US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice knows how to spend time with VIPs such as Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos: she does so in the comfort of a wingback chair.
Wingback, or wing chairs, are high-backed, upholstered easy chairs whose panels, or "wings," project forward from the sides of the back and curve downward to meet the roll arms. Originally, the wings were designed to block drafts in old homes, and to protect ladies' skin from a fireplace's heat. (Considering this last point, it's perfect that Condi's chair is parked next to a fireplace.)

Love It or Hate It? Jardin Chair

Things I love about the Jardin Chair ($799): It's made from sustainably harvested wood and uses plant-based eco foam. It's roomy enough for two. Its armless silhouette and wing back will make it a versatile addition to most any room.

Thing I don't love about the Jardin Chair: It looks like it would be more comfortable in Pee-wee's Playhouse than in my casa.

Love It or Hate It? Zero Gravity Wing Chair

Do You Have a Designated Reading Nook in Your Home?

Photographer Todd Selby recently shot the home of Stefano Tonchi, the editor of The New York Times's style glossy T Magazine, and I am completely envious of the little reading nook in his living room. With two big wing chairs and a small side table beside jam-packed, floor-to-ceiling, built-in bookshelves, it's the ideal place to cozy up with a good read. And, it doesn't hurt that he has fabulous contemporary artwork to stir his mind. I don't have a designated place like this to read in my home; I tend to float from the bedroom to the living room to my deck. I sure wouldn't mind it, though.

Crave Worthy: Deadgood Love Chair

Every home has gotta have a heart, including my own. But, I'm keen on integrating the lovey motifs in a quiet fashion. That's why I adore the Deadgood Love Chair (inquire for price). Its subtle heart-shaped button detailing is absolutely charming and unexpectedly tongue-in-cheek. I'd love to see these buttons used on tufted upholstery, as well as other shapes. Beyond that, the shape of the chair itself is gorgeous - a bit of a cross between a wing chair and a dining armchair. Swoon. Are you in love, too?

Coveted Crib: Calm and Restrained in London

Decorating is not like getting dressed. While buying all the clothes you love will result in a beautiful wardrobe, you must execute restraint when shopping for your home - otherwise your digs will be an uncohesive headache. But that doesn't mean you have to live in a white box or be super matchy matchy. The owners of this beautiful London home know what I'm talking about. They've chosen a calm, mostly neutral palette with touches of soft color and pattern. There's no more than one element that stands out in each room - a modern blue-wing chair in the living room, a wall of patterned wallpaper in the bedroom - which allows your eyes to rest. Beyond that, the home is accessorized but not overly so. There's no clutter or too many items competing for your attention in one place. Just looking at it, I feel calm. Crave Worthy: Sunflower Zebra Chair

While I do think the zebra trend is pretty played out at this point, and I'm certainly not keen on animal hide rugs, I find myself pleasantly surprised by the Horchow Sunflower Zebra Chair ($2,199). Not only does the winged accent chair look super comfortable and have great lines, but it's incredibly cheerful in its sunny zebra pattern. And you know how I love nailhead trim. Despite the bold pattern, the chair integrates well with more traditional pieces, such as the Persian rug shown here. But, it would also really be the center of attention in a minimal, modern interior. You like?

Chairs That Became Art

Earlier this year, I went to an exhibit at Johansson Projects called Excavations. This gallery show featured an exhibition of landscapes that attempted to blur the typical boundaries between nature and artifice. Eight artists participated in the show, including artist Yvette Molina, and displayed everything from nature-based paintings to ceramic branches that sprouted out of walls. One of the pieces I was most drawn to though was Scott Oliver's "The Valley," a piece made from a chair (I suppose this shouldn't be a surprise, given my interior-design obsession).

Scott found an overstuffed chair at a garbage dump, and deconstructed it into a wall sculpture of Hetch Hetchy. Using just the stuffing, threading, and other innards of the chair, the artist formed trees, cliffs, and hillsides.

"Portrait of George" by artist Elyse Hochstadt was another favorite of mine from this exhibit. The formal armchair was completely reupholstered with black feathers, and one large wing is draped against the chair's side. Apparently I wasn't the only one who loved the piece: I more recently spotted the chair at Oakland's uber-hip design studio/gallery/store FiveTen Studios.

What's your take on these reimagined chairs? I find them inspiring, but I'd love to hear what you think, too.
