Before and After: A Cape Cod Makes Way For Baby

When a family expands, often a just-right-sized home becomes too cramped. This was the case with a family that approached Bowers Design Build, an award-winning firm located in Northern VA, whose work has been featured on HGTV.

The client in this particular case loved the location of their 1920s Cape Cod home, but felt that it was too small. The entire living space was contained on one floor and consisted of cramped rooms, including two bedrooms, a dining and living room, one small bath, and a galley kitchen. While there was an attic space, it was unconditioned and only used for storage.

The firm decided to build the addition so the entire first floor only was used for living space, with a small rear addition to expand the kitchen. Meanwhile, by building up, the lot's yard size could be preserved, and a second story could be used for bedrooms.

The new design's facade preserves the look of the Cape Cod from the front, while expanding the home's size in the back. Additions such as a mudroom allow for tidiness, even in the face of a child's dirty boots. Additional storage was added, and the laundry facility was added to the second story, to make this task much easier, given their new baby.

Before and After: A Cape Cod Crib in Connecticut

This Old House recently featured the home of a Fairfield, CT, family who drastically transformed their 1953 Cape Cod home after enduring serious renovations, including raising the roof to add four bedrooms and two baths upstairs. Shown here is the former living room, with busy, antiquated wallpaper and worn oak floors that certainly don't help to make the space feel larger. With a little paint, some floor stain, an overhaul of the fireplace, and a lot of DIY demolition, the Kuryluk family transformed the room into an airy, modern space that's up-to-date and stylish. Taste Test: Cape Cod Popcorn

I'm a huge snacker, and admittedly have more than a few downfalls. One of them is popcorn. Combine this with a shipment we recently received of new popcorn from Cape Cod Chips, and you can guess where the story is headed.

Cape Cod is known for its all-natural potato chips, which come in a wide variety of flavors (my favorite is the jalapeño and aged cheddar - especially as a hangover snack). Now, the brand has added three kinds of popcorn flavored with all-natural ingredients to that list: white cheddar, sweet cream butter, and sweet and salty (all $2.69). The scents were inspired by the charming homes, laid back atmosphere, sand dunes, evening picnics and the rolling blue Atlantic Ocean of Cape Cod Massachusetts. There are two fragrances in this collection; one for men and one for women, which are expected to hit stores in April.

Escape to Cape Cod For Him is made from sea air accord, wild bergamot, juicy mandarin, spearmint leaves, seaweed, lavender and salty sea driftwood.

Escape to Cape Cod For Her is made from Nantucket cranberry, strawberry rhubarb, lemon-lime spritzer, beach roses, magnolia, indigenous Cape Cod wildflowers and cedar. Imagine wearing this fresh scent on sun soaked, sandy and salty sea skin! Mmmm.

The fragrances will only be sold in sets. The Anchors Away Summer Set for Men includes a 3.4 oz Cologne and a 3.4 oz Body Wash and comes in a cute nautical-inspired navy blue drawstring tote and retails for $45. The Seaside Breeze Set for Women, includes a 3.4 oz bottle of the Perfume and a 3.4 oz Body Lotion which comes in a red nautical-inspired drawstring tote and sells for $48. Enjoy!

Before and After: Cottage Kitchen

Su Casa group member Rvarunnergal recently remodeled the kitchen of her 1940s Cape Cod home (as well as her bathroom). This photo shows what the room looked like when she purchased her home, and she says since then they've updated everything except the kitchen cabinets, which were pretty classic to begin with. Their newest addition is a backsplash made of recycled glass.
She says, "My absolute favorite part of this kitchen is the cork floors. Great on the feet!"

House Tour: Anne and Aaron's Minneapolis Home

Anne, Aaron, and their daughter, Iris, share their Minneapolis Cape Cod-style home with their dog, Jasper, and cat, Boxcar. The family's two-bedroom, two-bathroom home is compact but nicely sized, and they've lived there for just over five years.

Anne reports, "We've updated the house quite a bit. We installed a new boiler and water heater, replaced some of the old plumbing, repainted the outside and remodeled the kitchen. The kitchen was obviously the biggest project. I love the results, but it was so much work (and money!). I really learned a lot though."

When asked about their decorating style, Anne notes, "I don't know that I'd really say we have a distinct decorating style. We like mid-century stuff quite a bit and tend to shy away from ornate/fussy furniture. I love thrifting and try to make sure every room is a good balance of new and old stuff. With a toddler in the house, there are toys everywhere now, so dealing with that is a challenge!" I really admire a family that's able to balance their sense of style with a comfortable, functional, and kid-friendly home. See how Anne and Aaron achieve this balance in the slideshow!

Cool Idea: Everything in One Hue

Melanie, of the fabulous Etsy shop Plum Cushion, lives in a seriously stylish 1941 Cape Cod in Seattle. The bones of her home are nice, but it's her cool palette and ability to modernize vintage pieces that really make it hip. One of my favorite elements was how she painted her Rococo sconces and mirror and her Chinoiserie console table to match the blue of her walls. Obviously, each piece has an ornate shape that could really stand out if painted in a contrasting color. But they're all so shapely, it would be too busy and competitive if that were the case. Painted to match the walls, her accessories pop and make you give the quaint corner a second look.
