom, but the drop could mean affordable buying opportunities. Fifty-five percent of homes sold from April through June were affordable to Americans earning the median household income of $61,500, and prices dropped from $240,000 during the same time last year to $215,000 this year.
The obvious growing affordability of houses in the US hasn't translated into increased sales.

Home has been anything but sweet for owners who have gone through foreclosure or owe more on their mortgages than their homes are now worth. The good news? According to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Opportunity Index numbers released this week, home prices are now the most affordable they've been in at least five years.

The idea of a reform school for girls seems to come straight out of a B-movie from the '50s, complete with stock characters like the naïve innocent, the hardened mean girl with a heart of gold who ends up plotting a way for them both to escape, and an evil warden who gets in their way. It's hard to believe that such a place could still exist.
Until August of this year, the notorious Beloit reform school for girls in Beloit, KS did exist, and the school, founded in the 1890s, only recently shut down because the state could no longer afford to house the remaining 21 girls to the tune of $200,000 a year.

No academic course will teach you how to give a derelict house a gut renovation and turn it into a fantastically unique, high-style home. That skill comes with experience and serious design savvy, something which Robert and Cortney Novogratz accidentally learned they had.
After renovating their first home in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood 10 years ago, which then was a neglected, not-so-fashionable area, they realized they had a knack for building and decorating, together.
