Would You Hang a Rattan Chair in Your Home?

Hanging chairs are definitely a thing of the past. In 1968 we saw the debut of Eero Aarnio's iconic Bubble Chair and in the '50s and '60s hanging rattan chairs became à la mode. And though it's 2009, I'm definitely digging this Two's Company Hanging Rattan Chair ($424). Mixed with more contemporary décor (like in this photo), I definitely think it could look relevant.

Love It or Hate It? Painter's Chair

My grandmother was a painter and also a decorator, so she was very particular about the way her studio looked. Afraid her paints might ruin her studio floors, she painted them all black and then called in her friends for a splatterpainting party, purposefully painting her floors à la Jackson Pollock. This Urban Outfitters Painter's Chair ($298) is a bit like those floors, except much less inspired. Its allover splatterpaint is really just decorative, not functional. It's also a bit of a knock-off of Marcel Breuer's Wassily Chair. What do you think?

Desire/Acquire: Midcentury Studio Stool

I love the look of the Sundance Catalog's Midcentury Studio Stool ($245). The varnished raw steel has an understated, industrial look that seems as fitting for a bistro or bar counter as a kitchen or home office. At 27 inches tall and 17 inches wide, they're also a great size - big enough but not too hefty. Unfortunately, if you want someone else to sit at your countertop with you, it'll cost you five Benjamins. Ouch. See a more affordable alternative when you read more.

Love It or Hate It? Fin Armchair

The Fin Armchair ($7,000) by Tshuka is upholstered and tufted in velvet and adorned with aqua and green feathers on a walnut frame. Meticulously made by hand, it's available in a range of colors. While I appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into an extravagant piece like this, I think it's too eccentric and frou-frou for my home. What do you think?

Before and After: A Goodwill Chair

Su Casa member Leahlarocco spotted this grungy old chair at Goodwill on sale for $7. There was nothing pretty about the upholstery or even the finish (it's basically an office chair), but she saw potential in it. She decided to paint the frame with Ralph Lauren silver metallic paint, and reupholster it with a $3 Waverly fabric and some charming blue trim. The finished product is a far cry from her Goodwill find, feminine and full of personality. Want to see it? Then read more.

Guess What This Chair Is Made of?

Artist Mario Minale created this chair (which I saw showcased at the 20th Century Modernism Show) for Droog as a reproduction of Gerrit Rietveld's famous Red and Blue Chair. To build it, he used 4,484 small plastic pieces around an aluminum frame, making it six percent larger than the original. Of the design he said, "In becoming 'more' than the original in multiple ways, the design becomes a statement on modernism, the emancipation of the individual in a postmodern society and ultimately an invitation to participate and have fun, revealing opportunities in unpretentious materials and techniques." Can you tell me what pieces Minale used to reconstruct the chair?

Alexander McQueen Debuts Limited-Edition Egg Chair

Alexander McQueen is taking his talent from the runway to your living room. The Egg Chair, which he created in 2002 as part of his store design - not to be confused with Arne Jacobsen's Egg Chair - will be produced in a limited-edition run of five chairs, available to buy this month in his London and New York boutiques. The chairs will feature his iconic houndstooth print from the AW09/10 women's collection, "The Horn of Plenty."
