Trick or treat! In just a few days, the streets will be filled with spooky monsters, adorable baby animals, and lots of little princesses - and they all want one thing: candy. Tots will be canvasing the neighborhood trick or treating for goodies, while mama later gets to go through the Halloween booty and approve all the candy that will be consumed. We think homemade goodies, like cookies and cake pops, are more appealing than store-bought candy, but will you allow your kiddos to eat homemade Halloween treats they collect on their trick-or-treating routes?

Halloween is a sugar rush! Before most kiddos set foot out the door, lots of parents lay down a couple of safety guidelines for the night. Here's what LilSugar mamas had to say.

Deciding which costume to make or buy adds to the excitement of Halloween so 73 percent of mamas let their children choose their own outfits.
Lil darlings love to dip their hands into the bag of goodies and munch on sweets as they walk around on Halloween night. Seventy-percent of mamas carefully monitor their tot's intake.
Knock, knock, do you need to know who's behind every door? While some moms map out a specific route for their trick-or-treaters, others allow their kids to venture into unknown neighborhoods. Sixty-three percent of mamas let their kiddos go to strangers' homes.
You might have carried your costumed kiddo or pushed them door-to-door in a pram, but at some point the youngster wants to gather candy with friends. Forty-five percent of moms said this is OK for teens.
Before a child eats their treats, some mamas have their youngsters shake their sacks out on a table and sort through the sweets for suspicious-looking candy. One hundred percent of mamas said they check the candy.

Open House: How Are You Celebrating Halloween?

Whether you've been planning your costume or party for months, or are stuck for last-minute ideas, you should definitely get out there and celebrate tonight! At my house, we'll be waiting on trick-or-treaters (or trying to) and then heading to a friend's party in San Francisco for the evening. I still haven't decided on a costume, but I'm sure I can whip something up at the last minute.

Have a Healthy(ish) Halloween

I love Halloween, but it can be hard to stick to a healthy diet when there are chocolate bars, caramel apples, and candy corn everywhere. Here are a few tips I'll be following to not go overboard during the festivities.

Buy candy at the last minute. There's no temptation to dig into the candy if there isn't any in the house. Stores are open on Halloween, so buy what you need that day.
Don't buy too much. When I was little my dad bought enough candy for the kids in my neighborhood and the next county - the extra lasted for months. Try to judge how much candy you'll need for trick-or-treaters so you won't have any leftovers.
Buy candy you don't like. If you buy candy that you can't stand there won't be any temptation to eat it.
Donate the leftovers. Donate extra candy to a charity. If you have children, decide ahead of time how much of their own stash they can keep and how much they'll donate. If you can't find a charitable organization that will accept the candy, bring it into work for your co-workers.
Give out healthy treats. Skip candy altogether. Instead give out fun, healthy treats like pretzels, glow-stick bracelets, and stickers. No candy equals no temptation.
Host a party. Host your own event or organize a block party with your neighbors. That way you can be accountable for what kind of treats you'll serve. There's lots of Hallowen-themed treats you can serve that are healthy but still seem indulgent.
