Each year on her birthday, Ann Hernandez and her boyfriend, Alan Tomaska, would settle on the rocky shore of Thacher Island and uncork a bottle of champagne in a toast to the day. When the bottle was empty and the tide going out, Hernandez would tuck a handwritten message inside and Tomaska would hurl the bottle over the rocks and into the crashing surf.
Tomaska considered the ritual a lark.

Mark Steyn: Stimulus hits a pothole

Leaving Michigan Behind: Eight-year population exodus staggers state
Outflow of skilled, educated workers crimps Michigan's recovery
Ron French and Mike Wilkinson / The Detroit News
Joe LaCross drives American cars. Always has. Born and raised in the blue-collar suburbs of Detroit, this son of a welder wouldn't dream of rolling past his autoworker neighbors in a Toyota.

EVER since Mary Todd Lincoln overshot the White House decorating budget by $6,700 (a third of her $20,000 appropriation), infuriating her husband and delighting a press corps that had already turned against her, the redecoration of the president’s house has been a public relations minefield. Some new administrations tiptoe through it unscathed; others are less nimble, and bombs explode.
“It’s an old maxim that you can build a billion-dollar highway that’s the biggest pork barrel in the world and no one will say anything,” said William Seale, a White House historian, “but if you’re in public office and you try and change your desk, you’re going to end up on the front page.

Top Five Priciest Restaurants
Masa, New York City
Alinea, Chicago
Canlis, Seattle
Joel Robuchon at the Mansion, Las Vegas
Urasawa, Los Angeles
As the restaurant critic for The Seattle Times, Nancy Leson knows her way around the coastal city's restaurant scene. When it was time to treat her husband on his birthday, she took him to Canlis the city's most expensive a la carte restaurant.
For once, the meal was entirely on her dime “and it was worth every penny of it,” she says.

I decided that over Christmas that I would "adopt" a new fruit and vegetable that I haven't eaten much of, find one I liked and incorporate into my weekly diet.
These two little stars are low-calorie, packed with vitamins and flavour, and are (like most produce) not that expensive if you keep your eyes sharp.
Soo without further adieu:
The veggie is definitely celeriac (Inspired by the need to make a last-minute substitution to Christmas dinner...ending up in a "celeriac" gravy and dressing addition that worked out so awesomely..damn this stuff is good!

My doctor wanted to see me every two weeks in the last months. Now I felt infinitely tired, the waking moments I had during the nights, wished they had been during day ;) she had no more space there – she was lying there like a stone in my belly and was hurting the days and nights away. Yet all women, who had been pregnant, went through this.
