It's not hard to find affordable rugs these days. Natural fiber/sisal rugs are always good quality and within reach. IKEA's Stockholm Rand Rug ($179) is sharp and classic. But no one wants the rug that everyone else from here to Sweden owns. And sisal rugs, though durable and versatile, won't bring much personality to a room, if that's what you're looking for.

So I'm psyched to see the Room & Board Olive Henley Rug ($199 for 5'x8') on sale. Hand-woven in India of 100 percent wool, it's durable and all-natural. Its olive, blue, and chocolate palette, though, is what won me over. The color scheme is subtle, masculine, and fresh. And, you know as well as I do that stripes never go out of style. What do you think?

But, would you blame me for wanting to set up this chic tent indoors? I'm imagining a cross between Nick Olsen's tented workspace and interior designer Marjorie Skouras's oversize indoor topiary bedroom. We don't all have yard space, but this tasseled, Greek-key item could create a loungey, magical space in any room at least 10 feet in height, depth, and width. Just throw in some sisal or a Moroccan-style rug, plants, a hanging lantern, a few floor pillows, and a sofa like west elm's Overlapping Squares Daybed, and you're done. So cozy, yet so transportive and chic!

I often forget about Pier 1 because it doesn't do e-commerce, and there isn't a store very close to me. But that's not to say the retailer doesn't have a great selection - and great bargains. This Mirrored Two-Tier Console Table ($79.98, reduced from $149.95) is completely chic and versatile, and such a great deal. It has antiqued brass legs and antique mirrors with reverse etching details. Were you to buy an original in an antique store, it could cost you $900, but why put yourself through that pain? Accent tables such as this aren't something you need to invest in; you should spend your big bucks on larger pieces like sofas, dining tables, and armoires. Got a Pier 1 near you? When it comes to chandeliers and floor lamps, I like to buy statement-making pieces. But since the average living room has, I'd say, three table lamps, it's good to keep them subtle and noncompetitive. The Anthropologie Newton Lamp ($99.95, reduced from $198) is just the thing. It's elegant and regal, but its chrome spherical base is quiet. It's also really versatile. Use a natural shade like the one shown here (not included) and it will be ideal for any room in a conservative home. Or, try a longer or wider shade for a more modern look.
