Love It or Hate It? Kumi Kookoon Silk Sheets

DIY: Homemade Hammock

Yesterday I told you about how I sewed a hammock for my backyard by riffing on instructions from the Getaway issue of ReadyMade magazine. If you want to get the exact instructions from the magazine, head down to your local bookstore and pick up a copy. In fact, I urge you to do so, as there are a ton of other cool Summer projects that will keep you occupied and crafting this month.

What You'll Need

Sewing machine
Thread
Queen- or king-sized sheet or duvet cover
Rope for hanging hammock

How To Do It

Fold your sheet or duvet cover in half lengthwise, pin the edges, and sew. I only sewed the three open edges, leaving the folded side loose.
Now, after you've finished sewing, fold the top and bottom edge down about four inches. Pin, then sew each pinned edge, leaving the sides open. The sides are where you'll thread the rope through to hang the hammock
Sew this pinned edge a lot. After all, it has to support your weight in the hammock. I sewed it eight times on each side.
Cut your rope so you have about five feet on each side (or more, depending how long you need it to be to hang from your tree/deck/porch). Scoot the rope through the ends that you've just sewn

Tie each end to a sturdy object, such as a tree or a beam on your deck or porch. Knots that I recommend are double overhand stopper knot, water knots, and figure eight follow throughs. Gingerly test the strength of your knots and hammock. After you've determined the strength, kick back.
Grab a book and a lemonade, and enjoy the afternoon!

How To: Wash Your Sheets

Ask the Decorator online home-improvement and decorating show host Meghan Carter interviewed Alan Jesseman, the creative director at Anichini, to learn the right way to wash your sheets. He offered some expert tips on the task, some of which may make you realize you've been doing it all wrong! I've summarized a few for you:

Sheets should always be washed; you don't want dry-cleaning chemicals close to your body.
Use a mild detergent or soap, something that doesn't have any whiteners or brighteners, and something that has minimal fragrance or colorings to it.
Test oxygen bleaches on a corner before using to make sure it won't take the color out.

Always dissolve your detergent in the water first and let it agitate for a minute before you put the clothes in.
Everything will last longer if you use a front-loading washer; they're much more gentle because they don't have the agitator in the middle.
Hot water is very harsh on the fibers and colors, and will shorten the lifespan of your sheets. Use cool or lukewarm water.
If you line dry your sheets, the wind will blow most of the wrinkles out of them, and you won't get lint (a sign of your sheets breaking down). If you live in a city and can't line dry, use your dryer on the air tumble (fluff dry) cycle.
Take your sheets out of your dryer before they're bone dry (hot and dry) because that's hard on the fibers.
Sheets smell best if you line dry them in the snow!

How-To: Hospital Corners

It's time to put a stop to sloppily made beds and have yours looking so fresh and so clean. Get your hands on a sheet and a mattress to begin, and then learn the steps when you, read more.

Stand next to your bed and hold the long end (the one without a trim or hem) of your sheet with both hands.
Flip out the sheet over the bed, so it billows and spreads over your mattress. Make sure it hangs evenly over all sides of the mattress. The long edges should be parallel to the floor, hanging below the bottom of the mattress.
Snug the short end of the sheet under the end of the mattress, making sure it lies smoothly between the box spring and mattress.
Go to the other (short) end of the bed, and pull the sheet taut. Repeat step 3, maintaining tension in the sheet.
Go back to the long side of the bed and tuck the edge of the sheet under your mattress, creating a vertical fold.
Go to the opposite of the bed and repeat step 5. Tug firmly to make the surface taut.
Presto! Hospital corners.

John Robshaw, who uses traditional printing, dying and weaving techniques to create his beautiful textiles, just opened an online storefront. I've seen his wonderful rouge floral quilts everywhere lately, including on Design*Sponge's bed. His e-commerce site sells bedding, duvets, shams, quilts, throws, pillows, pillowcases, sheets, tablecloths, crib sets, and even clothing. The inventory is still in its pre-order phase now, but most items are expected to ship by next week. I personally would love to have one of his patterned throw pillows for my solid-colored sofa. Wish list!
