Casa Craving Recap: Pink Ribbon

Yesterday marked the start of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. So pink (as in pink ribbon) was the inspiration for this week's Casa Craving Challenge, and I asked you guys to design a stylish kitchen around this light pink color, and this SMEG '50 Style Refrigerator.

It wasn't an easy choice but the best rooms opted for a retro, '50s design, or just mid-century accents, which resonated harmoniously with the SMEG refrigerator. Here are my three favorite pink SMEG looks:

Look #1 was designed by paperfairies, who went 100% retro with a '50s diner style table and banquette seating, for a look she calls "Euro modern with diner chic." She chose a silver, black and pink palette to coordinate with the SMEG refrigerator, but didn't go super pink. You can tell that paperfairies really visualized her kitchen, choosing all the details, everywhere from the sleek, white kitchen cabinets down to a kitschy, pink flamingo oven mitt and towel set.

Look #2 was designed by klynnmorton, who gave the SMEG refrigerator all the attention by choosing "a mix of modern stainless steel appliances, a diner style table, and some great patterned chairs." Her kitchen, which she says "cannot get more retro modern than this," is classy, understated, and a place that would be relaxing to walk into. I liked her quirky accents like the bentwood chairs, which picked up the color of the fridge, and the kit kat clock, which both showed character but weren't over-the-top retro.

Look #3 was designed by tdamji who chose a mix of orange and pink for her color palette, along with a lot of stainless steel, and light wood furniture. She showed off her girly side with floral melamine plates, hand-pressed coasters, a cupcake kitchen timer, and adorable petits fours tea lights.

Casa Craving Challenge: Pink Ribbon

Every Thursday on CasaSugar, I'll give you a decorating challenge and ask you to go Casa Craving for items that fit the look. (Here's a post explaining what a Casa Craving is and how to create one.)

The latest Casa Craving Challenge is inspired by the emblem of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the pink ribbon.

So in this Casa Craving Challenge, I’d like you to design a stylish kitchen around this light pink color. You can go totally pretty-in-pink or use other colors, with calculated punches of pink. To start you off, I’ve chosen this pink SMEG '50 Style Refrigerator ($1,999) to incorporate into each of your kitchens. What furniture, artwork, appliances, tableware, silverware, and other accents would you use to get the look?

Rethinking Pink: Planet Dog Pink Ribbon Toys

To highlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we're bringing you some household items that benefit different breast cancer research and awareness charities in our Rethinking Pink posts. And since I know there are a lot of pet lovers out there, I thought I'd bring you some fun pet toys today.

The Planet Dog Pink Ribbon Ringo Toy ($9.99) is a tough dog toy that will stand up to Fido's tough love chewing. Since my dog only fetches in water, so I'll be using one of these along the shore. For a fuzzier and squeakier toy, try the Pink Ribbon Buddy ($15.99). For each toy sold, at least $0.75 will be donated to the Komen Foundation with a minimum guaranteed donation of $10,000.

On Planet Dog's website, they write that "All of us at Planet Dog want to help find a cure for breast cancer. To do that, we developed two great Pink Ribbon Toys-the Pink Ribbon Ringo and the Pink Ribbon Buddy. These special toys were designed with the signature pink ribbon in mind. The red of our Pink Ribbon Toys signifies heart. The pink 'ribbon' signifies not only breast cancer awareness, but hope, determination and support."

Rethinking Pink: Pink Ribbon Soaps

Pink isn't necessarily always my decorating go-to color, but since it is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I'm all for it. I'm tickled pink even more so if the sale of the products benefits breast cancer research. So, when I spotted these beautiful Pink Ribbon Soaps from Gianna Rose Atelier, I knew I had to share.

The four French-milled soaps are scented with fresh-linen (yum), embossed with a pink ribbon, and come nestled in a beautiful gift box. I love the gift box on its own; I'd use it as a pencil case after the suds are gone. More importantly, 15% of the proceeds from the sale of these soaps will be donated by Gianna Rose Atelier to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation.

