Despite the fact that much of it conjures memories of school fair spin art, 223 lots of work by Damien Hirst grossed a record $200 million at a Sotheby's auction in London this week. Perhaps you agree with Andy Warhol, who said, "Art is what you can get away with." In that case, you'd snatch up Hirst's spin art in a heartbeat (if you had the dough). But maybe you're not impressed by his work, and you'd rather hang one of your own finger paintings on the wall. Where do you fall?Source

This Just In: Paris Antique Dealer Closing, Sotheby's NY to Hold Huge Auction

According to the New York Times,
one of the most prominent antiques dealers in Paris, Ariane Dandois, is going out of business after 34 years and Sotheby's New York is holding the blow-out sale of her inventory. The sale of Dandois's sleekly modern three-floor Right Bank gallery and her warehouse on the Left Bank will take place on October 25 and 26.

The stock of over 1500 pieces consists primarily of furniture and other decor from France, Italy, Russia, Scandinavia, Spain, Germany, and England, particularly the neo-classical period of the late 18th and early 19th century. She also maintains a large selection of Asian and Indian Art, and Japanese screens.

The sale will take place in New York because 80 percent of Dandois's business is with American collectors and decorators, and is expected to realize as much as $16 million. Open House: The Ladies of the House

From today until April 14, the exhibition Women can be seen at Sotheby's New York. The artwork, all of which depict the feminine figure, is on loan to Sotheby's from the collection of Steven and Alexandra Cohen. While most of us can only dream about having a Vincent van Gogh on display in our home, that doesn't mean that feminine art is out of our grasp.

While I have a number of paintings in my home depicting everything from nature to furniture, it occurs to me that there are no feminine figures depicted on canvas or in print. This seems like a problem that should be remedied soon.

Do you have any feminine artwork in your home? Do you have any pencil sketches of nudes? How about paintings or prints of elegant ladies? Do you shy away from artwork depicting the human figure, or do you embrace it wholeheartedly? Tell me in the comments.

Casa Quickie: Hang It Diagonally

It's a dream to curate a personal collection of original art, but it's not always in the budget. Sometimes, though, just the frame you use to hang something or the way it's hung is visually intriguing enough that what's behind the glass is of little consequence. Artists, designers, and art directors Jonathan and Annie Zawada made the most of a simple drawing by hanging it diagonally in their Sydney home, photographed by Todd Selby. The sketch itself isn't particularly arresting or bold, but the atypical way it's hung makes it eye-catching. Maybe framing a simple doodle, an old love letter, or the like and hanging it 45 degrees off will be just the thing to hold you over until you can afford to bid on originals at Sotheby's. P.S. How rad is that matchstick floor lamp?

Would You Hang This In Your Home?

Who might appreciate this precious art asset? Perhaps Sir Mix-A-Lot? He is a fan of both music and fannies. No matter where you hung this untitled wax sculpture by artist Robert Gober (up for auction at Sotheby's in New York in two weeks), you know it would spark some conversation. I'm just not sure if it's the type of conversation you'd necessarily want to engage in.

Coveted Crib: Nest

I've long admired Minneapolis artist Amy Rice's fantastic artwork, and when I ran across photos from her collaboration with artist and textile designer Terrence Payne, "Nest," I had to share them with you. Collaborating with Sotheby's real estate group, Rice and Payne transformed a historic Minneapolis home into an artistic wonderland, layering furniture and home accents with their imagery and patterns.

I'm particularly taken with the over-the-top eccentricity of the Fuzzy Ball chair. If you look closely, you can see that the balls have been arranged in a floral pattern, mimicking the pattern of a more traditionally textiled wingback chair. Take a look at the rest of the house when you read more.

How Would You . . .

For the next round of this challenge, I'd like you to take a look at this Pair of Sheep Sculptures (sold). These 1960s Dollys were made with real angora in the manner of one of the art world's most original designer-sculptors, Claude Lalanne. LaLanne and his wife Francois-Xavier are a sculpting and industrial designing pair known for their Surrealist and Realist objets d'art, like these life-size furry creatures that Coco Chanel kept in her living room. The French couple have been collaborating for 50 years, but have recently become hotter than ever in the States, with their pieces selling for big bucks at auction houses like Sotheby's, an English language book on their work published and a major New York exhibition of their work last year. So, my question for you is how would you use these LaLanne imitation sculptures in your home? Would you leave them as is as art pieces? Would you put hats on them in your front window to give passersby a smirk? Would you even buy them if you could afford to? Would you use them as a coat rack at parties? Hang your beret on their muzzles? Use one as a doorstop? Keep the in a kids' room? Tell me how you envision these sheep in your home by commenting below!

Coveted Crib: Gwen Stefani's Old Digs

According to Big Time, the former home of Gwen Stefani, and current home of That '70s Show creator Mark Brazill is on the market for nearly $4.9 million. Built in 1928, Sotheby's calls it "one of the finest Mediterranean estates in Los Feliz." With Moroccan-looking tiles throughout, many original architectural details, as well as magnificent landscaping, it truly is stunning. While certain elements of the interior design do enhance its appeal, the architectural bones of this 1920s Mediterranean home are what elevate it to Coveted Crib status.
