Cool Idea: Stacked Books Table Leg

I recently attended a charity event at the Ted Baker store here in San Francisco. Given that Ted Baker is a purveyor of quirky British design, I wasn't surprised to find that the store itself was chock full of inspiration and original interior design ideas. One of these was a neon-green table with one leg built from a stack of books. Genius! Not only does the table just look cool, but it offers a fresh way to repurpose dusty old books. To add another dimension of authenticity to the store, the books used were British in nature, such as Britain's Offshore Islands, Great Britain, and Old English Customs. The weight of the metal table on the books and the fact that it had a sliver of metal leg at the top kept the leg from wobbling, but this might not be the case if you used other materials or a different table design. I did a little research and found a DIY for making table legs out of books, which involves drilling a hole through the books to fit a rod through; it's cool too but not as successful visually. The orange table beside it, which I did not get a photo of, had one leg that only went three-fourths of the way and sat on a slightly deflated basketball, which had been filled with cement or sand or something equally weighty for stability. Bloody marvelous.

Found It! Chuck Bass's Dining Table and Chairs

Chuck's brick red chairs are the West Elm Leather Scoop-Back Chairs ($199-$796).

His dining table is also from West Elm. It's the Round Dining Table with Cutout Legs ($449-$599).

Desire/Acquire: Angled Leg Coffee Table

West Elm is a relatively affordable store, sort of the midpoint between ultra-affordable stores like Ikea and pricier ones like Williams-Sonoma Home and Pottery Barn. It's also full of great modern design, which unless you're shopping at Ikea, is hard to come by at an affordable price. But West Elm items like this Angled-Leg Coffee Table ($299) are still out of reach for many, or simply not sensible if you're a student or in transition. So, I was happy to come across a near-identical, more affordable alternative. To see it, read more.

The Overstock Wenge Round Coffee Table ($169) has nearly the same shape as the West Elm version, with a criss-cross base and round tabletop. It's not as top-heavy and its legs are not actually angled, but I don't think that detracts from the design. Unfortunately, the table is made from MDF, whereas the former is solid wood, which explains why you save about $130.

Have You Ever Built Your Own Furniture?

I can do a lot of crafty things, but I am not a builder. So I am super impressed with this coffee table that Chez Larsson's husband and son built. Aside from the fact that it's gorgeous and one of a kind, it's not just a table top and legs: it has shelves and wheels and curves. Do I hear applause?

A dear friend of mine did make me a gorgeous coffee table from Claro Walnut heartwood, and I'm in awe of it every time I plop down on the couch. Have you ever built your own furniture?

Nice and New: The Sulis Table

The new Sulis table ($3,500) is the perfect occasional table for the green-minded set. Using a wedged tenon design and laser-cut steel brackets, this beautifully crafted table is actually built from fallen trees. Utilizing fallen ash trees in San Diego, CA, and a fallen walnut tree in Seattle, WA, for the table's top, and salvaged red oak from Wisconsin barns for the legs, this table proves that beauty often emerges from the most unexpected of places.

Get the Look: Brad Ford's Lovely Lime Living Room

I'm still swooning over this living room designed by New York-based interior designer Brad Ford. It's light and airy, comfortable, great for entertaining, and well-balanced. There's also a good mix of eras here: the Saarinen side table and swivel head floor lamp are very midcentury, while the quilted white leather ottomans and exposed metal legged sofa are undoubtedly contemporary. As for color, white and lime green are the primary hues here, but touches of pink, blue, and brown give it depth. Learn how to recreate this room when you read more.

Steal of the Day: Pier 1 Mirrored Two-Tier Console Table

I often forget about Pier 1 because it doesn't do e-commerce, and there isn't a store very close to me. But that's not to say the retailer doesn't have a great selection - and great bargains. This Mirrored Two-Tier Console Table ($79.98, reduced from $149.95) is completely chic and versatile, and such a great deal. It has antiqued brass legs and antique mirrors with reverse etching details. Were you to buy an original in an antique store, it could cost you $900, but why put yourself through that pain? Accent tables such as this aren't something you need to invest in; you should spend your big bucks on larger pieces like sofas, dining tables, and armoires. Got a Pier 1 near you? Casa Verde: An Upcycled Headboard

Craftster member Jessyratfink recently posted pictures of this awesome book headboard project. She's no stranger to upcycling old books into home furnishings. In fact, we featured her DIY instructions for a book-legged table here.

Jessy explains, "I work at a used bookstore, and so I was able to save a lot of old books and wanted to reuse them. I've previously done a table with book legs and a bookshelf out of old encyclopedias. I wanted something a little prettier this time. [The headboard] is made out of book covers, Elmer's Glue-All, a plywood backing, and some polyurethane to seal it. It was really simple as you just glue them down in layers!"
