Sugar Editorial Picks

In last night's episode of The City, Olivia Palermo accepts an editorial job from the creative director of Elle. I love how he's staged his artwork in his office. Leaning and layering framed artwork on a shelf or table is more casual than hanging it, which is ideal for the workplace.

Having open bathroom storage demands that you keep things neat, or are comfortable with mess, and have no embarrassing prescriptions out in the open — that is, if you're expecting guests. In many ways it's just easier to keep things behind closed doors. But open shelving, such as these glass shelves, can make the room seem bigger and also create an elegant display.

The Container Store is holding its Annual Storewide Shelving Sale, offering 25 percent off all of their shelving, including the Elfa system, InterMetro, Metro Commercial, modular steel cubes, solid mahogany modular cubes, Ladoro, freestanding, Janus, and wall-mounted shelving. Looking at the pile of shoes in my closet is pretty much akin to looking into a toy box, so I think I'll take advantage of this sale and get my footwear under control with some affordable shelving! Here are a few things I wouldn't mind taking home from the sale:

Designer Kenneth Brown offers this smart idea for integrating vinyl record collections into a home. Instead of bulky record shelves (which is what I currently live with), he designed pull-out, partially exposed drawers to house a family's 2,000+ records. I love the accessibility of this storage solution, and the varying shades and patterns of the record spines offer a built-in design accent.

Su Casa member Divagwendolyn recently posted pictures of a friend's creative use of an unusual furniture item. Here's the piece in use in her friend's home.
Can you guess what this sleek-looking shelf has been constructed from?

Do you live in a house that's severely lacking in built-in kitchen space? No worries — you can add some much-needed storage space with this Montgomery Ward Kitchen Cabinet ($99.99, originally $149.99). With a classic shape, four drawers, and a one-door cabinet with adjustable shelving, it will add a welcome cache for additional servingware or table linens.

Stanislav Katz Book Shelving (inquire for price) takes any notion you have of a bookcase and hangs it up on the wall. What looks like a flat steel piece shaped like the silhouette of a traditional armoire lays flush against the wall, with hot pink Ikea Lack-like shelves affixed to it, to cut out an entire dimension of a classic "bookcase." I'd love to see this executed with a wall decal or a can of paint and some basic shelves.

There is a lot going on in this Growing Together Shelf with Tube Vases at Wrapables ($68.95). The wall shelf, designed to hold books or CDs, features three bud vases being "watered" by figures of a man and woman.

Thank goodness Jackieos bookmarked this Gump's Cerulean Display Case ($3,950), or otherwise, I would have never known to start saving money to buy it as soon as humanly possible. In case you couldn't tell, I absolutely love this shelving unit, which would be perfect for displaying china or another collection.
I like that it looks somewhat traditional but mixes things up by juxtaposing the bright aqua back wall with the dark lacquered wood.
