Casa Quickie: Mix Curtain Patterns

In this scene from Tyler Perry's new movie I Can Do Bad All by Myself, I was struck by the great use of pattern in the curtains in this loft apartment. Not only are the two different patterns complementary, but the differing weights of the curtains also works out well. The more sheer curtains can be used for privacy during the day, while still letting sunlight filter in. At night, pull both sets of curtains for maximum privacy and comfort. Over-the-Top Decorating Ideas From But I'm a Cheerleader

My sister and I recently caught But I'm a Cheerleader on HBO the other night, and my jaw dropped at the awesome, over-the-top set design of the film. It's been years since I've seen the 1999 satirical romantic comedy, whose plot follows the "re-education" of a group of gay teenagers at a therapy camp meant to make the teens heterosexual (spoiler alert: it doesn't work). Fittingly for a movie that borrows a John Waters-esque vibe, the set design embraces a vivid, surreal look, including lots of pink, pink, pink for the girls.

Great Set Design From 2009's Emmy Nominees: Big Love

While Big Love is nowhere near as hip as Mad Men when it comes to its sets, there's no denying that the careful crafting of the show's look adds depth to the series. The Authentic Look of HBO's True Blood

Although True Blood has had an uneven first season (the finale was last night), I'll still be tuning in next year. I have to find out what happens with my favorite characters, and I can't wait to see how the plot develops. One element of the show that I really enjoy is its authentic look, which is crafted by the nimble art and set direction of Bill Law and Catherine Smith. Filmed in Los Angeles and Shreveport, LA, the show's set design embraces small-town Southern style that is imbued with a creepy dread. Source

Coveted Crib: Kate Walsh's Lovely LA Home

Kate Walsh's 1920s Spanish-style Los Angeles home is featured in this month's issue of InStyle, and I'm blown away by how glamorously laid-back it is. While elements like a Steinway grand piano, lush fur throws, and a 1960s Lucite console offer that prim Old Hollywood look you see in many celebrity homes, there is something really layered and livable about it that I found unusual. Turns out, Walsh eschewed her usual interior designer route and hired the set decorator of Private Practice, Melissa Levander, to put the space together. Come take the tour!

Love It or Hate It? Elegant Mayhem Bedding Set

This Elegant Mayhem Designer Bedding Set ($255) by Luxury Lab Linens just caught my eye, and it kind of makes me want to cover that eye with some sunglasses. The product description says it's a blend of "fierce and feminine black skull and crossbones," but I personally feel like there's too much going on in this photo.

I like turquoise, florals, chandeliers, and even skull and crossbones, but not all in one sitting. And the faux gerbera flowers, filing cabinet side tables, and guitar-as-decor in the corner? Yuck. There has got to be a better way to pull off this girly rock-and-roll look without making my eyes hurt. I challenge you to show me a bedding set that does so in the comments below. What do you think? Does anyone like this?

Casa Interview: The Good Wife's Stephen Hendrickson and Beth Kushnick

As I've mentioned in the past, I'm a huge fan of the new CBS series The Good Wife. In particular, I adore Alicia Florrick's (Julianna Margulies) apartment. With classic styling and great use of color, it's definitely a look I'm currently coveting. Luckily, I recently had the opportunity to chat with the two people responsible for the look of that very apartment. The Good Wife's production designer, Stephen Hendrickson, and set decorator, Beth Kushnick, answered my questions about the look of Alicia's home.

CasaSugar: How did the production designer and set decorator define Alicia (as a starting-over mom, lawyer, etc.), and how did this play into their concept of her new apartment?

Hendrickson and Kushnick: We defined Alicia as a working mom who wanted to make a comforting life for her kids as they had to downsize from a large house in the suburbs to a much smaller apartment which she purchased and had renovated. We kept some furniture from the old house like the kids' beds and the dining room furniture. In addition the show creators wanted to keep Alicia's king size bed as a visual - that it was too big for her new bedroom and show that one side of it was now empty. We also created a maid's room in the back of the apartment for all of her husband's belongings.

CasaSugar: How did Alicia’s style as a North Shore mom change when she moved into Chicago proper?

Hendrickson and Kushnick: Her new apartment had a sophisticated color palette . . . Alicia's apartment also has more contemporary living room furnishings and an upgraded kitchen.
