Craft of the Day: DIY Pop Art

I'm excited to present a post from one of my favorite sites, Stylelist Home.

Pop Art is bold, eye-catching and easy to create on a budget. All you need for this project is white poster-board, different color paints, thin painter's tape, circular objects and a pencil.
To begin, use the painter's tape to outline the rectangles in the bottom portion of the poster. Then, using different circular forms, such as cups, a CD and a bottle cap, outline the rows of circles in the top half with a pencil - if you are not a confident painter, you can tape these outlines too. Next, apply the paint. We like the juxtaposition of the bright orange against the deep plum, but use whichever colors match your home. Finally, let the paint dry, peel the tape off and frame it. The finished painting will look great hanging anywhere in your home, but would also make a fun homemade gift for the holidays.

The Canvas: A Lifetime Project

I thought I would share the newest cities my husband and I have added to our stenciled canvas wall art. It's all the cities we've been to together that mean so much to us. (We didn't include the ones we've been to solo, no matter how exciting they were).

A little cheesy and corny I know, but most artwork this big is in the $2000s. I can just imagine us getting older adding more and more (the letters will get smaller and smaller or we'll make two or three more . . . we plan to travel much people!) and the memories of those places so vivid, it would feel like we were there yesterday. Sorry, I'm going all The Notebook here. We even stenciled the cities in together of course, me commenting on how crooked he made some of the letters. Or maybe that was me who did it?

Adding Art to Our Bare Walls

For the first year we lived in our house, we had absolutely nothing hanging on the walls. I'm not much of a home decorator. It took an observation from marketman to make me realize that our walls were bare. Nude. Au naturale. I thought this could be my opportunity to get back into painting, so I proceeded to drop about $300 on art supplies - oil paints, an easel, solvents, canvases, palettes, brushes, and other assorted tools - which have since gone unused. I should have realized that I haven't touched paints since high school and that the mental hurdle of putting brush to canvas might be too great.

But slowly but surely, we have made a few changes. Thanks to his grandmother, we now have a lovely still life in the downstairs hallway (she is quite the artist), and we spent half of a Sunday framing a bunch of photos to create our own photo mosaic in the TV room. And despite our ugly sectional couch in the living room, we managed to spruce up the space with an obi we bought in Tokyo last year . . . and - oh yeah - the piano that marketman's parents generously provided as our housewarming present!

I think our crowning achievement is the "vintage" canvas bus roll we created with all of the places at which he and I (or he or I) have lived. I had to cut out a few of his early years (New Haven, Cambridge, Seoul, Daejeon) because there just wasn't enough space. So we stuck to the more significant locales for us as a twosome, and I found a cool font called Roadway that gave it that old bus station look while he used his knowledge of layers and effects to give it an aged feel before having it printed and stretched by Canvaspop.
