On a recent flea marketing trip, I found the most intriguing planter that blew my mind. An artist repurposes worn but readily available items into these eco-friendly scalloped flower pots. Can you guess the main material of this delightful design?

Cool Idea: Pram as a Planter

I love the look of this vintage planter, used in the home of a Brooklyn couple. Of course, the effect wouldn't be the same if the pram itself wasn't such a great design, but luckily, it's not too hard to find a vintage pram if you're on the hunt for one.
Look for a vintage pram like this one on eBay, or if you're really lucky, find one in your grandmother's attic. Line the pram with heavy duty plastic before adding soil, to maintain the integrity of the pram itself. I'd choose low-water plants such as succulents or cacti for this planter, so you don't have to overload the pram with water. Cover with a layer of pebbles or volcanic rock to keep things tidy.

Cool Idea: Turn That Frond Upside Down

I fell in love with the topsy-turvy tomato planters when I first found them a year or two ago, but I'm so excited to see the concept taken to a sleeker level.

Ranging in price from $25 to $75, the Boskke Sky Planters are made in New Zealand from black or white ceramic. They're modern, beautiful, and completely unexpected.

Created by designer Patrick Morris, the stoneware ceramic planters can conserve up to 80 percent of the water normally used to water houseplants, thanks to the self-watering system, which only needs to be replenished twice a month at most. These planters are also a great choice for studio apartments, as they free up valuable floor space.

Cool Idea: Stool as Plant Stand

The folks at Sunset Magazine never cease to impress me with their crafty chic makeovers. Believe it or not, this sunny yellow plant stand used to be a metal stool that had seen better days. Sunset staffers removed the seat and sanded and spray-painted the frame. Then, they simply placed a planter inside the seat frame. The project only requires two hours of DIY time, a can of paint, and the planter! The bright-yellow paint choice makes it look fresh and modern rather than too shabby chic. I love it!

Love It or Hate It? Swan Planter

Are swans going to replace peacocks as 2009's top fowl? Anthropologie's certainly putting them to good use in the garden. The Anthropologie Swan Planter ($78 for large) reminds me of my grandmother's ceramic planters. Is it too old-fashioned for you, or do you appreciate its throwback elegance?

I once showed you how to make a self-watering planter from a recycled soda bottle, and while the DIY was pretty easy and inventive, I will admit it wasn't the most handsome pot I've ever seen. I'm not someone who thinks we should need to make sacrifices when it comes to good design, so I kept my eyes peeled and was silently hoping for a sexier alternative. Then came the Vitamin I.V. Self-Watering Planter ($375), an ingenious pot that comes with a refillable I.V. bag that regulates the flow of water to your plant with its drip feed. The lightweight fiberglass pot has a sleek, modern conical shape that's a far cry from the do-it-yourself look of that surgeried soda bottle. Unfortunately, I.V. is quite large (as is its price) at 12.5 x 21.25 inches, and is really meant to hold a tree, so now I'm not-so-silently hoping Vitamin will release a mini version for more petite plants.

I talk often about various forms of recycling and upcycling, and I've seen plenty of ingenious ideas for reusing what might seem useless. But sometimes you needn't change a thing about a household item to give it a new purpose. Sometimes all it takes is a little dirt. That's surely the case with these old drawers that were effortlessly transformed into planters with some soil and seeds. If you want to try this on your own, though, I'd recommend drilling holes in the drawer bases for drainage. And to think: I spent all that time building my own garden box! Ohh, hindsight.
