Home Away From Home: A Skate-Inspired Hotel Suite

Skateboard label Etnies is rolling into the world of hospitality. The California-based brand has designed a skate-inspired hotel suite in Laguna Beach's Casa del Camino. But you won't find any Etnies logo monogrammed sheets here. "We didn’t want to make it look like a trade show," said VP of marketing Don Brown. "We focused more on the culture of skateboarding, taking the movement, curves and shapes and injecting that into the design."

Elements include wheel tracks on the ceiling, a mirror framed with skateboard wheels, mounted skateboards for guests to use, and "Go Sk8" artwork in the bathroom. My favorite piece is the God Father Lounge Chair, a leather chair and ottoman inspired by Eames's iconic Lounge Chair, made of pieces which remarkably resemble a skateboard deck. Love It or Hate It? Shred Bed

Pro skater Chad Knight has made his bed, and now he's gonna profit from it. His Shred Bed (inquire for price) features a headboard and footboard made of skateboards. It seems like skateboards are everywhere in the design world these days (see here and here). Would you sleep in a Shred Bed?

At one point in my life, this would be a no-brainer for me. Back when all of my boyfriends (and myself, too) hung out on skateboards and in skateboard parks, this would've been a perfect addition to our homes. Can you see any room for it in yours?

Cool Idea: Subhead Anti-Slip Stickers

Since I've got skateboard-inspired furniture on my mind, I figured I'd ask you to turn a basic skateboard into furniture or décor in your home. Your furniture vision can include as many skateboards as you like, so long as they're the main attraction. For inspiration, check out this skateboard turned art (fifth photo down), and see PBteen's collection of skateboard wheel finials, as well as the skateboard row of hooks and the shelf below.

Simple Style: Skateboard Shelf

This skateboard shelf would be just as easy to install as bracket shelving, but the unexpected surface - and its accompanying wheels - make it fun and edgy. I love how graphic designer Mathieu Hubert (via Poppytalk) uses it to display retro toys.

All you'd need to make it is an old skateboard and two shelf brackets, screwed into the board and affixed to the wall.

Cool Idea: Skate Deck Art

Stretched canvas doesn't show signs of going out of style any time soon, but it's not the only place for paintings. Shannon of FotoFlat, a photoblog showcasing small details throughout her home, shared this photo of a skate deck painted and hung in her home as artwork. She says her boyfriend had "wanted to hang a skateboard (his first love) in the hall as art for as long as [they've] lived together." So they commissioned a friend to paint this abstract portrait on a never-been-built deck they had lying around. I think the shape of the deck is ideal for a figure painting, and it's more intriguing graphically than a canvas frame.
