Gilding, which is defined as covering something thinly with gold leaf or gold paint, can add a glamorous touch to common objects. While the luxurious look of a gilt item may be specious, it's all the while beautiful, and I can't help but want one for myself. Be it a gilt twig bowl or a perfume bottle painted with gold flowers, that metallic shimmer is every bit elegant. Zoe Saldana glistens and glows at the 2010 Oscars. She may have been a blue goddess in Avatar, but here she's letting her natural beauty shine. Dewy skin highlighted with peachy cheeks, pink glossy lips, and plummy bronze-gilded eyes - and we love the simple hairstyle. Is this a win for Zoe, or do you wish she would have gone more dramatic?

Want to be a solid gold hit at the holiday soiree? Do like these gilded ladies and do it up in sparkling, golden-hued gowns. I would like to point out that all three of these starlets are blondes - brunettes and redheads can shine equally as strong. Elizabeth Banks is straight up glam in her Kaufman Franco slit-front gown, Richie went retro in her heavily beaded Reem Acra, and Jessica Biel outshined in a strapless Oscar de la Renta column. I included gilded cocktail options for us, it's more pared down, unless your hot self has a fabulous upcoming red carpet to grace.

Sleek sophistication was the name of the game for Ashanti as she walked the red carpet donning this golden gal look. Sticking to a palette of subtle pinks and gilded shades, the songstress created a very pulled-together vibe. As for Ashanti's typically more-funky-than-polished multitoned locks? She went for something a bit different with this sweeping, sleek chignon. Are you digging her overall style, or would you have liked to have seen her funkier side come through?

Get the Look: Spoon's Transference Album Cover

It's funny to me that Spoon's latest album of understated pop arrives packaged in very overstated décor. The record cover art of Transference, with a boy (a young Britt Daniel?) seemingly trapped in his parents' formal '60s living room, is beyond brilliant. From the excessively animated curtain sheers and draping jacquard valances to the ornate tufted cantaloupe-colored armchair to the oceanic seafoam walls and floors, this style of decorating is just so over the top. Look at the accessories: a gilded glass candy dish, ashtrays galore, a pleated coral lampshade (is that a pineapple lamp base?). Despite the extravagance, I kind of love it - ironically. So I thought I'd try to re-create the look. Of course to get the real thing, you'd have to buy vintage furnishings, but I've done my best. Check it out . . .
