Before and After: An Old Sideboard Gets a Hip Makeover

Aside from its missing drawer handle, there's nothing really wrong with this old sideboard. It has a rich color and a beautiful glossy finish. But, sad as it may be, this style of wood furniture is not very of-the-moment. Everyone wants to paint, paint, paint these days. And wallpaper. Paint and wallpaper, paint and wallpaper. I think there should be a balance of both. You've got to mix some wood pieces in with your painted, metal, and plastic ones.

I think it looks great! The marine paint really makes the sideboard's ornate shape stand out, and the two papered drawers add a whimsical touch. Lately, the trend is to paint furniture in high-gloss, but I really like the matte finish of this piece. It seems less frivolous and more timeless than glossy pieces. What do you think?

Casa Quickie: Take It Outside

As we all know, furniture, even high-quality furniture, is not everlasting. Years of wear and tear will get the best of your tables and chairs. But that's not the end of them. So long as it is stable, a ghastly, dinged-up, chipped sideboard can find new life outdoors. Consider using your old tables, storage units, and seating in your garden or garage or as a potting station. A worn finish will integrate flawlessly with your potting soil and those aged terracotta planters. Turn your own home into a recycling plant!

Crave Worthy: Polka Dot Credenza

There's something so Serena van der Woodsen about this Polka Dot Credenza ($2,299); can't you just see it in her polka dot bedroom? I can certainly see it in mine! Thanks to an internal lighting system and frosted glass discs set in the dark beech wood frame, this credenza diffuses light beautifully, almost like a constellation. It's obviously designed for a modern home, but I think there's a lot of versatility in where you could use it . . . in the dining room to store linens, a living room as media storage, or a bedroom to stash clothes and personal items. I think it's stellar, don't you?

Desire/Acquire: Modern Sideboard

A sideboard is an incredibly useful piece of furniture. At large dinner parties, it can be used as an additional serving area, or even as a temporary cocktail bar. And in everyday living, it adds attractive storage space for your finer dishes and table linens. A modern sideboard can easily fit into a number of decorating schemes, and its sleek lines and simple silhouette make a natural addition to many a dining room.

The 006 Atlantico Sideboard ($3,295) is available in American white oak, American cherry, or walnut finishes, and features tapered legs and a long and lean profile. Sliding doors access three storage drawers on one side, and a central shelf on the other side allows for the inclusion of larger items, such as serving bowls. It's definitely a gorgeous, well-made piece, and it's also worth noting that the Atlantico, which is made by Portugeuse furniture company De La Espada, sources all wood from sustainable forests.

Desire/Acquire: White Modern Sideboard

This mid-century Bahut Sideboard ($10,732) was designed by Jean Prouve in 1951, and is a great example of the architect and designer's functional metal furniture. This piece is made from diamond sheet metal that's been covered with a layer of creamy lacquer. While I love the sleek look of this metallic sideboard, it's definitely more than I'd be willing to spend on a single piece.

The MASH Studios Wall Mounted Sideboard ($675) may not have as innovative of a silhouette as the Bahut, but its minimalist price tag more than makes up for that difference in my opinion. The body of this sideboard is made from solid English walnut, and the doors are crafted from two sliding powder-coated white aluminum panels. In fact, I'm pretty sure that I prefer the look of this second option. What about you?

Crave Worthy: Jethro Macey Sideboard

If you told me the words lace, sideboard, white, floral, lacquer, and modern could exist all in one breath, I wouldn't believe you - and I'd likely chastise you for being a tease. But impressively, those adjectives do exist all together . . . in the Jethro Macey Sideboard ($8,000 and up). The white sideboard has a lacquered surface and its doors shine with a textured rose pattern that emulates antique lace. I love how the masculine quality of its clean lines and mid-century-style legs are juxtaposed with the femininity of the rose pattern. It's subtly stunning, and would make killer storage for a modern bedroom, living room, or dining room. Macey also sells concrete lace tiles with the same repeating decorative rose pattern that's a really innovative style of surface design. To see the tiles, read more.

Crave Worthy: Modern Cellar Skylight Wine Credenza

I'm a big fan of any piece of furniture that serves my drinking habit . . . and I don't mean a Tower of Power. I'm speaking more along the lines of a bar cart, but something about them sort of screams bachelor pad to me. So, when I came across a handsome credenza that doubled discreetly as a wine rack, I really had a reason to pop the cork. The Modern Cellar Skylight Wine Credenza (inquire for price) stores wine, stemware, plateware, and serving accessories: nearly all the necessities for a sophisticated dinner party (add friends and food, and blend). Hand rubbed with a walnut oil finish, made of one-pieced sides and top, it's truly beautiful, and will take on a wonderful patina as it ages. And, its sliver of glass on the top reveals your beloved wine collection. Just make sure to store your two buck Chuck on its lower level . . .

The Horchow Hand-Painted Cabinet ($1,299) is painted with swirls and florals of gold, teal, and antiqued cream for a colorful, Moroccan look. As shown, it makes a beautiful bar for the love shack, but I'd also love to see it holding bath towels in a tranquil, spa-like bathroom. Crave Worthy: Napoleon Sideboard

I love everything about this Napoleon Sideboard ($1,995). Okay - that's a lie. I don't love its price. But everything else about this sideboard, from its distressed black finish to its grace-imbued lines to its antique brass hardware, has me craving it something fierce. While it's definitely out of my budget at the moment, I'm going to have to keep my eye out for a similar one the next time I stop by the Alameda Flea Market.

Do you find this romantic sideboard as crave worthy as I do?
