Guess Who Designed This Chest?

I recently watched Sex and the City: The Movie again (still love it!), and noticed this chest of drawers in the office of Carrie Bradshaw's editor at Vogue. The dresser was designed by a very influential American interior designer of the early-to-mid '20s. She wrote an inspiring, and quite popular, decorating book in 1939, called Decorating Is Fun! Can you name her?

Found It! Samantha Jones's Stool Lamp

For obvious reason, I return again and again to the interiors from Sex and the City. Each SATC lady had her own flair and personal style, and each woman's apartment illustrated this. Right now, I'm loving confident, modern interiors, so I took a look back at Samantha Jones's digs. A lamp that doubles as stool or small side table stood out to me. Found It! Aleksandr Petrovsky's Dining Room Chairs

I recently saw a few re-runs from season six of Sex and the City, and I was blown away, yet again, by Aleksandr Petrovsky's chic Manhattan loft apartment. From the to-die-for views to the sheer size of the place, it's utterly crave worthy.

In this scene, from episode 92, "Splat!" Aleksandr and Carrie's dinner party isn't going very smoothly, to say the least. SATC fans will recall that talk of vibrators and Billy Joel do not impress Aleksandr, and Carrie's pals all write him off as a snob. However, one element of the dinner party that everyone can agree on (in my humble opinion) is the fabulousness of the dining room chairs.

They're the Cherner Side Chairs ($679) in walnut. Reproductions of the 1958 original, which was designed by Norman Cherner, the side chair features a molded plywood seat constructed from laminated plywood in graduated thickness. The chair is a true classic of modern design, and absolutely beautiful. See? Petrovsky might be a snob, but he's a snob with great taste.

Before and After: A Very Carrie Bedroom

TeamSugar member Ashley moved into her first house seven months ago, and wanted to redecorate her bedroom to reflect her taste and personality. She decided to use Carrie Bradshaw's blue bedroom as a guide for making over the boudoir. And the best part? Ashley says that "using existing furniture, bargain finds and DIY I spent very little."

Ashley used Benjamin Moore Electric Blue paint for the wall color, and scored the white lacquer desk for $100 at the Pottery Barn Outlet. She noted that it had a couple of nicks, but she was able to cover them with appliance paint. For the art, she bought inexpensive photo frames from the dollar store and the craft store and sourced art through cheap prints at sales, and even printed some with her printer and photo paper.

"Basically I plotted out the major pieces I wanted and scoped out bargain décor stores, linen sales, or thought of a DIY way to make it happen," explains Ashley."It only took me about a month and with my existing furniture and the projects I spent less than $500, linens, curtains, paint, vanity, table, and all misc décor items. "

I love the change that Ashley made to her bedroom, and her cheap and chic makeover proves that you can accomplish big decorating changes on a minimal budget. Definitely check out the gallery for more views of her smashing, very Carrie bedroom.

Does Your Design Style Rule Your Love Life?

I recently caught a first season episode of Sex and the City, Bay of Married Pigs, where Charlotte dates a man on the marriage track, Sean. Not long after they begin dating, they find themselves looking at china patterns together, and Charlotte dumps him when she realizes his pattern of choice isn't up to her standards. Carrie narrates, "Charlotte ended it right then and there. It would never work. He was American Classic and she was French Country."
Since I've never been in this situation, I can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing, but it does seem a bit irrational. On the other hand, I can be quite stubborn when it comes to compromising my tastes in interior design.

Designer Spotlight: Ondine Karady

Today's Designer Spotlight goes by the name of Ondine Karady. Ring a bell? That's probably because you've watched her facing challenges and wowing us with her design skills on season two of Top Design. As you may know, Ondine was part of a small team of designers on the set of Sex and the City. Unfortunately for all of us (tear) Sex and the City's television pulse stopped beating, but Ondine moved forward, starting her own eponymous SoHo-based boutique design firm. She's since carried an impressive list of clients, including celebs, Hollywood directors, and Washington political elite. Her firm, OK, also has a collection of custom furniture, ceramics, and hand silk-screened wallpapers inspired by mid-century designs. Open House: Would You Register For a Housewarming?

In Philip Galanes's latest Social Q's column, a 32-year-old woman wrote in saying that she'd decided that marriage wasn't for her. However, since she'd been in eight weddings and had to contribute oodles of presents over the past decade, she wanted to register for gifts for her housewarming party.

Galanes advises,

But the difference between their weddings and baby showers and your housewarming scheme is that their sole intent was not to rack up gifts. Don’t get me wrong: a housewarming is a great idea, and you may nab some nice loot. No gift registry, though. The party should be for celebrating your new place with friends, not for telling them how to outfit your kitchen.

This situation reminds me of an episode of Sex and the City. Can you guess which one? Find out when you read more.

In season six, episode 83, "A Woman's Right to Shoes," Carrie's Manolos are stolen at a baby shower. To recoup her losses, Carrie decides to register at Manolo Blahnik, in celebration of her marriage to herself. In the end, her beloved shoes are replaced, and all ends well for our heroine. While I admire Carrie's nontraditional registering, I don't think I'd have the audacity to do something similar. Would you?

By the same token, do you agree or disagree with Galanes's advice for the woman interested in registering for home items? I know that in the past I've felt annoyed by the many, many baby presents, bridal shower gifts, and wedding presents I've purchased in my lifetime, but since I'm now married, I have absolutely no right to complain about these things anymore. However, I know that my attitude might be different if I were still single. What are your thoughts?

Do You Decorate With Duck Decoys?

In an episode of Sex and the City, Trey's mother Bunny MacDougal festoons his Park Avenue apartment with duck decoys and plaid curtains, in a begrudging attempt to wield control over her son; Charlotte was less than pleased. All in-law issues aside, if it were me, I'd opt out of the duck decoys regardless, unless I'd spray painted them in glossy white to be cheeky or ironic. How about you? Do you decorate with duck decoys?

What You're Wanting: Carrie Bradshaw's Apartment

For this past What You're Wanting, I thought I'd give you a chance to design your own version of Carrie Bradshaw's apartment.

One look that really caught my eye was put together by Sundaygreen, who wrote "I think Carrie would pick out classic staples (chairs and other furniture) and build upon that with accessories and other 'this and that' items. Let's face it, she wasn't always in the money, and I'd imagine her collective interior style to be more haphazard than anything else (much like her wardrobe?) - but always reflecting her stylish taste and sometime quirkiness."

Ehadams wrote that, "To get Carrie's new apartment look, the trick is to combine modern with traditional, blue with brown, and a lot of white accents. Start with a rounded off-white loveseat, and decorate with colorful blue patterned pillows. A natural rug and a white modern chair compliment the sofa. Nearby stand two mirrored side tables with white lamps. A square white desk with a black cushioned chair gives Carrie space to work. A brown and blue leaf rug paired with a brown brushstroke bedspread brings the color to the other side of the room. And to make the room complete, add a framed photo of the NY skyline!"
