Natalie Portman recently stopped by The Late Show With Dave Letterman and admitted to being homeless. Apparently, after she sold her West Village condo in October, she moved back to her parents' home in Long Island, where she'll camp out until she finds a new place. She said, "I'm a Long Island girl.

Here in San Francisco, a new organization is proposing a movement to cut back on the amount of food waste. Replate.org is asking citizens of the city to leave unwanted food, leftovers, and doggy bags in plain site on top of trash cans, allowing the homeless and hungry access to the food. I think this is a great idea, as it reduces food waste and human hunger, but wonder how the homeless will be educated on the concept.

Why did the Good Samaritan get thrown in the slammer? Because he stole the goods he gave away. Last May, a 22-year-old Birmingham man robbed a bank.

If you need your heart warmed before the weekend, get a load of this wedding story. A Washington DC couple, who started dating nine years ago while they were both living on the streets, just got married in a ceremony organized by the parishioners at Grace Episcopal Church.
Both White, 28, and his new bride, Nhiahni Chestnut, 39, attend Bible studies and a meal program at the church.

A unique homelessness situation confronts post-Katrina New Orleans. A recent survey conducted by advocacy groups shows that a majority of the homeless were residents of New Orleans before the hurricane, and lost their jobs and homes as a result.
Figures cited in today's New York Times include:
- 86 percent of homeless are from the New Orleans area.
- 60 percent cite Hurricane Katrina as the cause of their homelessness, while 30 percent said they received assistance from FEMA at one time.
- 80 percent have at least one physical disability, 58 percent have had some kind of addiction, 40 percent are mentally ill, and 19 percent deal with all three issues.
- The number of homeless has doubled since Katrina, according to rough estimates.

Japan's homeless population dropped to 16,000 down 2,500 from the previous year. Japan continues its downward trend, and the Welfare Ministry thanks better employment prospects in the cities and local governmental policies.
The homeless are overwhelmingly male, with 14,707 men, 531 women, and 780 gender unknown.

Running is truly a metaphor for life. Anne Mahlum, founder of the homeless running program Back on My Feet believes so since there is always another mile to run, and each mile is covered one step at a time.
No stranger to early morning runs, the veteran marathoner Mahlum often found herself being cheered on by the homeless of Philly.
