I’m not even in the market for new bedding, but there’s something about an exceptional piece of velvet that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside (i.e. want to shop). Pottery Barn knows what I’m talking about: the retailer’s new Velvet Linen Quilts and Shams (originally $39-$299, on sale for $24-$179) have that soft, weighty, and wintry texture and elegant diamond hand-quilting that instantly win my attention. Throw in the wide range of colors available (choose from sherwood green, sapphire blue, chrome gray, green apple, glacier blue, deep wisteria purple, orange, espresso, or ivory) and the reduced price, and where do I sign? That was easy. Now, getting me out of bed is another story . . .

I was glad to read that I'm not the only one who hates it when guests sleep on pillow shams. Don't people know they are for decoration?

Perhaps it's easier to make the distinction between pillow case and pillow sham (which goes over the pillow case) when dealing with a Euro sham. These square covers, which often come with fancy bedding sets, are designed to fit the large Euro pillows that many people layer behind standard pillows to create added decoration and cushion. Euro shams typically measure 26-by-26-inches square.

The new Garnet Hill catalog showed up in my mailbox this week, and I flipped through it briefly, thinking I'd seen everything new already. I realized this was clearly not the case when the Modern Dandelion Bedroom Collection ($32- $158) stole my heart. A part of me is considering redecorating my bedroom altogether, or switching the sheets seasonally just so I can welcome this pattern into my home. The combination of a sophisticated retro/contemporary pattern and charming color palettes (natural/stone or pink/red) is an updated take on vintage motifs. Perfect for a modern couple or a chic single, don't you think?

Nice and New: west elm Organic Cotton Safari Print Bedding

The new west elm Organic Cotton Safari Print Duvet Cover and Shams ($23–$127) give the words "wild thing" a whole new meaning. They have a 250-thread count that claims to be "luxuriously smooth." Equally important, they're handsome and understated, with an animal print that you won't get sick of. Oh, and they've got that trendy-zebra thing going for 'em. Personally, I think they'd go wonderfully with the Pottery Barn Faux Fur Coverlet ($249) that I bought on a whim.

Crave Worthy: Blissliving Anis Duvet Set

I love the botanical silhouettes on this Blissliving Anis Duvet Set ($200), and the playful pink and green embroidered songbirds are super sweet, if those are your colors. If it weren't for the splashes of color, I'd think the black and white pattern was too cooler-than-thou to make the cut in my bedroom, but alas—colors save the day. The duvet and sham set also gets a shot in the arm with its 300 thread count, and that ain't bad either.

After noticing that several of my house guests slept on my pillow shams, rather than the pillow cases underneath, I began to suspect that not everyone knows what a sham is. Because a pillow sham isn't mean to be slept on; it is a decorative cover for a bed pillow that goes over the regular pillow case when the bed is all made up. Often, pillow shams match the bedspread or duvet cover, and you will often find them sold as part of a bedding set.

They would work with both traditional and modern décors, and could be a cool punch of color with simple white sheets, or a creative kick along with mismatching patterned linens.

Nice and New: Vintage Bird Duvet Cover and Shams

Ok, so I thought I was ready to admit that birds were for the, well, birds. But darn it, this new Vintage Bird Duvet Cover and Shams ($19 to $159) has me singing a different tune. I love the simple black line drawing-like print of the birds and trees on the creamy 230-thread count combed cotton fabric. The pattern is available in shams, duvet cover, and comforter, which comes in a choice of down or down-alternative batting. I am definitely tempted to put these on my wedding registry. There's only one thing holding me back: When the dog hops on the bed, I guarantee she'll leave her gray/black/brown fur on this in plain sight. Ah, a conundrum!

Lilly Pulitzer to Debut Bedding Line For Garnet Hill

Palm Beach prep is coming home. Pink and green queen Lilly Pulitzer will debut a new home goods collection for Garnet Hill in January. The line will include bedding and bath accessories in her signature happy chic colors. Bedding designs will include "Truly Lilly, " "Classic Lilly," and "Trend Lilly" with sheets, quilts, comforter covers, shams, pillow covers, coverlets, and bedskirts. The bath designs will include a shower curtain in starfruit yellow; Chinoiserie towels in hibiscus pink, starfruit yellow and surf blue; a Chinoiserie tufted bath rug in hibiscus pink, starfruit yellow and surf blue, and a juice stand shower curtain in turquoise.

This isn't the first time Lilly has entered the interiors business. The company has had other bedding collections, but they've ceased production. From this sneak peek image of the collection, it seems to be much more contemporary. And the quilting is beautiful!

When my aunt was growing up, she bought a stack of quilting fabric squares from her local Lilly shop in Palm Beach and sewed her very own Lilly Pulitzer quilt. To this day, she still owns it and I've always been covetous. I guess now she won't be the only one with a Palm Beach princess bedroom.
