Flipping through the latest issue of Living Etc, I was awestruck by a cool grandfather clock. The quirky and modern design has built-in shelving to hold your housewares - perfect for kitchenware or books.

"Must. Have," I thought. Then I realized it was from Ikea. Could the world be any sweeter? Unfortunately, the answer is yes, it could be, because the design doesn't seem to be available in the States yet. Until then, I'll just have to settle with these cool clocks. But, if you live in the UK, you can buy it for £129.

Steal of the Day: Ruffle Frame Shelf

We've all got walls and stuff to display and store, so who can argue with a wall shelf? Especially a beautiful one that's on sale. The Brocade Home Ruffle Frame Shelf ($199, reduced from $299) is my kind of shelf. White. Ornate. Feminine. And wood, to boot. The great thing is that even if you're displaying a plastic toy horse or a fortune cookie (i.e. not something particularly chic), the frame shelf will do all the glamorous work. Even a note from a creditor will look sexy on this baby . . . let's just hope you don't have any of those.

Love It or Hate It? Wallflower Wallrack

While I do applaud the Wallflower Wallrack (inquire for price) for doing without the use of screws, dowels, or tools (it stays stable thanks to four elastic buffers and a steel leg), its stainless steel leg is a space hog. And, at seven in the morning, when you're half-awake entering the bathroom to wash your face, the chance of tripping on that protruding leg is a real possibility. But . . . at least it looks cool.

Sale Alert: The Container Store Shelving Sale

The Container Store is holding its Annual Storewide Shelving Sale, offering 25 percent off all of their shelving, including the Elfa system, InterMetro, Metro Commercial, modular steel cubes, solid mahogany modular cubes, Ladoro, freestanding, Janus, and wall-mounted shelving. Looking at the pile of shoes in my closet is pretty much akin to looking into a toy box, so I think I'll take advantage of this sale and get my footwear under control with some affordable shelving! Nice and New: Aphrodite Shelf

Aphrodite had the mythological ability make any man fall in love with her, but I think she works her ways with the ladies, too. The Modern Dose Aphrodite Shelf ($145) certainly has my heart all aflutter, giving the neoclassical a modern edge with acrylic in the shape of an ancient Grecian bust. And you know me, I always need another place to store all of my shelter magazines! The shelf is available in slick black or white, and as a left and right facing pair, or individually. I'm thinking of getting this goddess look with one on either side of a painting or mirror in my home.

It's made from a serving cart! Divagwendolyn writes, "A dear friend of mine is so creative he took the serving cart shown here, turned it upside down, and created shelves. The glass was actually custom made for the top of the 'shelving unit' (and yes, he carried that heavy piece of glass home on the subway!). Talk about amazing. I would have never known that this was a serving cart. He even has plastic bumpers on the handles to protect his floor."

Cool Idea: Fringe Benefits

The Inga Sempé Brosse (inquire for price) is a storage unit that proves there truly are benefits to fringe. Its large, car wash-style brush bristles were adapted to conceal shelves storing your personal items, be it books, tableware, or umm . . . home videos. Brosse is a modern alternative to a traditional armoire, bookcase, or cabinet, keeping your possessions out of sight, flapper style. While I suspect that most of you will agree this would be weird in a home, it's certainly inventive, and might look cool in a W-Hotel-meets-Virgin-airlines-style restaurant or club. Tell me, do you think it's cool, weird, or just wild?

Good, Better, Best: Wall-Mounted Nightstands

For modernists and those of us short on space, a wall-mounted nightstand is a sleek and functional furnishing that gets the job done. And by job, I mean holds your cell phone, reading material, and maybe a bedside carafe . . . oh, and looks good. Of course, you could DIY a simple shelf held up by a bracket if you really wanted to be minimal, but it's nice to have a drawer/cabinet of some sort to hold your unmentionables and/or Bible. So, I've hand picked three wall-mounted nightstands to put you and yours to bed. All you have to do is get yourself off your mattress in the morning.

Good (left): Believe it or not, the Ikea MALM Bedside Table ($49.99) is affordable! It has one open shelf to give you easy access to your books, remote control, etc. and a drawer to hide those unsightly possessions of yours. But, although it's available in a variety of finishes, it is made of particleboard; you get what you pay for.

There are two other options, so read more.

Better (top right): The CB2 Sleepy Hollow Storage Shelf ($149) has a stylish, streamlined look to it, but features a flip-down cabinet rather than a drawer. It's also made of wood composite with a bamboo veneer not solid wood, which, despite environmentally friendly qualities, means its shelf-life won't be long.

Best (bottom right): There's no doubt in my mind that Sleepy Hollow is a knock-off of the Modernlink Britt Floating Nightstand ($980), which is made of farm harvested and sustainable bamboo. Its drawer floats in the middle as the nightstand itself floats on the wall, leaving you room to stash your books and things on all sides of the drawer, and of course place your ice-cold glass of water on top.

Dating back to the 1920s, this Pair of Bindery Carts ($1,750) from Bond and Bowery are a rare and interesting find. These super-strong carts were once used to ferry books and paper around binderies. But, as you may have suspected, I am not in the business of sourcing furniture for publishers.

So, for this latest How Would You post, I'd like you to think outside the home-decorating box and find some creative ways to repurpose this unusual, but handsome, pair of objects. How would you use them in your home? In what room? For what purpose? Would you leave them right side up or turn them on their sides? Remove the wheels? Deconstruct them all together? Love It or Hate It? "Half a Portion" Mirror with Shelf
