Casa Quickie: Think Outside the Frame

This boho-chic 19th-century frame, which was recently featured in Skona Hem magazine, has a number of quirky features. One of my favorite quirks is this wall of small sculptures hung high on the wall in the dining room. If you're feeling uninspired by your framed photos and artwork, try adding some textural elements to your wall in the form of small sculptural objects, or even plates. It can add new zest to a ho-hum wall display.

Guess What These Pillows Are Made From?

Found It! Magazines' Favorite Bird Sculpture

Can you see the common element in both of these photos? There's a black bird sculpture hovering on the shelf in Emily Walker's Canadian crib, recently featured in Canadian House and Home. Not to be outdone, the same bird's perching on the Living Etc July 2009 cover. I've actually written about this bird before, and it was originally featured in the house of two famous designers. Do you recognize this black bird?

It's the Vitra Eames House Bird ($208). Charles and Ray Eames originally decorated the Eames House with numerous objects from their travels, and this American folk art wooden bird was apparently one of their favorites. Originally found in the Appalachian mountain region of the eastern United States, this Eames bird is based on the original sculpture, and made from alderwood with a black lacquer finish.

Stella McCartney's Brilliant Equestrian Chandelier Returns

We all know that Stella McCartney is an animal lover, but forgoing leather isn't the only way she shows it. McCartney created an astonishing crystal sculpture in the shape of a horse in 2004 for a fashion exhibit inside the Great Hall of Belsay Castle, an English Heritage castle in the UK, and it has returned for the Easter holiday. "Lucky Spot" was made from thousands of hanging crystals, and is truly a magnificent sight. McCartney was inspired to create it after visiting the medieval castle and its quarry gardens, and it is intended to be a response to George Stubbs's famous equestrian painting, Whistlejacket. If you find yourself on the other side of the pond, you can catch a glimpse of the equestrian masterpiece through Good Friday, April 10, at Belsay Castle. Would You Want These Sculptures in Your City?

I'm a big fan of public art in general, and I'm digging the childlike whimsy contained in these aluminum sculptures, entitled "Moonrise Sculptures: March, October, and December." Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, who often adapts pop culture phrases into unique art pieces, is responsible for these cartoon-like busts, which sit outside a plaza in downtown San Francisco. Would you want similar sculptures in your city or town?

Midday Muse: Art Imitating Nature

This sculpture, "Urchins," by Kelly Ann Lees, is part of the 2008 Sculpture by the Sea in Sydney, Australia. This public art festival, which is in its twelfth year, features over 100 sculptures placed along the Bondi to Bronte coastal path. I wish I had an Australia trip planned for the near future, so I could check out this artwork in person. I love public artwork: it beautifies spaces, fosters a sense of community, and encourages people to spend more time in public spaces.

Midday Muse: Surf This Wave

I recently spotted this very cool sculpture, made from old record albums, on Make magazine's website. Titled "Sound Wave," artist Jean Shin melted and manipulated records to form this wave. I love the use of recycling in this sculpture, as well as the punny title. It also makes the observer reflect on the changes in media, and ponder the fate of all of the LPs and mixtapes sitting in thrift stores, closets, and garbage dumps across the world. It's nice to see a few, at least, being put to good use.
