Casa Shops: W Hotel Online Store

Thanks to FabSugar, I know that the W Hotel now as an online store. Their home section doesn't have the largest selection yet, and may be a bit pricey, but I'm hoping one day soon they'll offer all the unique, trendy home items you can find in their boutiques. Home Away From Home: Chandelier Creative

Chandelier Creative is a three-year-old, full-service creative agency based in New York City with a focus on fashion, beauty, retail, travel, and luxury lifestyle brands. Among Chandelier's clients are Coca Cola, Four Seasons, Parfums Givenchy, Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Old Navy, Nanette Lepore, and W Hotels. Though the agency's client list is certainly an impressive one, you know me: I find myself more taken with the interior design of its SoHo penthouse, designed by agency owner, Richard Christiansen. Much like its work, Chandelier's space is slick, colorful, and imaginative and in every sense far from what the word "office" conjures in even the most forward-thinking mind. Here, a black leather Chesterfield sofa with matching tufted Louis XIV chairs and a Saarinen table set on glossy white floors form a creative conference area. Soccer balls roll about to lighten the mood. A Chippendale chair at a turned wood dining table makes a desk space, and an overflowing book case with colorfully spined volumes infuses the space with life and language. Before and After: Halsig's Bathroom Makeover

If you saw TeamSugar member Halsig's brilliant lighting design and her impressive kitchen remodel, I'm sure you have no doubt that she's taken that design goodness to other areas of her San Francisco loft as well.

In fact, her remodel of her oh-so-basic bathroom, which she called "a gas station bathroom," might just be what impresses me the most. She installed a Thassos white marble vanity, a Thassos marble white floor, a sleek partition for the toilet area, lights that turn on when the door closes, and a six-foot-long Boffi Makro Cherry Red Glass bath tub with inset marble cubbies. The result is something so high design, it looks straight out of a W Hotel - a far cry from an Exxon bathroom. To see for yourself, read more.

Ever since I snuck up to the rooftop pool at W Hotel in New Orleans for a late-night swim, I've been convinced that a cabana is the key to the ultimate poolside haven. Not only can you use it to slip into your teeny weeny yellow polka-dot bikini, but it's also a great escape from the sun and other poolside dwellers. In other words, it's the quintessence of Summer style. Those of you with a pool might want to open your ears now: the Pottery Barn Chesapeake Changing Cabana ($299, reduced from $429) is on sale and ready to make its debut in your backyard. And, it has a FSC-certified solid eucalyptus frame finished with a protective oil-based wood stain, so it may actually outlast your bikini years.

New York's "Warmer When Occupied" is a sneak peek into the TriBeCa home of architect Diana Kellogg and husband writer-director Neil Burger (Interview With the Assassin, The Illusionist). And, when I say "home," I mean a former cold storage warehouse. The couple had their eye on the place for years, "drawn to the mysterious qualities of the street and the house,” and finally jumped on it in 2001. Though a warehouse conversion is not uncommon these days, preserving its history is. In warehouse neighborhoods around the country, especially in New York, historic buildings are being transformed into distant semblances of themselves, looking more like a W Hotel than the remains of yesteryear. In this case, the couple opted to "preserve traces of how the building functioned,” rather than fighting it. They held onto to small details like "the drill holes for the hoist," as well as the open-floor plan of the space, setting kitchen appliances on the walls, rather than centered around an island. And not only did they preserve these features, they also made note of them; play swings for the children hang from hooks welded to the building’s steel support beams.

Cool Idea: Fringe Benefits

The Inga Sempé Brosse (inquire for price) is a storage unit that proves there truly are benefits to fringe. Its large, car wash-style brush bristles were adapted to conceal shelves storing your personal items, be it books, tableware, or umm . . . home videos. Brosse is a modern alternative to a traditional armoire, bookcase, or cabinet, keeping your possessions out of sight, flapper style. While I suspect that most of you will agree this would be weird in a home, it's certainly inventive, and might look cool in a W-Hotel-meets-Virgin-airlines-style restaurant or club. Tell me, do you think it's cool, weird, or just wild?

Design Cares Event a Success

Last Tuesday Metropolitan Home and the New York Design Center hosted the sixth annual Design Cares charity auction and holiday-cocktail party. Guests came together to participate in the silent auction benefiting the Partnership For the Homeless’s Furnish a Future program. Furnish a Future is New York City’s only free-furniture bank. Since 1992, Furnish a Future has helped more than 22,000 formerly homeless families turn bare rooms into comfortable, functional homes.

Nearly 150 modern-luxury home furnishings, home accessories, and lifestyle goods from some of the world’s top designers and companies were displayed for guests to bid on. Generous donations were provided by such companies as Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams, Lulu DK for Elite Leather, American Leather, CB2, Thomasville, W Hotels, Baker Furniture, and the Conran Shop.

What a great event for this holiday season!

Midday Muse: Another Reason Why Mirrored Furniture Is Cool
