Advice sought to perk up boring apartment

I am looking for advice to decorate my apartment. I love the great pulled together looks on this site but I just don't have the confidence to put something together myself. Please help me! It's reached the point where I am embarrassed to have people over to my lackluster apartment.

At the moment, I have somewhat of a global theme going on. I have used mostly neutral colors with pops of red. I have been looking for a rug for ages but can't choose one. I like the look of lots of fun pillows but I'm always afraid that any I select will clash. I am completely open to any ideas. I love the way splashes of color look - rather it's a turquoise vase or a sapphire velvet chair. Not that I have any of these - just looks I like.

A few parameters - I can't paint my walls and I don't have a ton of money. I am open to any other ideas - just help me make my apartment look like a grown up with some style lives here. Thank you so much for your help!

My First CA Earthquake!

I've been out here for two years and never felt a thing...until about 10 minutes ago when I was stretching out on the futon to show my boyfriend a picture in my magazine and I heard the windows rumble, like thunder. I thought I felt the futon move, but before I could react it was over. Our first instinct was to go on the internets, which told us that it was 15 miles northwest of us and a 4.5.

Yikes! I hope everyone is okay!

Cabin Curtains

We recently updated our family's 60+ year old cabin, and needed curtains for two windows in one of the bedrooms. I offered to make them. I do not have much sewing experience, but figured that I can hem the edges of rectangles, right?
My mom and I picked out a cream canvas fabric with green stripes. It seemed cabin-y, and the colors went with the room.

This was the one time I was grateful that my bf insists on keeping his humongous eyesore of a futon in our living room. It provided a great work space.

Measuring was particularly challenging as I had bought remnant fabric and there was nothing to spare (no room for error).
You'd think with my bf being an architect we'd have some great measuring tools around, but he keeps al the good stuff at work. I was stuck with a measuring tape and large sketch pad to do the trick.

I had to deal with orange magic marker on part of my "as is" remnant fabric, and that became the back of the top tab for one of the panels.

Then I had my three completed panels. Yay!

I hung some in my apartment just to see what they looked like put up. They will look better in the green bedroom at my cabin with appropriately-sized windows.

The R. Kelly child pornography trial just gets weirder and weirder. And a good deal of it is downright disgusting. In testimony yesterday, the prosecution’s star witness (and three-way sex tape participator) Lisa Van Allen said Kelly carried around a duffel bag filled with his homemade sex tapes. She said wherever Kelly went, the bag went. Not necessarily for safekeeping, but for easy access. Van Allen had a relationship with Kelly from early 1998 to 2001.

R&B superstar R. Kelly carried a duffel bag filled with homemade sex videotapes wherever he went, a woman testified Monday. While making one such tape, Kelly cut off the filming when the woman - Lisa Van Allen - started crying during three-way sex with an underage girl, Van Allen testified.

“He got upset and said he couldn’t watch that. He couldn’t do anything with that, with me crying. He stopped the camera,” Van Allen said. The tapes Kelly liked went with him to his recording studio, to his favorite basketball gym - Hoops on the near West Side - and to video shoots, she said.

“Wherever he was at, the [duffel] bag would follow,” Van Allen said.

Van Allen also described her relationship with Kelly and how many times they made sex tapes.

Van Allen’s testimony - covering her relationship with Kelly and how she ultimately became a witness against him - came under fierce attack by the defense, which contended she wanted money from Kelly. After Van Allen spent most of the day on the stand, the prosecution rested.

Van Allen said Kelly told her the girl was 16, though prosecutors contend she was as young as 13. Van Allen testified that Kelly videotaped the threesome - a tape separate from the one at the heart of the current case.

A year later, the trio had sex again - this time on Kelly’s indoor basketball court, she testified. Van Allen wept as she described how Kelly put a futon mattress on the court. It was during that three-way encounter that she cried, Van Allen said, prompting Kelly to stop the videotaping.

