In an effort to educate people about energy-saving tips, the Department of Energy has a new website (Lose Your Excuse) and a couple of new, cute commercials with kids demonstrating the facts, like this one, where the young April gets caught in the old "I don't have a cell phone" lie. Oh, and hopefully you already knew the tip — that keeping your cell phone charger plugged in, even not charging, is using energy.

We've all gotten better about ditching plastic bags and using CFLs, but there are plenty of other simple ways to be "green" and save money that we often overlook. One of these is to make a habit of only running full loads of dishes in your dishwasher and full loads of laundry in your washer and dryer. This is particularly true for your dishwasher, because most dishwashers don't have a "small" option.

So I definitely got the run down on how to recycle from Auntie Litter when I was in grade school, but as Earth Day approaches, it seems that my recycling skills could use a once over. Real Simple has broken the whole recycling thing down by making the ins and outs of recycling really, well, simple.
- Collect newspapers in a paper grocery bag or in tied bundles, depending on your community’s guidelines, and set them out on pickup day.
