Lately I am loving swings hung indoors, like the one in Padma Lakshmi's home. But really nothing beats an old swing hung from a sturdy tree outside. I love the idle oscillation of a heavy wooden bench.

When she's not filming a reality show, designing a line of Indian-inspired jewelry, modeling, cooking, or acting, you might find the woman shown here swinging on the handmade swing in the living room of her downtown Manhattan apartment. Who is she?

We may not remember rocking away in bouncy seats as infants, but I'm sure we all remember playing on swing sets as kids. In either case, was it ever not fun? I think not.

If the Modern Cove was too tame for your jungle-inspired living room then let me introduce you to another swaying furniture option. Droog's Swing With the Plants ($550) will fit nicely into a botanically-themed room. Designed by Marcel Wanders, who was elected as “Designer of the Year 2005/2006” by Elle Decoration International Design Awards, the swing embodies his inventive style.

Whether you hang this from a tree in your backyard or integrate it into a beach house living room, the Urban Balance Cove ($998) will add a coveted seating area to your home. I love this piece in part because it strikes the perfect compromise between the needs for childhood fun and adult design. It'll look great in a grown-up design scheme, while still giving your guests a whimsical place to sit.

To get you into the school spirit, I've rounded up some great art that will have you singing your ABCs and reciting your multiplication tables.

This master suite features a barn door in a very modern color. Since it's much too big to swing open, the barn door has been fitted on a track, so it slides open and closed. I love how the less refined door contrasts with the chandelier showcased in the bathroom beyond.

When furnishing this year's Hampton Designer Showhouse, Manhattan-based interior designer Brad Ford made the unusual, and delightful, decision to replace sofas with porch swings. Inspired by Ford's out-of-the-box decision, I decided to check out some other hanging furniture that would look great on the inside of your home. While some of the choices are classics, others are definitely a bit more unusual.