The three had sex again in 2000 inside Kelly’s trailer at a video shoot in Chicago, Van Allen said.

Van Allen was 18 at the time she made the first sex tape with R. Kelly, which the prosecution points out makes the other girl in the video 14 at the time. Which is utterly disgusting. The defense managed to paint Van Allen as a thief and a liar – getting her to admit that she stole a Rolex from Kelly. They’ve also managed to really cloud the prosecution’s case in terms of the identity of the man on the tape, who they claim is not R. Kelly and was digitally manipulated to look like him. Unfortunately for the defense, an F.B.I. expert testified that the tape had not been digitally altered.

The prosecution rested today, and did a good job, given their resources. The defense’s whole strategy is to muddy the waters, blame the victim, and give ridiculous explanations – basically do anything and everything, no matter how extreme, to get Kelly off. It seems pretty clear to most people following the case that he’s guilty as sin – but if I were the betting type, I’d still put all my money on R. Kelly getting off.

Revamped Charity Shop Dining Table and Chairs

It was a total switch, selling away my Victorian antiques and rich accessories used in my old home in Scotland to move to Finland, and an ultra-modern, ultra-white flat flooded with light.

I decided to go from "very serious business" furniture to something that felt light, fresh and fun.

With a very tight budget in these first months after the cost of moving, I have had to be creative with what I kept and what I can afford to buy. Having given up my search for a new white, round wooden table, I happened across an old off-white table and chairs with some dingy green seats at a local charity shop, and best of all it was solid wood, no MDF or plywood.

This room is still in progress but basically I painted the set pure white, satin finish, recovered the chairs in black canvas fabric and topped them with red cushions to give them a "mini futon" effect. A Venetian mirror that once hung in my former home's bathroom finds new life as an accessory.

The white ceramic and black metal double-decker "dentist's stand" came with me from the USA many years ago and has worked in bathrooms, kitchens and countless spots since, and now holds candles, photos and an another mirror, a small Victorian decorative mirror I had kept from Scotland, and simple black and red accessories top the table.

Completing the look are white panel curtains and a funky fun red chandelier that I found on sale.

All I lack now is to get something besides clothespins (cough) to hold up the curtains on the far window, since a shelf keeps them from being fully extended...I may paint them but I think the more fun solution is if I can find some funky black or red rhinestone clip earrings..I would need two pairs, so that may be a wee challenge.

And finally I may or may not look for a circular rug to go beneath it..I still feel the room lacks something but if its the rug or some more colour on the walls I am not quite sure.

So anyway, former antique freak rescues some old-school Scandinavian furniture and goes for a bit of modern humour. Its a very bright, fun place to eat, but also looks lovely in the evening when the sun drops.

1. Think outside the recycling box. It's simple: These days you can recycle a lot more than paper, glass, aluminum and plastic. Even better: Reuse stuff--less energy is wasted on making it new, and less pollution gets spewed out. Also check out freecycle.org, a network in which people offer up free gently used items--futons, quesadilla makers, you name it.

2. Sign up for online banking. It saves you time, and it saves trees. If every American did this, 2.3 million tons of wood could be spared annually, and 3.9 billion pounds of greenhouse gases (directly to blame for heating up the planet) would be eliminated. When you visit an ATM, skip the receipt--those scraps of paper are a top source of litter.

3. Shop online, too. By some estimates, every minute spent driving to a store uses 10 times the energy of doing that same shopping on the Web. For eco-driven sites so good you'll never miss the mall, visit nau.com and thegreenloop.com for fashion, and econsciousmarket.com for home finds.

4. Buy local, whenever possible. Purchasing a sweater made by a neighborhood knitter and baked treats from farmers' markets instead of buying goods from far-off locales drastically reduces pollution and fuel use.

5. Switch to green power. You don't have to build a windmill in your backyard or anything. Just find an energy company that uses good old wind, sun or water (but not from a big dam) for power. Visit eere.energy.gov/greenpower to find a local supplier.

