West Elm's Spring 2012 collection is almost here, but for those who can't wait, I've rounded up my top picks for the new season! Hitting stores and ecommerce during the first week of January, the new Spring collection is filled with vibrant colors, ethnic textiles, classic prints, and beautiful ceramics. New collaborations, such as an exclusive line of eco-friendly, nonstick pots and pans made by GreenPan, more indoor gardening vessels from Shane Powers, prints from PATCH NYC, stoneware from DBO Home, and ceramics from Stephen Antonson, will be introduced as well.

Are You Reading West Elm's New Blog, Front & Main?

While plenty of home decorating inspiration abounds online, I have another essential reading choice to add to your RSS feed. Front & Main, West Elm's new blog, is full of great information and ideas, including features on artists, favorite, inspirational homes, and of course, quite a few posts that explore how West Elm products are being utilized in real-life homes.

This gorgeous Upper West Side bedroom belongs to HGTV star Sabrina Soto. The entire bed is just a knockout, and the headboard is West Elm's king-sized Diamond Tufted Headboard, in otter performance velvet.

And here's where Front & Main excels: instead of simply plugging one of West Elm's products, the blog explains why this look works in the bedroom, citing the texture contrasts between the velvet headboard and cotton duvet, as well as the way the color palette works together. While West Elm's blog could potentially fall into product placement jeopardy, it instead rises to the challenge of informing its readers about topics they really care about and appreciate - as well as giving them some lovely West Elm eye candy, too.

Stock up on markdowns with West Elm's Summer Sale. I've pulled a few of my favorites from the sale, but this is only a tiny peek at the array of items on sale. From bedroom furniture to tabletop items to decorating accents, you're sure to find a favorite.

Besides my picks above, make sure to check out some exclusives, such as Lourdes Sanchez's line for West Elm. I'm smitten with her Zebra Fish Pillow (originally $34, on sale for $25). I'm also loving the Upholstered Dhurrie Slab (originally $300, on sale for $250). It's made from solid wood with a handcrafted wool dhurrie in neutral colors patchworked over the frame. It would be a fab alternative to a coffee table or a great low seating option for a living room or bedroom.

Tell a Whale of Tale in Your Living Room

Whales, the gentle giants of the sea, are an au courant decorating motif, but these sweet sea creatures weren't always used in a benign manner when it came to home decorating. Starting in the mid-1700s, whalers would use whale bones, teeth, and baleen to create scrimshaw - engraved pictures and lettering etched into these animal parts.

Thankfully, scrimshaw is in no danger of becoming trendy again. Homages to the great whale, however, can be seen silk-screened on pillows, shaped into mobiles, or taking the form of furniture and accents. Get excited for Summer days on the coast with some whale additions to your home. I'm particularly loving this Whales Pillow ($34) created by artist and textile designer Lourdes Sánchez for West Elm. West Elm just shared some sneak peeks with me of its Summer 2011 collections, which include outdoor furniture, a new kitchen collection, and designer collections from David Stark and Lourdes Sánchez, which will all be available online and in-store later this week. Julia also took you through some of the offerings from Stray Dog for West Elm last week. Next up is the Dexter Collection, which I'm in absolute love with. This driftwood-inspired dining collection features loungers and side tables made of FSC-certified Meranti and Indonesian hardwood - I am especially coveting the Meranti bench.