Nice and New: Breast Cancer Awareness Décor Products

Every October, retailers around the world sell products designed to raise money and awareness for breast cancer charities. Décor products certainly fall into this category, too. The problem is that while seeing a plethora of pink ribbon-branded items in retailers left and right may catch your eye, most products don't necessarily inspire you to decorate your homes with these items year-round. So I was excited to see some chic pink products that I'd certainly purchase regardless of the campaign.

First, Williams-Sonoma Home will donate $10 from the purchase of every Pink Solid Cashmere Throw ($298) this month to support breast cancer research and patient treatment. You can choose between a light or hot pink 50-by-65-inch fringed throw.

Steal of the Day: Grosgrain-Ribbon Roman Shade

If only PBteen offered more colors than pink, purple, and blue, it would be my favorite resource for steals! This Grosgrain-Ribbon Roman Shade ($14-$16, reduced from $79-$89) is classic, chic, and absurdly cheap. It's a sheer organdy shade, so it doesn't block out all of the light, but we're not mole people, so that's fine! It has a wooden handle that pulls the panel up, which is certainly a step up from your average plastic mini blinds! I'm not so keen on this pink, but it would be fairly simple to iron a different grosgrain ribbon on top of this teeny-bop color. What do you think?

DIY: Oilcoth Placemats

Since the grass is green, the weather warm, and I recently broke out my bikini, Spring picnics in the park are constantly on my mind these days. PartySugar has me covered with a delicious Spring picnic menu to fill my belly between rounds of Frisbee and catch, and I came across a wonderful DIY for cheerful placemats to go along with her all-American apple pie bar and fried chicken recipes. The no-sew DIY is just too cute to resist, and easy as apple pie bars, so I had to share.

Supplies:

Oilcloth (15-x-12 inches per placemat)
Grosgrain ribbon (18 inches per placemat)
Scissors
Craft knife
Pinking shears

Here's how, from Make Grow Gather:

Cut the oil cloth to 15-x-12-inch rectangles (or whatever size you'd like).
Cut the grosgrain to 18-inch lengths per rectangle.
Trim the edges of the placemats with the pinking shears.
Halfway down either the left or right edge of each placemat, make a small incision with the craft knife (about the width of your ribbon).
Thread the ribbon through the incision that you just made.
With the placemat pattern side down, lay down your napkin and silverware (or plasticware) on top of it, and roll them up.
Then, wrap the ribbon around the roll a few times and tie a bow. Toss them in a your picnic basket and you're good to go!

How-To: Make Homemade Gift Tags

One great way to personalize a gift during the holiday season is by creating unique gift cards. I recently found a cute, easy tutorial for doing just that. You start out with a simple shipping tag, like the one seen above.

What You'll Need

shipping tags
small fabric scraps
glue or thread and needle
twine, yarn, or ribbon
letter stamps, or calligraphy markers or other nice pens

Here's how to do it, from Zakka Life:

Cut a small piece of fabric with pinking shears. Hand sew fabric onto tag, or glue the edge closest to the small end of the tag.
Hand stamp a name, or write the name or message under the fabric on the tag.
Attach a ribbon, twine, or piece of yarn to tag, and attach it to gift.
Give gift!

How-To: Make Your Bedroom Glamorous

I enjoy the imperfections in my life, and I don't have any illusions of grandeur. But sometimes I feel like I should be entitled to a little glamour in my life, even if I'm not making appearances at red carpet events. Amy Adams's character, Delysia, in Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day has it right: a knock-out Art Deco apartment with the style, fashion, and flair of the days of the greats like Carole Lombard and Clark Gable. To fully execute this look in my home would require a major overhaul, and ditching some of my favorite mid-century modern pieces. But, I can still have a little slice of glitz by completing a glamourous bedroom makeover, and House to Home knows exactly how to do so.
