This week’s artist of the week is René François-Ghislain Magritte (usually simply called René Magritte). Born in Belgium on November 21, 1898, Young Magritte suffered tragedy early when his mother committed suicide. She threw herself into the River Sambre on March 12, 1912.

Tom Cruise’s partner, Paula Wagner, has stepped down from her role as CEO of United Artists. Wagner has known Cruise for decades. She was his agent at CAA and helped him pair with Oliver Stone for 1993’s Born on The Fourth of July.

Paul Signac was born on November 11th, 1863 into an affluent Paris family. In his youth, Signac wanted to be an architect, but in 1880 abandoned that path for a career in painting. He was influenced, early on, by Claude Monet and the Impressionist movement.

Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1652/1653), is a painter, and the daughter of well-known Roman artist, Orazio Gentileschi (1563-1639), and was one of the first women artists to achieve recognition in the male-dominated world of post-Renaissance art. In an era when female artists were limited to portrait painting and imitative poses, she was the first woman to paint major historical and religious scenarios.
Born in Rome in 1593, she received her early training from her father.

Statue of Giotto di Bondone, close to the Uffizi, Italy.
Very little is actually known about Giotto’s life. He’s considered the father of western painting, the first in a long line of artists that set the Renaissance rolling.

If you can't find the time to get to your local art museums, now you can conveniently bring the art to you and your desktop with a cool website called Artist a Day. So maybe it's not the same as the transcending experience you'd get cruising around the Met, but it does showcase a new artist each day and brings attention to various artists whose work may have gone unnoticed otherwise.
When you like artists' works, you can leave comments or continue on to their personal websites to see more of their creations.
