Gift Guide: Hip Wall Décor for Kids

Growing up I was always interested in decorating, but I had a fleeting sense of style that changed as frequently as my taste in food. My parents let me choose my décor, which I loved. But in retrospect, I wish they would have given me more guidance; I often regretted my decorating choices when I came across something better. In light of all of this, I thought I'd round up some of what I consider hip wall décor for kids. Guess Who Designed This Wall Art?

I spotted this image in the portfolio of New Zealand-based photographer Emily Andrews and I love the way the silvery grays of the wall art play off of the rich patina of the industrial chairs. And the gray cat, too! The wall art is made from stretched fabric by a very famous textile company. Can you name the company?

Casa Quickie: Think Outside the Frame

This boho-chic 19th-century frame, which was recently featured in Skona Hem magazine, has a number of quirky features. One of my favorite quirks is this wall of small sculptures hung high on the wall in the dining room. If you're feeling uninspired by your framed photos and artwork, try adding some textural elements to your wall in the form of small sculptural objects, or even plates. It can add new zest to a ho-hum wall display.

Beautiful, graphic plates can look just as stunning as an expensive painting when they're displayed well. Check out some of my favorite plate displays, as well as tips on getting the look.

DIY: A Fab Photo Wall

I love this instant-art idea, used in one of the Superior Deluxe Rooms at the Portland Ace Hotel. It also seems like it's begging to be DIYed.

You can re-create this look by measuring your wall, and then selecting white matting for each photo, and mounting the matted photos along your wall. Or, you can simply use a découpaging technique to fasten the photos to your wall directly. See how to do the latter below.

Measure your wall, and then estimate the number of photos you want to use for each row. Space the photos evenly. You may want to cut out pieces of paper that are the same size as your photos, and then gently tape them to the wall. Experiment until you have the dimensions and spacing that you like the best.
Lightly pencil in the space where each photo should be. Use a ruler, measuring tape, and level to make sure the photos are even.
Lay down a drop cloth or newspaper on the floor below the wall you're covering.
Open up your windows, and make sure the room is well ventilated.
Using a sponge brush, apply wheat paste to a small portion of the wall.
Now, line up the first photo, and apply it, burnishing out any bubbles with your hands as you press it onto the wall.
Continue to apply wheat paste and press your photos onto the wall, lining them up neatly until the wall is covered.
Make sure you've burnished out any bubbles. Sometimes using a credit card here will help.
Now, allow the wall to dry.
Using a synthetic bristle brush, apply a coat of Polycrylic Protective Finish, which will protect the pages from peeling, scuffing, and other damage.
If your adjacent walls get messy from applying the Polycrylic, you can easily clean it up with a sponge and some warm, soapy water.

Cool Idea: A Bright and Fantastic DIY Wall

Alexa, the creative presence behind the blog The Swell Life, recently transformed a wall in her apartment from a boring off-white shade to this eye-catching grid of color. The project is renter-friendly, and it cost her less than $20. Plus, most importantly, it looks utterly fantastic.

Alexa explains, "Like a lot of people, I live in an apartment. The type of apartment complex that doesn't allow painting of any kind. I really try to jazz up the blah eggshell walls with color, whether it be colorful artwork or colored lampshades that cast a hue on the wall. Well, I wanted to step it up a notch with my décor beyond that and do something totally different with my bedroom wall that would make visitors come in and say, 'Wow! You did that?'"