Couch Burning: An IV Tradition

I have talked about the infamous tradition of Isla Vista Couch Burning. Today in our school paper they had an article about the recent efforts to extinuish this sort of rite of passage for graduates

"As the school year winds down, it seems as though university and county officials can already detect the scent of burnt upholstery in the air.

Last summer, the county government passed an ordinance to try and stop the “tradition.” This spring, foot patrol officers will be wandering the streets - out of uniform - to try and catch perpetrators in the act. And even though the fires burn off campus, the university is ready to discipline anyone caught setting the blaze.

Between worrying about the environmental effects and threatening anyone who participates in the act, community and county officials are all fretting over Isla Vista’s favorite spring-time activity: couch burning.

To try and douse the fires before they start, UCSB and the Isla Vista Foot Patrol are already reminding students that igniting unwanted furniture will also burn a large hole in the perpetrators’ pockets. The bottom line, IVFP Lt. Sol Linver said, is that couch burners will be held accountable.

“Because it has turned into such a problem, the district attorney’s office agreed that there will be no pleading,” Linver said. “There will be maximum fines.”

According to Linver, the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s office was prompted to increase the penalties for couch burning and deny all pleas involving the fires last year when 18 people - nine of them UCSB students - were arrested for burning couches. In total, 31 couches were burned last season. The new consequences include a maximum $1,000 fine, up to 100 hours of community service and three to six months in county jail.

To try and catch perpetrators in the act, Linver said undercover foot patrol officers will be used to monitor couch burning this year, and anyone starting the fire or adding to it will be arrested.

“The least consequence is getting caught,” Linver said. “The most serious consequence is that a fire gets out of control and catches a house or car on fire and causes serious property damage.”

Although the black marks that litter the streets of I.V. are scorched into the pavement year-round, couch burning is an I.V. spring rite of sorts. There is no single reason to explain the increase in futon fires during spring, but perhaps the prospect of moving out in mere weeks may make the typical I.V. resident’s filthy couches seem a little more dispensable.

To try and combat the problem, last summer the county passed the “Fluffy Couch Ordinance.” According to Linver, the ordinance is not directly related to couch burning, but makes it illegal for any “indoor” furniture to be left outdoors. At the time, county supervisors said they were trying to remove the kindling for the fires, and thereby keep firefighters from wasting their time and taxpayer dollars.

“Couch burning ties up a fire engine and company,” Third District Supervisor Brooks Firestone said. “It also messes up the roads for bikers and skateboarders.”

Firestone, whose constituency includes I.V., said he voted on the ordinance to try and keep students from making a costly mistake.

“Someone could have some lark and wind up in court,” Firestone said. “It’s infinitely dumb.”

The university is also in on the act, and UCSB students are subject to university discipline, Deborah Fleming, associate dean of students, said.

“There’s a catch-all clause at UCSB,” Fleming said. “Students engaging in activities affecting safety of community are taken into extended jurisdiction.”

According to Fleming, the university’s consequences vary depending on the case, but UCSB has prosecuted several students for couch burning.

Students themselves have also taken action against the environmental consequences of couch burning. Environmental Affairs Board Co-chair Ryan Andersen said EAB discourages couch burning because of its effect on the environment and the toxins it releases.

“Couches are made of plastics and when plastics burn they’re bad for the atmosphere,” Andersen said. “We live in a very ecologically sensitive area since we’re less than a mile from the ocean. When you’re burning couches you do have the potential for embers and debris to go into the ocean.”

Expanding upon the normal official reasons not to burn couches, Firestone said the consequences do not stop at legal penalties or environmental degradation. To demonstrate, he created a list of the “top ten” reasons not to burn couches. Firestone’s top ten includes the following: the fact that couch burning is not cool, and that setting furniture ablaze does not necessarily impress the hot partiers watching."
