Casa Quickie: Plant Carrots With Radishes

One smart move I made when planting my Winter garden was to mix my radish seeds and my carrot seeds together. I used Easter egg radishes and Chanterey carrots for the garden, which are both known for their mild flavor. I also favored the Chanterey carrots because they are short, and thus suited for raised beds that might not have as much soil depth as some gardens.

But why did I mix the seeds together in the same row? What's the advantage, you ask? Well, radishes mature in only a month, which means that once you pull them, your carrots, which take at least twice as long to mature, will have more room to spread out and grow. Also, since the soil has been loosened, the carrots will have an easier time growing. Just make sure to pull out your radishes gently; you don't want to pull out your baby carrots before their time!

Midday Muse: How Does Your Garden Grow?

I don't know about your garden, but Grumpalita's garden isn't coming up silver bells and cockleshells, but it's coming up radishes. Isn't this shade of red just luscious? This photo makes me want to whip up some of YumSugar's Summer corn and radish salad.

Casa Shops: Rose and Radish

I used to live around the corner from Rose and Radish, so I'm glad the gallery/boutique/flower shop is becoming a major presence online. The physical store is a showcase for constantly revolving pieces: Every three months, Rose and Radish choses a different theme (such as "round" or "tea time") and curates a collection based on the theme.

If you're ever in San Francisco, I encourage you to stop by; the floral designs, in particular, are a must-see. But for non-locals, Rose and Radish also has an incredible online store offering selections from the gallery and oodles of other unusual goods. Nice and New: Nymphenburg Porcelain at Rose and Radish

The folks at Rose and Radish recently took a trip to Munich to visit the Royal Bavarian Porcelain Manufactory Nymphenburg, which has been one of the world's finest producers of porcelain for 250 years. In the shop's journal, they wrote, "One of the greatest parts of the Munich trip was being able to use the porcelain during the entire visit. Our favorite snack was gummi bears on the Ted Muehling Bird's Wing Dish." While the thought of them eating candy off of such a delicate dish is a nice one, it doesn't do me much good! That's why I'm delighted to see that Rose and Radish has brought the German porcelain back to the shop for us to enjoy stateside. Although the prices on this porcelain tend to run high (one coffee cup is $519), they're truly magnificent sights, and definitely what I'd consider to be works of art. Nice and New: Point à la Ligne Macaroon Pyramid Candle

Ages ago I wrote a Trend Alert on Yummy Candles, which began with a Point à la Ligne Macaroon Candle Set that was tragically out of stock at Rose and Radish. Like Sofia Coppola, I love all things macaroon: the colors, the taste, the packaging, the hard-to-come-by quality, and their fancy French origins. And, obviously it's in my nature to treasure home décor. So when a macaroon comes my way that will light up my home with girl-y scrumptiousness, how can I resist? Nice and New: Lisa Stickley Tablecloths

I just came across the Lisa Stickley Custard Cream Tablecloth ($287 and up) and Duck Plates Tablecloth ($287 and up) at Rose & Radish, and I'm completely smitten. Stickley has incorporated a trompe-l'œil effect onto her printed textiles, giving the illusion that her tablecloths are topped with traditional British tea plates. The Custard Cream Tablecloth is printed with floral china patterns with painted rims, and the Duck Plates Tablecloth is based on her own grandfather's duck-themed tea service. I love this twist on vintage British style, and think it's the perfect fit for a tea party among modern girls.

Crave Worthy: Nicolette Brunklaus Large Delight Shade

Rose and Radish put it precisely when they wrote, "Sometimes you need a lamp shade that is both understated and extremely eye-catching." The Nicolette Brunklaus Large Delight Shade ($797) is both of those things, and oh so much more. It's also evidence of the growing flocking trend, as well as playful, modern, and elegant. I'd love to see one hanging over a large, tufted leather restaurant booth or a kitchen island, or even suspended in a stark, white bathroom. It's available in black, red, or blue, but I suggest going for several of them if you can afford it! What do you think? Do you crave it as much as I do?

Nice and New: JM2 Matriochka Blackboard

As further evidence of the omnipresence of nonsouvenir matryoshka dolls, the jm2 Matriochka Blackboard ($113) has come all the way from Lyon, France to the shelves of Rose and Radish here in San Francisco. Much like the DIY Nesting Doll I wrote about, this blackboard inspires creativity. Although it'd be funny to read Bart Simpson's infamous blackboard comments here, I'd much rather see how one could interpret the traditional doll with some colored chalk, perhaps draw some embroidery, and arms with bling bangles sticking out from under her cape. Are you a fan?

Room Therapy: I Need to Find a Birdcage!

CocoAngel recently posted in the CasaSugar group with a decorating quandary, and I thought that you might be able to help her out. She writes, "I'm just finishing up redecorating my daughter's room and having trouble finding accessories, specifically a bird cage. She changed her bed spread to this birds and bird cages design (see left), so a black-wire bird cage would be a fantastic item to add to the room. Anyone seen bird cages in the major chains or online somewhere?"

My favorite bird cage finds are from Rose and Radish. This cute boutique offers bird cages in white, turquoise, blue, and red so your daughter would have a variety of colors to choose from. While they aren't black, they do complement the colors in the bedding quite well. I'm especially partial to this Wetter Indochine Pagoda Birdcage ($51). If you're not sold on these, you can also find some gold-colored antique metal bird cages ($11.99), which are often used for wedding favors. These could be spray painted with black paint, though given the amount of spindled metal on the cage, it might be a bit of a task!

Anyone else have suggestions for CocoAngel?
