Love It or Hate It? Thumprints Jack Dual Table Lamp

I've seen plenty of hotels and bedrooms with a nightstand between two beds which has a dual table lamp, essentially two lamps that share the same base. But I don't think I've ever seen a dual lampshade. What do you think of this Thumprints Jack Dual Table Lamp ($529)? Is it contemporary and cool, or just cuckoo?

In general, I think German lighting designer Ingo Maurer can do no wrong. But in the case of his Seven Rats Table Lamp ($4,680), which depicts seven plastic rats locked inside a steel, gold, brass, and plastic cage structure, I think he's done bad all by himself. If you like caged-rat art, and you like art in lighting form, then this is for you!

Desire/Acquire: Philippe Starck's Miss K Table Lamp

If I were to purchase every Philippe Starck design I've fallen for, I'd be bankrupt - in a killer house. I already do a good enough job spending money I don't have without the French superstar's help, so really there's got to be an easier way to achieve his design style. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so I doubt Starck would mind if I snatched up a stylish red lamp inspired by his Miss K Table Lamp ($360, on sale for $288). Right? I've got my eye on a great knockoff with a similar Saarinen-shape base and streamlined shade. See it when you read more.

No, maybe the IKEA Lampan ($5) isn't made of the token Lucite Starck's known for (it's made of plastic). But for five bucks and a near replica in both shape and color, I'd choose it any day.

Crave Worthy: Anthropologie Chateau Lamp

Anthropologie has done it again. The Chateau Lamp ($1,598) is every little girl's dream, but I also believe I've seen it myself during REM sleep. This palatial wirework rendering with curlicue turrets, squiggly eaves, and a floor of book leaves is not only a dollhouse of sorts (with a mini table, set of chairs, and glass and bottle of wine inside!), but also a table lamp! Sweet dreams have come to life. Until I burn my paycheck on this baby, I can only imagine what beautiful shadows it casts when lit.

For every Sunnan lamp bought from Ikea, the store will donate a lamp to UNICEF, which will help children in homes without electricity to do their homework after dark. The first donations will go to UNICEF in Pakistan, helping children in refugee camps and remote villages without electricity in two provinces: Balochistan, which was struck by a major earthquake in October 2008, and the North West Frontier province, where unrest has affected half the population and displaced many thousands.

When it comes to chandeliers and floor lamps, I like to buy statement-making pieces. But since the average living room has, I'd say, three table lamps, it's good to keep them subtle and noncompetitive. The Anthropologie Newton Lamp ($99.95, reduced from $198) is just the thing. It's elegant and regal, but its chrome spherical base is quiet. It's also really versatile. Use a natural shade like the one shown here (not included) and it will be ideal for any room in a conservative home. Or, try a longer or wider shade for a more modern look. At this price, I think it's a great buy, seeing that it could work in any one of many spots in your home. You like?

Love It or Hate It? An Upside-Down Lampshade

I spotted this room on Swedish real estate site Alvhem and was swept away by the table lamp flipped on its head. Here, I love it - granted, in part because the shade and base are gorgeous. I think it could definitely be executed effectively in another instance, but I can also see it failing miserably. Do you like this trick?

Found It! Gender-Neutral Bedroom Table Lamp

I noticed that several of you mentioned your love for the table lamp in my recent gender-neutral bedrooms slideshow. I'm with you on that one; it's definitely a statement piece and it does a fabulous job of picking up the subtle blue colors in the bedding. The lamp is the Doug Buffet Lamp ($500) by Stray Dog Designs, who also designed this Crave Worthy lamp. The lamp is made from hand-painted tinplate, has a paper shade, and can take a three-way bulb. I love its spiky flower finial; it really makes the lamp. It's also available in green . . . if you're into that kind of thing.

The Anthropologie One-Lump-or-Two Lamp ($198) is quite cute in a British country cottage way, and I adore its espresso cup finial. But, I'd say it's a tad overpriced for a table lamp that looks so crafty, and that doesn't come with a shade. Luckily, there's a more affordable alternative that can be customized to fit your color scheme. To see it, read more.

Etsy seller Vintage Renaissance hand-crafts these Tea Set Lamps ($100) from vintage dishes so that each one is unique. You can choose your preferred color of Krylon spray paint for the base to personalize the lamp. Unfortunately, the shade is not included. I can see this lamp looking really cool with the right palette and a not-so-country-bumpkin shade. Personally, I'd go with a glossy white base and perhaps a tall, black, silk drum shade.

. . . would you frame your bed with this pair of Italian Glazed Pineapple Lamps with Woven Shades ($3,800)? I would! I love their lighthearted, Palm Springs vibe, but on second thought, I don't think they'd "mesh" with my Bay Area aesthetic. What do you think?
